I guess the biggest difference is that black people in South Africa are affiliated with various tribes: Zulu, Xhosa, etc. We coloureds have no such affiliation. We also, for the most part, don't understand or speak any of the native African languages. Most of us speak English and Afrikaans (a language descended from Dutch).

Also, I think people don't understand it's an official classification by the South African government. That's literally how we are classified. On any form here in South Africa, if you get to the section about race/ethnicity, you will see the word " coloured" there and you must tick that box. But coloured is basically like a creole identity and you will find alot of people with mix heritage in Africa,but especially in the island countries that form part of Africa in places like Mauritius,Seychelles and even Angola.

@@ShaunTayabaReacts guys y'all are familiar with our national rugby team, the Springboks. Now, Tyla are the same race as me, Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, Edwill van der Merwe, Immanuel Libbok, Damian Willemse etc. Our captain, Siya Kolisi is black. You see, she never cared to dive deeper into her lineage so to speak and she never cared to know the history of black Americans. Coloured in South Africa ain't mixed raced. Trevor Noah aren't coloured, he's mixed raced. Before the European dutch settlers arrived in what is today known as the Cape/Cape Town, there were tribes, most notably, the Khois & the Sans. In what is today known as the Northern Cape, were the Nama & Damara tribes. They had their own languages, just like the Xhosa tribes etc. They are all black. But the Nama people also known as the Eland , were very light skin people. Now, the dutch people arrived in the Cape in the middle 1600's and interacted with the Khois & Sans. Idk if it were the dutch or the British people who brought Malaysians with em to the Cape as slaves but Malaysians were brought here. As time went by, the dutch with the Khois & Sans & Malaysians & Namas & Damaras formed the language called Afrikaans. And they spoke that language as their first tongue. While the other black tribes stuck to their own ethnic languages. When the Brits declared that the war was over in the early 1900's, everything went on as normal. But then the white Afrikaners (dutch settlers) formed a political party called the National Party and they brought in the racial classifications. The Nama, Khois, Sans, Damaras (tho black) and Malaysians were called coloured because the majority of em didn't speak their ethnic languages as a first language anymore. Afrikaans were their language, like the Boers. While the other black people still spoke their different ethnic languages like Xhosa, Zulu etc, so, they were called black. So, coloured people made up of black ethnicities, Nama, Khoi, San, Damara & even Bantu were called coloured because they spoke Afrikaans and no longer their ethnic languages just like the Malaysians who also speak Afrikaans. That's how we came about. Now we can say that we are mixed with Malaysians but not all of us are. Since then in order to be coloured, both parents must be coloured, since it's a race. To be black, your mother tongue ain't Afrikaans but your ethnic language. It's so difficult to explain and i can't simplify it any more than this. Also our languages aren't recognized as official languages because the majority, 98% of coloureds speak Afrikaans, it's our home language. The black people's languages are recognized as official languages because they preserved it by not choosing to speak the language of the oppressor. Trevor Noah was born in apartheid, and during that time, coloured were already an established race, hench why he ain't coloured but mixed race. In old America I believe he would've been called "colored" but today just black! As a coloured, I can't deem a black American, yes black American, not African American as a black person because they don't speak an indigenous African language as their first tongue. But, I won't make that an issue, I'll just see em as another person but I know we the same. Our races are: white, black, coloured & Asian. Coloured is a race in South Africa, not mixed race people.
@travisberthold9659
@travisberthold9659 17 дней назад
@@thegreytoneI agree with most of what you said but don't hide from the fact that the coloreds benefited from what the "oppressor" did. Oppressed with food, oppressed with shelter, oppressed with clothes and jobs. This is why Coloureds believe that life was much better in the country under their "oppressors". Coloreds were always given preferential treatment by the Afrikaaners compared to the blacks, and were often regarded as being intellectually superior to their black counterparts, and quite possibly to the Asians as well. Why? Because the colored were part Afrikaaner and share the same culture that is why. This is also why not only the Portuguese man, the Lebanese man, the Greek man, the predominant Afrikaaner and British man ALONG with the Coloured man are discriminated against within the current employment market within the country.

@@travisberthold9659 perhaps, my mother stems from Khoi (black) with a little Malay on her side, she's dark in complexion, she was born when coloured were already an established race. My father is Nama (black) with a little Griqua (mixture of black & white) on his side & he's pale in skin colour, also born during apartheid when coloured were already an established race. I'm coloured because both my parents are coloureds and I'm light brown whilst my sister from these same parents is pale. My mother said she felt apartheid, my dad says not so much, because he looked just like the oppressors. But that's none of my concern, I were born free. Yes, black people in South Africa are the pinnacle now and I'm happy 4 em!! I just go with the flow of the status quo.

What I don't understand is the fact that people are attacking Tyla for this whole thing. Like Tyla obviously knows why she said she's coloured. The definition of the word 'coloured' has a different meaning in SA than in other countries. It is one of the races in our country. And I'm honestly tired of this topic really.

Hi Real South African Coloured here. And here is something alot of people around the world (especially Americans) don't understand about Coloured people and Coloured Culture. First of all, it's nothing to do with anti-Blackness like alot of ignorant Americans on TikTok have claimed. It has solely to do with Culture and generational Coloured ancestry. So a mixed person (one parent Black, one parent White) isn't Coloured. They might look like a Coloured, just as a Korean might be mistaken as a Chinese person, but that's not the case. Secondly, being Coloured isn't about having lighter skin colour. (Majority of us may be lightskin), but we come in all shades. There are Black skinned Coloureds (Benni McCarthy, former South African Footballer), there are White skinned Coloureds (YOMA, South African rapper), Indian looking Coloureds (Emo Adams, South African Comedian) and even Vietnamese looking Coloureds like myself. The point is, being Coloured is not trying to seperate from Blackness or Whiteness, being Coloured is about having multiple ancestry (European, African and Asian) with multiple generational Coloured family members (our parents and grandparents and so on and so on being Coloured since the start of the 17th and 18th Century) and being Coloured is about having Coloured Traditions, Culture, Language and way of life. The African-American hate towards Coloured people should stop. I know it is just a small minority, but ignoring our existence is indirecting attempting to erase our identity. We also belong to South Africa and to the World. Ignorant Americans should stop policing race. And by the way, not every one in South Africa speaks like Tyla, that is a proudly Durban Coloured accent.

We are unique in the ancestrial world classification. Are simple coloureds. Charlamagne is wrong... Mixed Race is Not Coloured. I'm a coloured South African. We do have mixed-race people in South Africa, but we also have Coloureds. These are two differenct ethnicities, races and cultures. Trevor Noah is Mixed-Race and does not share coloured culture. His a direct mix of white and black, so he is mixed race. Coloureds are multiracial ethnic communities in South Africa who have ancestry from African, European, and Asian people, who have their own distinct culture.

Coloureds in South Africa are not White, not Black, not mixed. Our parents are not necesasarily from different races, but they are from the same race, namely Coloured. Tyla is not mixed. Both her parents are Coloured. Coloured people are statutorily classified as such. Coloureds and Blacks are distinctly different races in South Africa. We, Coloured people, don't even understand the culture of the different Black ethnic groups in South Africa, we cannot even differentiate between the different Black tribes, we don't speak their languages, and Black people don't know or understand Coloured people's culture and most of them cannot speak Coloured people's language either. It's complex, like I said, and even my explanation might be flawed, because there are exceptions to everything I mentioned here. Fact is, if one wants to explain Coloured in South Africa, we'll have to go back to 1652 and even further back. It is a totally different history to that of Blacks in America, or even the rest of Africa. We are extremely diverse in culture, language, etc.
