@bhanumatirao4223
@bhanumatirao4223 5 лет назад
It is actually called a Taanam, part of the Raagam Taanam. Pallavi concept which is the highlight of a karnatik music concert. Taanam is improvisation of the Raaga , which in this case is Shanmukhapriya. It lays stress on rendering the notes if the Raaga with a rhythm. Though there is a basic pattern to it much is extempore and very creative with spontaneous interactions between the artists. A Raaga is a combination of notes of the octave which is pleasant to the ear and also evokes and depicts emotions or bhaava. The major scale in western music is called Shankarabharana. Much of oriental music is in a Raaga we call Mohan which has 6 notes . It lacks Fa (MA in India) AMD tee ( Ni for us).It is a happy sounding Raaga and Mohana means beautiful or pleasant. The long instrument is called the tamboora or tamboori in the south. The south Indian tamboora has a hollow base of wood and 4 strings tuned in this order Fa So So (both high end of major scale ) and last lower So It is tuned the the scale that the singer sings in. For example G or G sharp, and all the instruments including the mridangam are tuned to the same pitch. We have 2 systems of classical music in India, both based on the Raaga system, but are different styles ..about 4000 years old!
@bhanumatirao4223
@bhanumatirao4223 5 лет назад
Also the Toccata and fugue in D minor by Bach a minor scale is somewhat akin to the Raaga Keeravani.. Literal meaning, voice of a bird..parrot

This is not a Veena. The string one by the lady in Purple saree is violin. The lady with the tall instrument- it's called Tanpura or Tamburi which is a supporting instrument. When you say Do re mi fa so la ti do.. we have similar base notes called sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa. Any musical to be perfected comes with perfecting the 1st, 5th and the 8th note.. sa, pa, sa.. The sa pa sa is what forms the tunes, the base for different types of them. The Tanpura essentially helps the singer always keep the base of the tune. The man in yellow is sitting with a beating instrument called Mridangam. It is one of the primary percussion instrument in a carnatic music set up. And the last one is called Ghatam. It is another percussion instrument in south Indian music..it is a clay pot locally known as matka. Hope this helps :)

@@gauravmshr actually Veena is the generic name only for diffetent types of Veena. The Raagam part has Alaapanai ( Aalaap in Hindustani, I think) which has the Raga explored in Akaaram,while ,the Thaanam is what they reviewed, explores the Ragam with Thaalam,( beat) ,too ,using only the two syllables of 'thaa' & 'nam', hence the name Thaanam,while the Pallavi explores the Raagam by setting it to lyrics , usually only a couple of lines. The Tharana is equivalent to the Thillaana of Carnatic Music, I think. The RTP is at the pinnacle of mastery of Carnatic music.

Veena on the contrary is a full music instrument that has different types based on the region it is made from or how the sound box is carved like. Different wood gives a different musical edge to strings. It always played sitting down in crossed legged position. The instrument is horizontally resting where the sound dome sits on the right thigh or the floor..and the supporting dome sits on the left thigh. It depends on the instrument player's body gait and comfort level.

Apart from the folk music that varies from region to region, traditional Indian music is of two kinds - Carnatic (roots in South India) and Hindustani (from North India). Even instruments used in these two schools of music are different. For example, the sideways drums you saw in this video is called the mridangam - this instrument is used in Carnatic music, while the tabla - a 2-piece drum set is used in Hindustani. There are 3 different "big tall string instruments" in traditional Indian music. The one used in this video is called the Tanpura (in Hindi) or Tamboori (in other south Indian languages). It's purpose is similar to the A-440 thing that Rick was talking about. The other string instrument that looks similar to the Tanpura is the Sitar - this is what Pandit Ravishankar used to play. The Sitar is again a Hindustani instrument. The Carnatic equivalent of the Sitar, and probably the older one is the Veena. The position of the violin is such only because it is common practice to sit cross-legged while performing. So that position is most ergonomic. Two of the many many doyens of the Indian music fraternity you should check out - Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (Hindustani Classical) & MS Subbulakshmi (Carnatic Classical). Also check out this national integration video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MqYI0ijhk-8.html. This has most of the important Indian musical instruments, and also the prominent dance forms (each state had a different dance form).

What you saw the violinist do is replicate EXACTLY what Aruna did with her voice. It's one of the first things accompanying instrumentalists learn, is to be able to follow, memorize, and provide a real-time "reverb", so to speak. If you listen carefully, you'll hear her playing while Aruna is singing as well: just after she sings a note, the violinist will play it as if it's telepathic communication.

Hi, Rick and Korbin. This was Mrs.Aruna Sairam performing one of the most complex genres of Carnatic music.its called Raga, Tana, pallavi. You just listened to the tana aspect which is improvisation of a scale in a very rhythmic manner. The Raga aspect shows the extense and the possibility of the movement of notes within the framework set for a scale. The pallavi aspect is a very short lyrical piece which is sung . Here the singer uses a lot of mathematical calculations to show the expertise. Tq for reacting so wonderfully. Music is universal.

Do you know that most of the portion is imaginative (like raga alapana, swarams) and nothing is jointly practiced? The musicians just get together without knowing what the main singer is gonna sing. Yet its magic in the 3 hour concert 😊

That's the strange thing here . The most people here have forgotten the Indian classical music and it's hold on the soul whereas you people are appreciating it and reminding us how profound it has been since forever . Dominantly there are two types of classical music in India first being the Hindustani music and the second one is Carnatic music . Love for you both ❤️

With my limited knowledge , and from the experience in attending few of the Carnatic and Hindustani concerts , this style of "vaythari" ( not a part of lyric or without a lyric ) is a popular improvised version of "varnam" ( which can be simply translated to as the "explanation" of the raga ( scale) or like a warm-up of the raga ). Here the vocalist gives the notes in the scale, which notes are to be emphasized, the pattern of " arohana" ( ascending) and " avarohana" ( descending ) of the scale etc. This helps the instrumentalists and the audience to get connected to the raga ( scale) and thala ( rhythm, beat eg: 4/4, 7/8, 6/8, etc ) of the piece which they are going to perform. The piece "kriti" ( with the original lyric ) will follow after this. The style of "vaythari" featured in this video is often used in Hindustani Music. In fact these types of improvisation is used according to the taste of the audience. For a group of universal audience, these styles are accepted, whereas the concerts organized for the more orthodox and traditional places, where there may be more knowledgeable people in the audience, improvisations are not very common, the improvisation limits to the styles within the genre to avoid any "theoretical" conflicts. But if the artists are popular, they can present these improvisations as they can manage the heat of it !! The best example are in front of you, you see the violin in the Carnatic Music concert, although there are differences in using the instrument especially the way the artists holds it. This started from the Colonial era, had to go through many criticisms from the orthodox musicians at that time. Now its an unavoidable part of the Concert. So as the case of Mandolin, ( a version of Folk Guitar. Watch concerts of U.Srinivas , ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qrIepcMALCI.html ) Saxophone ( Watch concerts of Kadri Gopalnath, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jS93Dp3LPSY.html ). Also "Thabala" ( percussion instrument from Hindustani Music ) are widely used in Concerts. By the way, if you haven't got the info yet, the big long instrument which you asked in the video is "thampura" which gives the basic notes of the pitch used by the vocalists. , so that the instruments can tune to it. This is a different system from the Western music were the pitch of the notes, eg: C D D#, etc will be the same for every instrument associated in the piece. But in Carnatic and Hindusthani, the notes of the instruments are tuned to the pitch of the vocalists. As music has no ( and should not have ) boundaries, there should be cross-cultural experiments and improvisations, but there should be an orthodox version also. Both have to be promoted to keep the Music genre alive.

The tall string instrument is called a Tanpura. It has 6 strings, 5 are tuned to the base tune and the 1 with one of the other notes of the scale. The other one was indeed violin. Its mainly used in Carnatic music, never in hindustani music.

The Raga is the scale that is used in a particular piece. What she sang is a portion of the Raagam-thaanam- Pallavi which explores the Raagam/ Raaga/ scale. The ability to sing this is considered as having almost mastered the art of Carnatic Music.

There are different techniques used in Carnatic music system. These techniques are called Gamakas, which embellish the the notes in a specific scale to emote the feelings. These Gamakas (there are 10 of them) are similar to the techniques used in western music system like thrills, upward slide, downward slide, glide, jumping, hitting a note from previous note etc., Since Gamakas are used quite often, the violin players of Carnatic system rests the the scroll on the ankle. This gives them a chance to release the thumb which helps to move their left hand freely on the finger board to play Gamakas with much ease.

What she did is called 'Thanam' in Carnatic music. One whole composition has three major components called "Raagam", "Thanam" and "Pallavi". Thanam is the part where the vocalist sings both the raga structure along with the rhythmic syllables. Whereas Ragam is the part where the structure of the whole raga is sung. And Pallavi is the place where one lyrical composition is sung on the set raga. Here the vocalist demonstrated Thanam. And the long instrument is called Tambura. Its a string instrument. Pedro Eushtace studies under flute maestro Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. As a matter of fact, Pandit Hari Prasad also belong to the same music gharana(family) as Pandit Ravi Shankar was. Pandit Ravi Shankar's wife Annapurna Devi is the great teacher of Pandit Hari Prasad.

FYI... Ravi Shankar is Norah Jones Father, her sister is Anoushka Shankar who plays the sitar. They have several songs together but my faverate is called, "EASY" You might want to check it out along with their other music. Anoushks is quite the musician in her own right. It came out in 2007 but still a good song with Norha singing and Anoushka on sitar.

Innovative musicians adapted the violin, primarily a Western instrument, to Carnatic music and developed a whole new technique of playing, indistinguishable from its original sound patterns. The Violin is the only western instrument that has been completely absorbed into Indian music. It was introduced to India about 300 years ago. It is played in a sitting position and is held between the right foot and the left shoulder. The strings of the Violin in India are tuned to different notes than its western counterpart. The light tone of the steel string and the deep, almost human tone of the fourth string enrich the peculiarities of the Carnatic music.
