Good evening! And thank you very much for tuning in to this walk in one of the prettiest towns in Buckinghamshire: Amersham! At least, the Old Town, almost perfectly-preserved over the last 300 years, is an absolute joy to walk through, with historic pubs, halls, gardens and more lining the busy High Street. There's a lot of surprising history in Amersham, but one thing we didn't get the chance to touch on in the video was the town's earliest origins. The town is said to have been founded in 796 AD by the Anglo-Saxons, and was named 'Agmodesham', simply referring to 'the village of Ealhmund'. A small settlement at first, the name eventually morphed into 'Amersham' by the late medieval era, when passing trade led the town to take the shape it retains to this day! Also, on a slightly less cheery note, the graveyard around St. Mary's Church is known for the burial place of Ruth Ellis, who was the last woman to be hanged in Britain, back in 1955. Her grave was destroyed in 1982, but now remains unmarked in the parish churchyard.
What a beautiful looking town, and with such history. The old parts of England's villages, towns, and cities are, to me, the most magical parts. So full of fascinating local, and world, history. Thank you for another fascinating work through a part of England's history! Great stuff!

What an attractive wee town. It seems kind of strange that you can get there by UndergrounD, same idea as Epping and Loughton, away out the other side of London, on the Central Line.
Dull as it may seem to show the empty space used as market in medieval Amersham ( see at 0.52 secs), it is, for the keen eye, a noteworthy register by Let´s, because it shows there was a certain pattern for the markets of medieval era. Compare, for instance, with the historical "Piazza dei mercanti " at Milan ( is just short step through G. Maps) and one realizes that both have the same structure, a hall under a building, surrounded by arches, where people used for trading and selling, while on the above floor the county had offices. These small spaces fostered the creation of much of commercial practices of today. Certainly Milano´s being older, what proves that this conception of market lasted for long. Go ahead Let´s, Oxford will bestow you a title.
