Interesting interview and good that you guys are doing this periodically. Policies tend to change and the processes are definitely different in every country and region. I'm glad in a way I didn't have to get a NIF and open a bank account for my application. Their visa application seemed pretty straightforward. That's nice to know TAP Portugal has generous baggage allowance. That's a leap of faith coming to Portugal without visiting the country. Great share guys!
I've said it before but Kalie is really good at this. She asks the right questions and gets the best details. I have read about this process so many times, but this laid out the timeline so well. The lease requirement is the most daunting task IMO; would love a more detailed dive on how to fulfill this requirement! Thanks for what you are doing!

Can you PLEASE interview a family with primary school aged children!? We're an American family of 4, looking to move, and school is our TOP consideration! Cost Process Enrollment Etc.
Or you start thinking about moving to Portugal after being raised in America . You start thinking about retiring in Portugal and listening to people trying to get Visas and it hits you that you're still a Portuguese citizen because you were born in Terceira and you start doing the happy dance.lol

@@maikmuller7074 Yes this is true. We Portuguese learn English from an early age at school. English movies are not translated, they simply have subtitles, with the exception of children's movies. On the other hand, the Portuguese language is very difficult for foreigners, it will not be easy in the coming years.

In the fall of 2020, many were getting the visas with little to no funding, then they made a change in March of 2021 (lucky me) so had to fund it, it felt risky, but worked out in the end. please help us, who are trying to understand: what is a nif?? or a niff? as please, this is an issue on this wonderful channel re: non-english words, acronyms, food names, etc. please consider that with EVERY VIDEO, you have brand new viewers and/or brand new subscribers. like for instance, a few days ago, had to guess at a spelling, *in Portuguese.* to look up a word you used in another video..which took up quite a bit of a time investment. but if a video is supposed to explain a topic, acronyms and new words don't help when they appear with no explanation..otherwise, love the channel!👍

Our D7 was approved in May and we’ll be arriving in July, God-willing. Did you have to do a covid test or quarantine on arrival? My sister and her kids will be coming on vacation with us (all of us flying in from Canada); will they need covid tests etc? Thank you all for the video and best wishes!

Only young people could do this right. LOL. I love Portugal but have a dream of living there but I could not ever pick up and leave. Also health insurance etc.
I’m glad you are enjoying Portugal. It is sad however that so many people that move here can’t find any other way of making a living other than telling other people to move here. This attracts people who don’t assimilate or invest in the country but mostly are just looking for a cheap place to live and are, ironically, driving up the cost of living for everyone. Almost everyone in my family, and most of the country, works for minimum wage and since the foreign invasion it is very hard to survive. Housing, restaurants, etc. have become almost unaffordable for the average person. I wish you could just come and participate without advertising. You will eventually ruin what you came here for in the first place and then leave for another “cheap” country while we Portuguese are here left behind. Nós não precisamos mais Turismo de pé descalço.
It seems like whole industry with some influencers/advertisers, lawyers and real estate agents involved, with many overpaying foreigners who eventually will move back after few years leaving an inflated market behind. I would not also see this to change anytime soon, alone the fact how most of such westerners describes themselves falsely as "expats", despite them moving permanently to a new place, just in order to avoid the word "immigrant" is very telling. Assimilation is only for "immigrants".

This is awesome! It makes me more and more excited for our eventual move to Portugal. We are looking to do a scouting trip next year in 2022, and are still 3 1/2 years out from potentially moving there.
@@twitchlazy The election doesn’t matter so much for us as much as me retiring early and 2024 just happens to be the year we chose. Our last child graduates from high school next year. I work remotely now, so who knows, we may decide to move our expat move date up.
Great vid, so much interest in Portugal from Canadians and Americans looking to escape crazy cost of living and crazy politics. Covid has changed many things incl what countries are viable and accessible. Much of SE Asia and Australia NZ are now closed so focus for me is shifted to places like Portugal.

Has anyone moved from the East Coast NY/NJ/CT area? have to wait until July to return for a full 90 days..my girlfriend is an EU citizen living in Portugal for over 2 years from Sweden... I just got on Medicare and have been medically disabled for 2 years now.. Just starting the process to return and start our life in Ferragudo where we rented a guest house and she is living waiting for my return. Any insight from the same area and where to file and who to meet with on this end to help would be appreciated... feeling enough pressure just packing up my house to go in to storage. Obrigado!
Another great vid… it brought up a question. If I get a NIF here in the states, can I open up a Portuguese bank account in person while I’m visiting so that it’s set up before I start the D7 visa process? Will they let you do it ahead like that?
Yes, if you have a NIF, you can open a bank account. Depending on the bank, you might want to have a couple hundred Euros to make a counter deposit when you do your paperwork and then you're done. It just take a little time. - Josh & Kalie
We're in the middle of our move from Orillia in Canada to Obidos in Portugal (the Caldas da Rainha region). We sold the family home, bought a loft in Montreal (in case the kids need a landing pad and my husband and I love Old Montreal) and bought a Vacation Villa in Portugal. We close July 14th and once we have the villa...I will send over our cat to join the pack. The whole process with four pets will take about 90 days in total. That includes finding, buying, closing a villa plus banking, purchasing a car, and insurance and thank God we hired a law firm to help with all the hoops and paperwork. It's a big emotional mountain to deal with that requires a leap of faith. Right now we have to wait until we close to take our next big step. So getting there. Great videos by the way. Look forward to seeing Portugal through your perspective :).

Good interview. I tried to post a reply earlier but for some reason it didn't post. Bordr is not accepting NIF and Bank applications anymore (well not right now). I'm now trying to find alternatives. Going to try nifonline pt to get the NIF but now have to find another way of opening a Bank remotely. May try Banco Best as mentioned here. Any other recommendations?
Thanks! Atlantico.eu is the only other bank we've heard of that does a remote opening, but they're not highly recommended as a bank for a long term solution. Once you get here, open an account with a bigger bank and close yours down with Atlantico. - Josh & Kalie

I did a search for them in the Americans and FriendsPT group and a lot of people unfortunately had terrible experiences with them and either gave up or took weeks to months to get their accounts setup. I'm now asking around and if I find something else that I feel more confident in I'll report back. There are people in that same contact group that will hand out Millennium BCP account manager info but they often ask for a fee up front to do so. So I'm still going to search around.

Unfortunately, it’s amazing how much stuff we’ve accumulated over a lifetime and getting it all sorted and disposed of is slower than we anticipated. Y’all are in Lisbon? We took several trips to Portugal before we settled on Porto as a future home. Being from Texas you might get it but to us, Lisbon had a Dallas vibe and Porto had an Austin vibe.

Hey you two! Might see you in the early fall! Considering checking out Mexico as well! Just curious..I’m self employed and get paid by clients mostly through venmo and pay pal. It goes directly into my bank. How would that work as far as showing them proof I get regular income?
You should be able to make that work, but not sure the best way to go about it. Really depends on your specific situation. But I know freelancers who were able to get visas.
It shouldn't be an issue assuming that you're making a decent. reliable monthly amount because it seems like they're getting more and more used to remote/digital workers and freelancers. - Josh & Kalie
I also get paid primarily through venmo, PayPal, square and cash app. I then deposit it all into my business bank account. From that I pay myself a salary every two weeks that gets deposited into my wife and my joint checking account. I’m figuring that should show the paper trail pretty clearly.

My husband is a Disabled Army Veteran medically retired for 13yrs. We have 5 children, three are serving our Armed Forces - Air Force, Army and Navy. The two youngest are 16 and 11yrs old. Tomorrow we start the process of getting our Passports. We are a bit confused with the proof of financial ability to support yourself through your stay. My husband receives V.A and Social Security Disability - do we have to have a certain amount in our bank account before we start the Visa process? Hi Tony, we have a video for that on our channel. There's a tax treaty between the two countries so there isn't double taxation, but we won't say that there's none of any form. Each person's situation is different, which is why you might want to hirer a specialist to keep your tax obligations as low as legally possible. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Don't want to be chiming in all over the place lol but I used (and it was recommended by many) AirBnb to secure the booking for 6 months. There is even a "visa receipt" letter that can be printed after you have confirmed the reservation which is accepted when you submit your visa application documents.

The inflation in Portugal is low compared to other western countries. But the big problem is the cost of buying or rent a house (real estate is grow like mad in last 5 years), because lots of Brits and Brazilian want to retire in Portugal, with lots and lots of digital nomad coming to Portugal this year the market is completely insane. Portugal have one increasing of 36% in real estate this past year alone. And is a good investment if you have the money to invest right now. My house worth 150k in Odivelas in 2011, right now the value is 300k, with a increase almost of 25% this year.

Hello! Why would you ever need a health insurance in Portugal? We have free and universal healthcare and our healthcare system is ranked as the 12th best in the world. Of course you can have a health insurance if you really want to and it will cost you just a small fraction of you pay in the US... but why?!
