And there were those tedious jokes about the blue crisps being too soft and salty. And who hasn't chomped on one in the dark of the cinema, or showered the neighbouring seats with crisps when the greaseproof paper bag split under too vigorous a shake. Yes Jemima, when Daddy was your age crisps and other goodies came in paper bags, ice cream in greasy cardboard and fresh cream in cardboard containers. Bring them all back and save the planet! What do you mean does cardboard grow on trees? Potato starch inside the bag and also use it to make the bag maybe?

There is a difference in the UK between best before and use by dates - items with a use by date can be harmful if it goes off, best before is just a guide for the product to be in best condition but it wont hurt you beyond the date. I think there is similar in the USA. Also a lot of Mr Kipling packaging has characters from the children's author Roald Dahl books.
@WhiteUnicorn82
@WhiteUnicorn82 3 года назад
Any good can he harmful if "gone off", regardless of what is written on a packet. A "use by" date is for increasing profit and reducing loss - the latter is the key when understanding the dating. There is a difference. If course, people will always be duped because people are stupid and willing to believe anything if told by government 😕 Precisely how this and other countries have ended up the way they have. Did you research the dating topic before posting, or did you just feel happy enough to pass on the erroneous information because daddy government told you? Do you also load your kids with carcinogens and heavy metals daily, to then question how and why the cancer rates are increasingly high? (Pretty much all processed (beyond naturally produced) food here contain carcinogens). Not saying you are one of the stupid ones, but most are. You just seemed to unquestionably pass on erroneous information - I'm increasingly frustrated with people's attitudes that have brought us to where we are now, then complain, so forgive my somewhat abrupt tone. Not meaning to come across as antagonistic.
@WhiteUnicorn82
@WhiteUnicorn82 3 года назад
You mention "Mr Kippling" brand, which is laces with carcinogens and neurotoxins. I'm not accusing you of anything, but if you consume that, (or allow your family too), or other products that contain such poisons, then you are entirely responsible for the ailments that arise. That was pretty much my point after reading the nonsense about dates. You're correct in saying that [we] were informed of the reason of the dating system, but it's easily proved as nonsense if one just spends 45 seconds finding out! Be safe and enjoy your day :-)
@WhiteUnicorn82
@WhiteUnicorn82 3 года назад
Also, a "Best before" date doesn't mean its OK after that date. Not at all. You are utterly wrong. It means, literally, it is best before said date. There is no mention, nor inference, that it would be safe after, or even before the given date. Again, the date is often confusing for people as they feel it means something. It is nonsense! It would be correct to use absolutely any date as a "Best Before...".
@PippetWhippet
@PippetWhippet 3 года назад
@@WhiteUnicorn82 it’s ironic you’ve gone on a three post rant about passing on incorrect information, when part of your rant is saying that the Mr Kipling brand puts neurotoxins in its products, so shall we ask you the same question that you asked the op? Did you research this for yourself, or did you just believe someone else who told you this. By the way, I don’t know what you mean by “research”, but I hope you don’t mean read or watch or listen too other people who want to do all the thinking for you. What I’m asking is have you molecularly dissected a mr kiplings product, isolated a chemical and proven its a neurotoxin. Then passed peer review. (No you haven’t, given you state that this “research” takes 45 seconds. My friend, in 45 seconds you can find someone confidently telling you that the earth is flat because water can’t curve, or photographs of the earth from space being all globeular, you can find someone telling you that Christianity is all true, Sikhism is all true, Buddhism is all true, Judaism is all true, or that no religions are all true. You can find a man who thinks only he exists and we are all figments of his imagination. You’ve done exactly what you accuse the op of, believed someone, only the people the op believed have peer reviewed research to back up their opinions, you do not, in fact, the people you believed are known liars and conmen)
@theeccentricmilliner5350
@theeccentricmilliner5350 3 года назад
@@WhiteUnicorn82 I'm afraid that your reasoning is not quite clear here - There has to be a distinction between use by and best before, otherwise why have 2 different formats? I was simply pointing out the distinction. Surely any production of any food is artificial. Even washing and peeling and cooking a are artificial processes. Also how can you be totally sure that the (obviously) organic food on your table is totally free of potentially harmful products from the air, rain, sun, and soil? Oxygen itself can be harmful as it is an oxidising agent. Got to go have an oxidiser to design.

the ready salted crisps used to be a thing years ago - it made for the experience as you salted them yourself . I think you tried walkers - i only remember "SMITHS" ready salted back in the 1980s "SMITHS" is a pretty good crisp manufacturer - they used to make a pub snack called "scampi fries" - very good crisps - they also used to create another pub snack called "bacon fries" i bought a 8 pack recently and I think they changed the recipe for the worse .. They used to be the crunchiest crisps ever . ( when i say pub snack - i mean they were only really sold in pubs - but now they are in the shops ) Another good brand of mainstream crisps is a company called TAYTO - i think irish ( but owned by the germans now ) ... their cheese and onion crisps are like no other

I love twiglets. Salt and vinegar is my top flavour of all time. The ones you call tirels, are actually pronounced tirrells. But spelt with a Y. I've eaten both wosits and cheetohs, both have cheese flavour, but different textures.

Twiglets are of course harvested at the start of spring, from the ear wax of the Buxton Beer Badger. A rare delicacy which, as a seasonal product used to command a high price. Unfortunately they have farms that use domesticated badgers and now the flavour is not even close to the free range wild flavour of the original.

Twiglets really had their day in the 70's and 80's. If you had a house party, you'd put out cheese and pineapple cubes on cocktail sticks, some salted peanuts, and a bowl of Twiglets so it looked like you'd made an effort - knowing full well no-one was going to eat them, because they are vile. One Mr. Bean episode has him hosting a party where he has no party snacks, so he uses real twigs and smothers them in marmite to fake Twiglets...and that's about as close to an accurate description of what they actually taste like as I have ever seen lol! Legend has it that when a tree anywhere gets cut down, Mother Nature exacts revenge by force feeding someone an entire packet of those abominable "snacks".

Twiglets are like marmite, which they are coated in, one either loves them or hates them. Best before dates on cakes, biscuits and crisps is a guide only if still sealed, they contain so much sugar/ salt and oil that they are still OK weeks after. Stores used to sell them at a discount if close to or just past the date. Even use by dates are often OK a for few days after if kept below 5℃. Just follow the old rules of appearance, smell and if precooked or dairy, tastes OK.

So funny to watch. Just a little suggestion perhaps have a drink to hand as that was a lot of different, savoury/ spicy/ sweet stuff one after another and some were stronger flavours than others there. The Pickled Onion Monster Munch are supposed to be like that, their crunchy paw shape texture is just how it should be and the Salt n Shake is a nostalgic throw back to the first crisps made as that's what you would get either a blue bag or blue twist of paper with the salt in. Other flavourings came later. I had family who worked in crisp manufacturing (UK) in the 1930's, 40's and 50's so learnt a bit about how they were made.

I've done a lot of "cady swaps" in my time from people all over the globe. And I can see why the US might find our UK stuff a bit bland. All the stuff I've had from the States has been so overly salty or seasoned or the cakes (I only tried twinkies) tasted so so sweet it almost tasted like chemicals. A while ago here in UK there was legislation brought in to reduce salt and sugar in all snacks and foods. So that's probably why you might find some things not as strong in flavour as your USA equivalents... If you like things salty, like you say around @8:30 you should buy 'Pink Himalayan Salt'.. It's just as bad for you, so don't believe the healthfood myths, but it just tastes so much better. It has an almost sweet taste. Our takeaways (pizza shops, kebab shops etc..) also have something called Red Salt that they put on your fries. It's basically a mix of garlic powder, Smoked Paprika, and something else that I can't recall. lol. We can also buy it in most large grocery stores and is called "Chip Spice"... That stuff will blow your mind with how good it makes ordinary fried potatoes taste.

I went for breakfast in my work canteen and chose my usual, porridge which is cooked oats with milk. They always had a selection of toppings you could add, such as honey, syrup, jam etc. This particular morning there was a plate of a 'chocolate' type spread there. I spooned it onto the porridge, paid and sat down. I immediately to a large portion of the chocolate with the spoon of porridge only to react with disgust. The new young lad at the counter had put Marmite into a large boll with the toppings in error. I ate a large quantity of Marmite all at once. It took hours to get the taste out of my mouth. If you have ever tried just a little you will know what I mean.

Salt n Shake was basically an 80s/90s novelty for Kids that surprisingly is still a thing, it just never worked, all the salt would settle at the bottom so you'd end up with just dry flavourless crisps and a bag of salt, but as a teenager there was something fun about it. Monster Munch pickled onion is hit and miss, I'd say 50% of people like it, same with twiglets/marmite. Tyrrells are basically luxury crisps over here. I didn't know Discos were still around, would definitely not be buying them if I saw them. Great selection you have there.
