Rigsby is the typical miserly Landlord, in close contact with his tenants. Philip is an English, Public School educated intellectual, formerly from African descent. (Spot the African artefacts around the Room). Miss Jones is the prim and proper young lady, again highly educated and with impeccable manners, for whom Rigsby believes she has a ‘soft spot’. In the meantime, Alan (the ‘puney one’ with long hair) is trying to gain the attention of Miss Jones, amply demonstrated in this episode/clip where Rigsby and Alan vie with one another over their fitness! Other episodes are a MUST, and I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for uploading; I hope you do more of Rising Damp in the future. Best Wishes, Bob

I was quite young when Rising Damp was first aired, but like yourselves thoroughly enjoyed this clip. I think it has stood the test of time because it was character based and extremely well written, with its underlying themes of unrequited love and jealousy still relevant today. Rigsby was the archetypal dodgy landlord, as you can see from the décor and general condition of the house. The cast was supreme, as previous comments have alluded to. Richard Beckinsale had a huge future ahead of him until his tragic death from a heart attack at the age of 31 in 1979. He did leave us his legacy of Rising Damp and Porridge, both classics.

Rising Damp was hugely popular in the seventies in particular, Leonard Rossiter was brilliant as Rupert Rigsby , all the cast were excellent comic actors, sadly Richard Beckinsale died really young, his daughter is an actress, Don Warrington is still acting today and Frances de la Tour as well I think. Rossiter also played a character called Reggie Perrin which was also an excellent comedy, definitely showing my age now, check out Beckinsale in Porridge with Ronnie Barker, very seventies. As for Rising Damp Rigsby fancied Miss Jones but she fancied Phillip, this was the basis for much of the comedy in the series, not very PC but very amusing in my opinion, I think Rigsby basically believed God was an Englishman, different times, people didn't seem to be as easily offended when I was growing up as we were brutal in our ribbing of each other, somehow we survived without a safe space, go figure.

Everyone has missed an important point. Class! Rigsby felt inferior to Philip, who out classed him on every level. Background, education, accent, intelligence, looks, prospects and, even worse, Miss Jones likes him, not to mention the very obvious fact.....! Beckinsale is more Rigsby's class and is young, fit, pleasant and good looking but Rigsby feels superior to him because of his long hair. Miss Jones is also from a higher class background and this is noticeable in her attitude to Rigsby. Most of the humour is based on this dynamic, which is borne out by the episode where they attend an upmarket black tie dance. Rigsby wants a dance with Miss Jones and shouts out very loudly, and uncouthly to the band, "WHADDABOUT A WALTZ, THEN!!" Americans often find this element goes over their heads, but is very obvious to Brits.
@elvisleeboy
@elvisleeboy 3 года назад
Brilliantly concise description. I do think it is also important for viewers to know that, despite his snipes motivated by feelings of inferiority, Rigsby does grow to consider Philip a friend. There is a brilliant example of this in the film, when Rigsby finds out that Philip is not really the son of a chief, but is in fact from Croydon. Rigsby's response is heartfelt and subtle and it is a shame it was not in the series, because the film was poor in every other respect.

@kendee4421
@kendee4421 3 года назад
@@elvisleeboy the day you posted this the film was on after midnight on TV! Again, class was the theme. Miss Jones falls for the posh con man and Rigsby saves the day. Class prejudice was the mainstay of the humour. If you don't understand the dynamic it might be hard to appreciate why it is funny. Rigsby's piece with Philip near the end, where they have saved Miss Jones from being robbed is a warm statement from Rigsby, who tells him that although he is from Croydon, he could still unknowingly be the son of an African Prince. Friendship.

Rigsby is the seedy landlord of a house of low-rent bedsits. I lived in such a place for a year when I was a student in the late-1970s. The black character is British - he's not "African-American". He's got a "posh" accent, whereas the other characters speak with "working class" accents, though Miss Jones has airs and graces because she has middle-class pretensions. The black guy is the poshest here.

'Bedsit land', usually refferes to rundown cheap tenement accommodation, in old Victorian /Edwardian city areas. Poor facilities and lacking in very basic amenities. Hence the title, 'Rising Damp'.meaning foundations that aren't insulated from the ground. Rigsby is a typical miserly landlord, who interferes with his tenents private life, by bursting in on them.

I'm only in my 30s so Rising Damp is alot before my time but my Dad introduced me to it. It's a great character comedy with the old and deluded landlord Rigsby rubbing up against the young medical students who rent a room in his digs. It's a kind of love/hate relationship between them all and the comedy is in the clashes between the generations and different cultures. Philip is supposedly an African Prince with several wives back home and Rigsby views him with both suspicion and admiration. He views the long haired Alan as an unmanly layabout due to his more modern outlook which clashes with Rigsby's old fashioned views. It won't get shown on TV anymore as its certainly very non-PC by moderns standards which just makes it all the more hilarious. I'd strongly recommend getting the DVD boxset.

Ironically, Leonard Rossiter was a very fit man. He was a keen and very competent sportsman playing football, cricket, tennis and squash in later life. However, equally ironically he died aged just 57 of heart disease. In any event, a truly brilliant actor. Unfortunately Leonard Rossiter was not the only one from that cast to die relatively you. Richard Beckinsale, father of Kate Beckinsale died age just 31, of a massive heart attack. Alan and Philip are both students (though, realistically, they were far too old) and along with Miss Jones are occupying bed-sits in Rigsby's dilapidated house. Alan was played by Richard Beckinsale, who had first appeared in Jack Rosenthal's sit-com 'The Lovers'. He had perfect comic timing, and a fresh faced complexion which he said came from being a quarter Burmese. He died tragically young (aged 31) followed five years later by Leonard Rossiter (aged 57). He has a very famous daughter, Kate Beckinsale, who seems to have inherited his looks. Don Warrington is still soldiering on. He has been in all eight series of 'Death in Paradise' playing the island's chief commissioner of police.

Rising Damp started as a Play then it was adopted as a Television Series. The Black Guy was going to college and hid (or claimed) he was actually African Royalty from the Landlord. Usually the Landlord was much more abrasive to the tenants. The Woman has a crush on the Landlord or any man for that matter. Leonard Rossiter also played a brilliant role in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. It is about the ultimate Mid Life Crisis. When he tries to succeed he fails. When he tries to fail he succeeds.

Philip was the black guy, he spoke with an upper class accent, Rigsby was always trying to date francis but she always rebuffed him, it was really funny the things he got up to, really popular series at the time. Sadly richard beckinsale died in from a rare heart problem in his sleep in 1979 he was only 32 at the time. Francis is still alive she is 74. Leonard rossiter (rigsby) died waiting to go on stage 1984 heart attack again. he was only 57. ( Philip ) Don warrington black guy is still alive he is 68. May i suggest a series called porridge with ronnie barker and richard beckinsale, this is one of my favourites especially the film version i think you will like it.

Sorry to correct you, but for the record, Richard Beckinsale, died in his sleep, at home. Eventually ,it was discovered that he had a fairly rare Heart problem, and had told his wife that evening, he wasn't feeling very well, and went to bed. As you correctly said, It was Leonard Rossiter, who died back stage, from a massive heart attack, in 1984

they were students and Rigsby was the landlord. Philip is a planning student who claims to be the son of an African Chief, Alan is a medical student and the rent rooms from Rigsby... Loved this program growing up and love it more now as I can understand the nuances and undercurrents to the humour. they dont make telly like this anymore.

A tragedy for Richard Beckinsale to die of a heart attack at the age of just 31. Porridge was another fantastic series. Sitcoms cannot match the older stuff nowadays.

Rising Damp is one of my favourite British comedies. Leonard Rossiter was perfect to play Rigsby. His manic energy and quick wit suited this role to the ground. RIP Leonard Rossiter 🌈🙏🏻 Don Warrington played Phillip and he was the coloured guy in the show to your question of who’s who. Miss Jones was played by Frances De La Tour Lastly - the absolutely gorgeous Richard Beckinsale 😍😍 played Alan in the maroon tracksuit. He was a real hottie 🔥🔥 in the 70’s and pin up guy. If you know or have watched the Underworld movies starring Kate Beckinsale - Richard was her dad. We lost him way too early at age 31 RIP 🌈🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😢😢 a waste of a gorgeous man who was lovely inside and out 👏🏻👍🏻

Many comments here about Richard's very sad and untimely death. He had just completed the Porridge film. May also have been working on stage but he was also busy on set in the BBC's comedy called Bloomers. Check his last ever appearance in Episode 5 on Y/T. He looks rather pale and ill with dark eyes. Apparently on set, it was noticed that he was getting greyer and greyer in the face. He was complaining of shooting pains in his arm but remarkably he was mentioning this to all and sundry for several days. An earlier visit turned up a problem with too high cholesterol. He was so much in demand, he could not turn down work. A phenomenal workload caused him too much strain and was ultimately his undoing. Very, very sad; a great and outstanding actor at the top of his profession. R.I.P Richard.

Sadly, Richard Beckinsale (Alan), the actor, died of a heart attack, as did Leonard Rossiter, (Rigsby), if I recall correctly. As for Philip's accent, it is RP (Received Pronunciatian) and not regional.

The tenants are in bedsits. Something you don't see much now. But it was cheap for students and the low paid. I lived in a bedsit for a while when I left home and it wasn't much different except for our landlady. I remember, when I was in a bedsit, I was watching TV with a friend in the room below, we had the TV on and the main light. When the landlady suddenly burst in turned the light off muttering something about her electricity bill and promptly left. The funny part of it was electricity was on a pay meter. Sadly the fun of living and surviving in bedsits is a long gone pastime, at least here in London.

The set up is Rigsby is the landlord of a tatty lodging house, renting out three bedsits, one to Miss Jones, with whom he is in love. One to two students; Alan who is a bit of a loser and very insecure, he looks up to Philip, the good looking confident African son of a chief. Miss Jones is in love with Philip, who of course has no interest in her. Rigsby is confused by Philip, he is old fashioned enough to think that he is better than a black man, yet he finds himself jealous of him, more than that though liking and respecting him. The third room had various tenants to facilitate guest stars in some episodes. Like most great British Comedies, and it is one of the best with an astonishingly great cast. (Tragically Richard Beckinsale died a few years after this, and Leonard Rossiter followed in the mid eighties.), it is about losers. But ones that we can empathise with. Philip seems like he is the exception, but in the end it turns out he is a fantasist.

Quite a few years ago I had the misfortune of picking up 'Miss Jones' (Frances de la Tour) as a cab fare, She never stopped moaning about how fast my taxi meter was going up as she smoked one cigarette after another, I dread to think how she found the prices where she went which was Champneys Health resort near Tring !, A very exclusive place to stay at that time.

Philip is an African tribal prince educated in an English public school, which accounts for the accent. As an aside you may be interested to know, (in view of the fitness element of this episode) that both Rossiter and Beckensdale died fron heart attacks.

In the 70s Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Dad's Army and The Good Life were also excellent. Then Only Fools and Horses in the early 80s onwards, followed by BlackAdder series 2, 3 and 4, and I also liked Red Dwarf. Oh and do try The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, which also stars Rossiter.
