THIS level of fluid agility in modal voice is seldom seen in Western singing, even among the best lyric-coloratura sopranos. Perhaps the only three female Western singers with this level of fluid agility are Ingeborg Hallstein, Caterina Valente and Maureen McGovern. Indian classical singing is almost unparalleled.

@@ShivamSingh-qz3kh I sense a hint of supremacy in that comment. You do realize Western Europeans have a thousand years of great and world-changing composers as representatives of their classical music, right? Music that has lasted centuries(because Westerners actually learnt to write music down), been adored across the world, and regularly hailed as the pinnacle of human musical genius. From your comment you'd think Westernern music barely progressed beyond beating an animal skin drum whilst dancing around a fire.

@@ShivamSingh-qz3kh Yet Western classical music achieved far more and advanced in less than half the time. Meanwhile, Indian classical music stayed pretty much the same. Extraordinary to me, normal to you. Indian classical music, whilst very pretty and sensuous, is basically just ceremonial music with a fancy title. The same old slow and atmospheric first section, followed by the same old faster second section. A-B format. Every. Time. The same cookie-cutter ragas, the same cookie-cutter talas, and the same old aimless and ludicrously drawn out and ostentatious improvisations. By my measure, that doesn't make it 'classical music', it makes it a, 'jamming session', like what teenagers do at school.

Kaushiki ji is one of India's finest classical musicians. Such performances are not rehearsed to a script. These are sung impromptu on stage. Let me explain. This piece is based on Raga Bhimpalasi. A raga is a combination of musical notes and is sung in one scale for any given composition (some compositions may have scale changes). Similarly, the rhythm is also set for either the entire piece, like in this case it is 16 beats. It can also vary with portions of the composition. This is not a lyrical. It is note based. In Indian Classical music we have ascending and descending 7 musical notes just like Do Re Me...These are - Sa re ga ma pa dha ni (ascending, C D E F G A B C) and sa ni dha pa ma ga re (descending). Raag Bhimpalasi is a pentatonic raga which goes like - :ni sa ga ma pa: ni sa (asc 5) and :sa ni dha pa ma ga re: sa (des 7). When Kaushiki ji sings, she sings keeping in mind two things, the notes for ascension and descent are aligned to the above structure of the raga in all possible combinations (there are more technicalities, perhaps beyond the scope of this platform) and they get set into the beat pattern (You'll see the tempo increases or decreases based on the number of notes she sings per beat cycle). The same notes are sung in the above combination, mostly across 3 octaves of the selected scale. Such performances can go on for hours and usually last for the entire night at times. The singers do not think and sing. They have practiced to a level that their throat (vocal chords, larynx, diaphragm, lungs etc.) develops a motor memory and can intelligently churn out the right notes and form a melody like a musical instrument. This is the essence of vocal (or instrumental) training in Indian classical music. Each and every sound the performer makes is an independent musical note!

Guys, you have barely listened to Indian music. This is raag Bhimpalasi, and there are 299 more !

I just landed here casually. Kaushiki is simply out of this world no doubt about that but I was also enjoyed watching Rick get overwhelmed by the dexterity of her voice. Understanding raag Bhimpalas would help further understand what was going on and enjoy and appreciate it at another level.

Welcome to Hindustani classical music. Classical music started from ages.classical music originates from language Sanskrit which is the base of every Indian language. It is a sea in itself. She sang beautifully. There are thousands of such singers in India .

Indian classical music is a whole different planet to explore, guys! And that's one art form where all the players are equally appreciated, so you'll see people loving the singers, but you'll also see equal appreciation for all of the instrumentalists, in fact, you'll see a lot of purely instrumental concerts as well. Check out any of the musicians that play at the Sawai Gandharva Festival, it happens every year in Pune.
