You have missed the point. Only fools wasn't loved for those moments, although they were funny. It was because they were a family that struggled to make ends meat. We followed them through decades. Through death, miscarriages, marriage break ups, pain and joy. They were the british underdog that kept on fighting, losing mostly. Narrowing it down to a compilation of slapstick moments really misses everything that made it great.

A lot of the laughs in this show are based around knowing the characters and the context in which the events are happening, so these clips aren't a fair representation, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Indeed. It does show a misunderstanding of some of the subtleties of British humour, to try and watch the "best bits" however, clever writing and delivery still make for some funny scenes, as this clip shows. Interesting to see how much they picked up from the first scene, with barely a word spoken onscreen.
@aureliaansah1462

Agree with both comments. And unless I'm mistaken the studio laughter isn't "canned laughter", but a real audience recording.

That's right Ben. The whole humour of Del Boy, is built around his unrealistic sense of optimism, and his own abilities and confidence to achieve greatness. When in fact, he is totally naff, and most of his 'deals' prove to be failures. It's this ludicrous over confidence that we find funny, but he would never understand.

A lot of those clips need to be watched from the beginning. It will explain why they are dressed as batman and robin. The auction scene has a massive impact when you have been watching them for many episodes and knowing how they struggled just to get by, then when they get that it even brings tears to the eyes. After years and years having that item worth all that money sitting in their garage/Del's stock.

@CanthusOfCandE

Gareth Lloyd whilst I agree familiarity with it helps I think watching every episode is overkill for 3 clips, the batman scene really needs context so at least watch that episode. The other hand 2 clips work stand alone but that scene is so abstract without context. Woman gets mugged, saved by 2 middle-aged men out for a run in batman costumes. Without the knowledge they are off to a fancy dress party, their car broke down and they are late it makes little sense. The first scene is working class men finding their mistaken egg timer is worth a fortune and the third being 2 guys out on the pull both work fine in isolation as they are both explained within the scene. That being said if they find it funny, obviously watch it as it is a well loved show. Personally. Didn't find it funny episode to episode to watch but they do have some stand out moments.

The Batman and Robin scene happens when they are on their way to a fancy dress party but their car breaks down so they start running. It gets even funnier, when they arrive no one tells them that the host of the party has died and the party is now a funeral wake. To which they come screaming in shouting “Nah,Nah,Nah,Nah,Nah,Nah,BATMAN” 🤣😂😆so funny. Del & Rodney are a British Institution,they to us are like a part of the family,no matter where you come from in Great Britain everyone loves them,as we all seem to know or have a Del Boy & Rodney in our own family. Those loveable rogues who never quite make it,who lose a pound and find a penny. But keep smiling because as Del would say “This time next year,we’ll be millionaires”. ❤️😘
@luvstellauk
@luvstellauk 6 лет назад
The way the Batman scene was shown in this video didn't do it justice because it only becomes funny in the context of what happens before and after that excerpt, you also need to know the back story of how the councillor fits into the story.

The premise of Only Fools is that there are 2 brothers who live in a council flat and have a market stall. One is a shady character always looking for dodgy stuff off the back of a truck, the other is trying to lead a more normal life, get educated and leave his brother (after a few years anyway). They always have big ideas to make it big, and it always backfires and they are stuck in the council flat waiting for the next big idea. This was the episode (after 20 odd years) where they finally do make it big.

This programme is so beloved for so many reasons. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and I knew places and people like this. It is so uniquely British and working class but somehow it transcends all that too. We love those characters because they're real, so well written, that anyone can relate to them. But they're also a reminder of a time and a Britishness I think we've lost which also makes me sad.

The slow build up to the main joke is what Only fools and horses was all about. You really need to watch the whole episode to fully get and appreciate the jokes. for example, the batman and robin scene doesn't make sense to you because you have no idea why they were in their costumes and had to run through the streets of London in the middle of the night....context.

To give this classic series a fair chance, it should really be watched from the very beginning and throughout all seasons. It's a true masterpiece portraying a couple of brothers with well put-together character traits: Del-Boy - the striving underdog with a golden heart, his sullen and brooding younger brother Rodney who never really manages to leave his older brother's side, their granddad (and later their uncle) and their constant band of friends and acquaintances. Despite being a comedy, many episodes deal with serious issues. But as they are so cleverly written, the stories never becomes cheesy or cross the line of decency.
@roberthaynes8830
@roberthaynes8830 Год назад
Exactly. It's not something you can get a very good idea of from just watching clips. There are so many ups and downs with the characters over the years. Only Fools is a show that can have me crying with laughter one moment, then crying with sadness the next. There's hardly any slapstick style humour in the show really. And take the lovely chandelier episode - the set-up is what makes it so funny. To take the scene when it happens isn't as funny when taken in context of the episode.

What makes Only Fools & Horses so great is they can go from straight up slapstick comedy to real poignancy, the scene where Del & Rodney are stuck in a lift and Rodney breaks down after losing his first unborn child is a real tearjerker and so well acted. You need to watch that scene and then the one where Rodders go out with "Nervous Nerys" and Del has convinced him to go for the tough guy leathers and shades look is hilarious.

One of the best comedies from UK. What made it special was the clever writing so that almost every character had depth. It wasn't just about Del Boy and Rodney who were main stars. Characters like Grandad, Uncle Albert, Boycie and Marlene and Trigger were so well done. The show had its fair share of catchphrases. Whether it was uncle Albert saying 'during the war', Del Boy 'you know it makes sense' or Trigger constantly calling Rodney 'Dave'. You really need to watch a whole series to understand the characters and fall in love with them.

That first clip you watched is difficult to really get if you don't understand the characters and their history. The thing about this show I should explain if you've never really watched it is that although this show provided some of the funniest moments in sitcom history it also provided some of the most hard hitting and tear jerking moments in the history of British TV as well. You really should try and watch more of this show if you get the chance.

There are much more to just these scenes. One must sometimes watch the complete episode to appreciate it. Falling through the barcounter also, is just part of episode. Watching Trigger, his facial expressions etc is what makes it funny. There are many nuances that only British (and a lot of South Africans like me) understand to enjoy these scenes. And to compare it to Dumb and Dumber is a slap in the face of these brilliant actors and writers. Slapstick? By a long shot NO!

Another good series to watch is Allo Allo about french resistance the German occupiers and two hapless RAF pilots who were shot down and trying to get back to Britain. Everyone speaks English but with accents and make out they can't understand what the others are saying. One of the best characters is a British undercover spy posing as a French policeman but his French is very poor so he says crazy things like good moaning. Well worth a watch

That kid is so chill. There are many references in Only Fools and Horses, which fall in between the crevices of 90's humour and the understated British personality, that don't always lend themselves to transatlantic humour. The premise of the show is simple, two best mate who are trying to get rich and are constantly making blunders.

The Batman and Robin scene requires context to be truly appreciated. Without knowing why they’re dressed like that, where they’re going and why they’re running it not as funny. But the others are just pure universal slapstick

Hello Felipe and Lillian, just to let you know, most comedies in the UK are shown to a live audience and the laughter recorded then.. It's not the 'canned laughter' some people think it is, real live audience and proper on the spot laughing, giggling, oohs, ahhs and everything in-between.. I'm glad you like 'Only Fools and Horses' it is a National Treasure, Del Boy's famous phrase is " ... This time next year Rodney, we'll be millionaires. .." Del Boy falling through the bar is hilarious and type in 'The Chandelier' too, have a look on RU-vid and see if you agree.. Best wishes and regards, from Wales .. :D

Although MASH was set in Korea - it was really about Vietnam - which was still in progress during the first three years of the series. People in the 1950s did not look on the Korean War as being a pointless war. People in the 60s and 70s certainly DID think that Vietnam was pointless. And MASH was reflecting that attitude.
@EricIrl
@EricIrl 6 лет назад
Although based on a novel by a doctor who had served in Korea, the TV series veered towards making comments that chimed with those who were disillusioned with America's involvement in Vietnam. The one word that describes the writing is "cynicism" as the main protagonists realise that the purpose of the war is pointless and so they concentrate on just saving as many lives as they can - whilst taking sideswipes at their commanders and politicians. I don't think a TV series like MASH could be made today set (say) in Afghanistan.

The batman and Robin outfits were for a fancy dress party but because their car (a reliant robin) broke down, they ran to the party and happened to be passing by the lady being mugged. If you can, watch the whole episode.
@keithclark6299

The auction was for a watch that the elder brother had passed off as a worthless relic many years before. Only Fools and Horses was about how 2 brothers had struggled and sold dodgy (stolen) gear, made bad financial decisions, through the years. So the auction was to be the brothers moving on into actually having money. It was the pathos that was the humour in that sketch

To fully appreciate the Batman and Robin joke, you need to see the full scene. They’re dressed up because they’re off to a fancy dress party, but their car (the three wheeler Reliant Robin) breaks down on the high street, so they run through the back lanes to avoid being ridiculed by pedestrians in the street. It’s genius...and hilarious!

The older actor is called David Jason and he is not only a comic actor But he plays serious drama roles in a police series called A Touch Of Frost ( You’ve probably seen it on ITV3]. Whichever character (There are a lot of them) he plays he becomes that character. For Example in Only Fools And Horses he IS Delboy. In A Touch O Frost he IS Jack Frost. He isn’t David Jason or that actor who was in Only Fools And Horses. Look out for him in two other sitcoms: Porridge (set in a prison) he’s only in a few of the episodes. He is also found in Open All Hours. The main character in Porridge and Open All Hours Is Ronnie Barker and he has many comedy roles. He too has the ability to BE the character. look out for The Two Ronnies starring Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. It is a sketch show that ran for many years. There are hundreds of characters that they BECOME not just act as.

Try The Two Ronnies or open all hours. One foot in the grave, Fawlty Towers & Blackadder. These are all British comedy at its best.

the 'batman and robin' scene ... they were on their way to a fancy dress party and their vehicle had broken down, so they had to run to their destination . . . it was filmed in great secrecy at around 3 o'clock in the morning, so that no-one would know about the episode until it was screened on the television. .. it is nice to see you enjoying our best classic comedies.

I'd say that British comedy programmes don't have a total absence of "big" slapstick humour, but it tends to be in shorter supply, and framed by a deeper narrative. The slapstick tends to inform the humour, rather than simply BEING the humour.

The actress that played Councillor Murray, used to live in my town. When she didn't have an acting job, she used to be a barmaid in my local pub. She said to me once that being in a successful TV sitcom or drama was never a guarantee that you would get regular work. The acting profession is probably one of the most fickle industries there is.

The reason why they were dressed like Batman and Robin is because they were going to a fancy dress party - although it turned out they got it wrong as it was a funeral party. By the way, no canned laughter was ever used for any episodes as it was a live audience even for the outside filming (which they then watched on a screen).

This comedy ran from about 1980 until early 90s. It was the UK's favourite comedy and the whole point was that they struggled for money. The characters were so loved that viewers literally wept when Del and Rodney became rich. That clip doesn't make sense unless you've seen about 15 years worth of episodes.

The back story is that The Trotters struggled for years making ends meet, paying bills etc. Always trying to make shady deals to make some money. This is one of the final episodes where they stumble across this watch which finally makes them millionaires when sold at auction. Derek always said to Rodney " this time next year Rodders, we'll be millionaires" and it never happened. Until this episode (1st part of the video)

Just to give you a bit of context/facts on those 3 scenes. The first scene, that scene has built up for years, the two brothers have been trying hard to make a success and failing for year, to finally see something go their way was very satisfying for the audience who have gone on this roller coaster for over a decade. The second scene, you need to watch the full episode to understand why they are dressed as batman and robin, one thing you didn't notice is that the height of each character had been reversed, batman is normally the taller of the two but since Del is the oldest, he chooses to be batman. Interesting fact about the last scene, Trigger(the taller actor) wasn't meant to be in that scene. He was in the same studio when they was filming it and was asked to film a scene with them as he's a series regular on the show. His part in the scene was quickly improvised to fit in and as you can see it's his cluelessness that makes that scene work.
