Americans react to Queen Hwa Sa's journey to stardom in her "Maria" music video for the first time!! 

Hwasa is catholic and Maria is her catholic name. She is basically talking to herself just like you guessed. There is a lot of symbolism both in her lyrics (that she wrote) and the MV (that she also wrote the script for) but all in all Hwasa said "The massage of Maria is that you're amazing just the way you are". Hwasa has been the target of too much critism from the moment she debuted but she never gave up and her songs are always based on her life stories so this is one of the main reasons why Maria is such an amazing song.

Maria is Hwasa's baptism name, so like you all thought, she's talking about herself. I hope y'all also react to LMM.. it's a very emotional song that visually describes her journey in a way🙏🏽

Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the FIRST Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always. LMM is another song from the same album with a wonderful cinematography MV and of course the song itself is gorgeous as hell. Even Cyndi Lauper said in an interview she has the song on her playlist.

The aftermath of her own death, shows how society views celebrities like a freakshow, lives served on a platter. Maria is one of the genius invention of Hwasa because it represents herself. Everyone vibes to Maria, everyone listens to Maria, but do they know the "Maria" herself? Like how everyone call Hwasa "an icon" and becomes who she is now. Yet no one truly understands what she went the song itself is kind of an irony imo. Everyone uses it, the song won several awards last year, when people talk about it they mention empowerment. When you listen to Maria, it's very glamorous. Then you look up into the lyric and it pierces your heart deeply.Just like how everyone knows Hwasa, how she's the one to encourage others, how she looks like she doesn't care about things people say to her. In reality, she cares. She cares about it so much it makes her hurt. She cares about it so much she might almost lost herself.And that's why Maria exist. To remind people and also herself, that Hwasa is a human too. Hwasa is a human that feels hurt by judgement of others. Maria is a reminder to people, to herself, that she is capable of this kind of feeling. And it's okay to feel that way.

I like how the tie dye shirt man thinks a lot about the lyrics and meaning of MV~ thank you so much for loving Hwasa's hardwork and art.

I see the comments broke down quite a bit about the symbolism of the video and the reason the song is written to “Maria” but I’d like to talk about the opening scene When she’s there serving her heart (and other things she’s created and released for the public to consume) you can see the other ppl at the table scrutinizing everything she brings out. Specifically, you see them being disinterested and critical of everything she brings them. That’s meant to represent how someone times she feels like no matter what she brings for the public to consume (whether that’s her music, her performances, or even- as seen in this video- her heart), the public simply don’t appreciate it and only send back negativity. So yeah, the video is visualizing a lot of her negative experiences through various scenes like that one, but in the midst of feeling constantly attacked Hwasa encourages herself with the chorus (which you know encourages and uplifts Maria). I was going to ask if they were watching the MV with subtitles, because they really seemed confused about it. I was anticipating a bit because I really liked how you introduced the song, and said to look out for it because this is a song she's writing to herself, but it's hard for your friends to know what Hwasa is saying to herself when there's no lyrics? 😅😅😅 Could I suggest giving them the option of having the subtitles on so they know what's going on?
