I haven't done any stick welding for about 4 decades. I bought the red model a few weeks ago and have been relearning and rehoning my "skills" such as they are. This little machine is easy to use and works great on 110v. I can't wait to get it on 220v. What helped me was that I tried various amp settings, welded slow, welded fast, burned holes in the scrap deck plate that I was practicing on and did a lot of the "mistakes" that you can find on YT. It gave me a feel for what felt and looked right.

THANKS multiple reviews with 220 but NICE that you use it on 110 and it WORKS... New to welding & having some issues, but important to know/see that YOU ARE DOING IT ! ! ! !

Yeh cool, thanks for the review! I'm looking into the Amico 160, there's actually a few different models of them on amazon now, don't really know the differences between them other than one also has an arc force setting dial. I'm fairly new to welding, have a century 90 amp flux core currently.

Hey I just wondering if this stick welder machine can weld shock tabs on my truck using 120v plug on 7018 - 1/8" rods. The tabs are 5/16" thick. Thank You
@TheMagnumChannel
@TheMagnumChannel 5 лет назад
Probably. Kinda depends on the outlet. I was running off a 20A outlet but I don’t know about 1/8” 7018 on 15A. Even if it wouldn’t, you could do a multi-pass weld with 3/32” easy enough. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Thanks for replying! I am using a 20 amp breaker on 120 volt standard plug. I just wanted to run 7018- 1/8 rods, or 1/8 rods, Thank You. 135 amps and You was using a extension cord, I will plug into plug on garage, I Hope it runs these rods Thank You

Hook it to 220 and the 6011 will burn clean. 1/8 7018 is going to be your best rod on this machine in 120v.

Im not a welder,but if im gonna buy a higher amp welding machine like 300 amp welder,what is the advantage of higher amp welder compare to this 160amp?what projects i can do with 300 amp that i cant with 160amp?
@TheMagnumChannel
@TheMagnumChannel 5 лет назад
The short answer is not too much you can’t do with this one...the backbone of the stick industry is 1/8” 7018, which runs at about ~120...so to need more than 160 you’re going to be into some pretty thick heavy steel!! Hope that helps.

Help, I was given aluminum arc welding rods and it doesn't have any info on using AC or DC, my question is I have the same welder as you and do I reverse the cables to weld with aluminum rods, sorry I'm new to this
@TheMagnumChannel
@TheMagnumChannel 6 лет назад
No worries, we all continue learning. To answer your question, this specific welder only runs DCEN and DCEP...AC isn’t possible. Stick welding aluminum is kinda tricky, you’ll want to preheat your workpiece with a torch and cool it down kinda slow like afterwards. I’m not sure which would work better as far as DCEN or DCEP, usually it is marked on the rod packaging, otherwise usually you can kinda tell if you try both polarities. Hope that helps, otherwise the weldingtipsandtricks channel has a lot of solid info on arc welding! Thanks for watching!

What rod you recommend for welding car and truck frame?
@TheMagnumChannel
@TheMagnumChannel 4 года назад
7018 is definitely the strongest. You could do a 6011 core for deeper penetration, and then cap it with 7018 if you’d like...but with bumps and the stress on a vehicle frame, 7018 is the boss! It’s a low hydrogen rod and is the backbone of the construction industry 👍🏻

Cool video. I'm not a welder by any means. But I'm looking into purchasing this exact welder. Would this be a good little welder for at home repairs such as mower decks and small tractor attachments? Also small fabrication? I like working with metal as art.
@TheMagnumChannel
@TheMagnumChannel 6 лет назад
Thanks. This would be a fantastic welder for small repairs, and it runs the Lincoln fleetweld 6011 very well. It also ran 3/32 and 1/16 6013 pretty good too for artwork...obviously a mig machine is better for metal art, but this could definitely serve that purpose on a budget...I have another video where I welded up a hay ring with this machine. Perfect example of a typical use. Thanks for watching!

I recently got this welder too and for $149 I’m impressed. I’ve got decent results with 3/32 and 1/8” 6011/6013 rods and even messed with some 3/32 Lincoln Excalibur 309L rods seeing if I could make a front load washing machine spider.

@TheMagnumChannel 5 лет назад
Hmm, can’t say that I have, it does very well with extension cords though... I welded some 3/32” 6011 70 amps on a 100 ft 12 gauge cord, did great. Have you tried the rod in question on regular power?
@TomFromYoutube
@TomFromYoutube 5 лет назад
@@TheMagnumChannel I made a 240v circuit at my house. Runs real good on that. The generator would run it but wouldn't really power up until the arc was started. I just ended up using the flux core wire welder to finish. Had no problems at all running that.

I run this exact machine off 30 amp rv plug on 3550 running watt generator. Spin it to 135 amps zero problem. Tunning the output voltage on your generator may help.
@TomFromYoutube
@TomFromYoutube 5 лет назад
@@JohnDoe-vq8bg good to know. The generator is pretty old. 5000 watts I think. The problem I had is the motor wouldn't spin up til it had a load on it. So it was hard to get it going. Maybe the newer generators act different?

The company website lists two similar units . (ARC-160D . red) and (DC-160A blue) . Read somewhere that the red model is newer version with cheaper stick holder? Same price so does anyone know? thanks,

FYI-- I spoke with Amico sales/tech support today, and found out there are a few mods to the original 160 amp unit. Original blue case S160DR was leftover design from a previous company product. They added some features for the S160AM (AM for Amico) then made some additional improvements for the ARC160D (red case with plastic cover).. Also the new red cased unit has a thermostat controlling the fan, and a re-designed stick/rod holder. Old original unit (S160DR) goes for $139 and has been selling well for them. The two newer units S160AM, and ARC160D are listed for $149 with free shipping and one year warranty on their webpage.. I ordered the new red model to replace a basic HC AC buzzer that worked, but was getting dated.. Again- just FYI if anyone else asks- bottom line the DC inverter system is same, just a few mods since Amico purchased the old company.

6011 rod is a deep penetrating fast freezing rod developed for AC welder as they won't run 6010. Problem is these cheap DC inverters won't run 6010 either. Unless you're doing code work I guess it doesn't really matter. A stick welder is a very simple power source and about as basic as it gets and most welders do a decent job of running a fair bead. You didn't say anything about how well the high freq. start works or the lack of inductance control. As you are obviously not a welder I hope people don't take your review with too many grains of salt. You usually get what you pay for. I would keep it on that trash can for awhile until it has proven itself. I would be very surprised if they honored their stated warranty and would be even more surprised if you can ever get replacement parts for it.
