rule of thumb is that biscuits (coming from the Latin bis coctus or twice cooked) are hard usually cooked that way to make them last on long sea voyages ( and as the UK has a long sea faring history might be why the name is used more over this side of the pond.), whereas cookie (coming from the dutch koekje or little cake) are much softer because they use a raising agent in the process.

Bournville is pronounced 'bornville'. Bournville is an area in the City of Birmingham where Cadbury's chocolate was created. If you ever come over to England, you can visit the factory. Bourneville, was created by the Cadbury family, as a model village, (possibly for it's factory workers; as we're many other Quaker millionaire family businesses off the 19tg-early 20th century). But, it's now literally a model village as their are so many planning bylaws, that buildings can't be changed, etc etc.

There was a long running court case over Jaffa Cakes. The Food Agency claimed that they fell under biscuit rather than cake. The reason for the court case was that biscuit have tax added to them where as cake doesn’t, so it would have been expensive for Mcvities. Mcvities won claiming biscuits are hard and go soft if left out, whilst cakes are soft and go hard if left out
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 3 года назад
Very true, and considering unlike the US the UK has the displayed price on store shelves including tax, it would have either effected profits if they kept the retail price the same and the government got a cut, or they would have had to increase the price to compensate and lost consumers, so it was a big deal to avoid the tax by presenting a solid legal argument for why they were exempt.

Biscuit is the word we use for every type of “cookie” so like the “digestives” and the “hobnobs” are all types of biscuits for example. We also say cookie but that is for “chocolate chip cookies” etc. It’s weird to explain i guess. Yes, Digestives were meant to aid one's digestion - hence the name - and, yes, it is absolutely the primary UK tea-dipping biscuit. The "Rich Tea" Digestive biscuits will always be found next to the tea bags, in the kitchen cupboard, for tea-dipping purposes. Mainly because it soaks up the tea into the biscuit, like it's a delicious "tea sponge". (And, yeah, don't worry. Though the Digestive does contain fibre - a bit of "roughage" - and that's why it's claimed to be "good for the digestion", it's not that much and isn't potent. Even if you eat the whole packet to yourself, you won't be rushing to the toilet. It's just a biscuit with fibre in it, not a laxative.)

Turkish Delight is a sweet rosewater-flavoured jelly big cube covered in icing sugar, but it should be really soft and light not the chewier jelly that’s in those chocolate bars. Turkish Delight is an acquired taste - I'm guessing (from similar reactions to it on other US youtubers' channels) that rose isn't a popular flavour over there (it's not very common over here either). Digestive biscuits were originally marketed as aiding digestion because they contained quite a lot of bicarbonate of soda. Flake is great because the ripples give an increased surface area and it tastes like you're getting more chocolate than you actually are. They are also traditionally served stuck in a cone of ice cream. A less messy version is "Twirl", which is the same thing but coated in smooth chocolate so it doesn't fall apart so much. Bournville (pronounced born-ville) is the name of the company-built town where Cadbury's factory is based, near Birmingham.

In the uk the bloke who made the Cadbury’s empire made a factory for the chocolate and he called it Bournville. He also made a complete village for the workers there, he was a bit of a philanthropist, it’s still there from the 1800’s, the factory is still there too and is now a tourist attraction. You can taste the original use for the cocoa bean as a drink by the Aztecs (or Myan’s) I think it has chilli in it but you can also buy the broken choc bars by the bag there, and of course it is a museum.

It isn't even really a village any more, it is part of the suburban sprawl of Birmingham, although it does retain a better sense of community than most suburbs. When it was built, it would have been outside the city and gave factory workers a chance to get away from the smog and smoke of the city and have a decent house with a garden to grow their own vegetables, and they were often built with good parks and other amenities to help workers live healthy and constructive lives (eg social clubs and libraries rather than pubs and betting shops!). That was quite a common idea in the late 19th century; other examples are Saltaire in Bradford (textile mills) and Port Sunlight near Liverpool (Lever Brothers).

There is a history in the UK of philanthropic Quakers setting up companies in the past, where the workforce was provided with more than decent housing and they were treated extremely well. The Cadbury family was one of these, and they built a "model" or ideal village for their workers which is called Bournville. Rowntrees is another sweet manufacturer founded by Quakers and they made the Fruit Pastilles. The also built an ideal garden village for their workers. The Turkish Delight is made by Frys who were also Quakers. Cadburys took over Frys and then Kraft foods took over Cadburys. I somehow think those three original Quakers would be quaking in their graves.
