Time for some more recapping of an Amiga but this is one we haven't covered on the channel before, the Amiga CD32. The system belongs to ‪@GouldFishOnGames‬ he asked me to carry out this necessary maintenance to his beloved Commodore Console.
Make sure to check out the Gould Fish On Games RU-vid channel, here is his review of the CD32 console: • The Amiga CD32 : Bette...

Thanks for recapping the machine, lovely video as always mate! can't wait to boot up some games on it, and I might have to switch to xbench as my current CF card boots to a regular workbench.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
You're very welcome. X-bench is a great front end solution for running software. It'll handle WHDload games or demos plus you can add your own hdd installed titles as well. There is also Tiny Launcher which is a more simplistic front end but I like the presentation of x-bench with the music and colourful background. There's an old video tutorial of setting up x-bench on my channel if you're interested.

I've been fighting is corner since I got mine. Even remember bringing friends round to point out that my CD32 can do FMV just like their fancy Playstations. That was usually the Microcosm intro I would show off but if they asked to play the game I just made excuses and turned it off 😅

With so many caps on a single board, I like to dot a replaced cap with a sharpie to keep track of which caps are new.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
I did think about doing that but I counted all the old caps when finished, there were 29 of those and 29 on the board so fairly confident I got them all 😉

The dual through hole/SMT pads on those caps by the control board connector saved my bacon when a pad lifted (but use a low profile cap or lay it flat, since the shield is extra low at that point) BTW, I also use the CD32 PSU on my 1581
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Commodore to the rescue but I do wonder why they laid the board out like this. I didn't know it was the same PSU on the 1581 but makes sense I suppose to just use the same brick if they can.

You know as I keep exploring and discovering all the various vintage systems my wishlist of things I wouldn't mind owning keeps getting longer. Some things I have been able to source and others are still on the list. One of the things still on the list is a CD32. There's just something really really nice about it and the TF expansion probably makes it the handiest Amiga. I really hope to find one but also acknowledge that I might have to spend hundreds of pounds (or thousands in my currency) to get one. Buying one spares and repairs is a bit out of my league at this point in time. Anyway, great recapping, Glen. Always nice to see Amigas. Happy New Year.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Its a minefield of interesting systems isn't it and there is always something else I'd like to add to the collection but as you say cost is a big factor. I'm lucky enough to have had this CD32 since it was new but I do think that buying one now is a big investment as they only ever seem to get more expensive. If you've got a 1200, one option might be to add a PCMCIA cd drive which will let you run most games I believe. I've got a PCMCIA drive that I've never really used, maybe I should test that theory at some point.
@weepingscorpion8739
@weepingscorpion8739 6 месяцев назад
@@CRG Oh, that is definitely also a possibility. I would have to check the prices but those might be a bit expensive too. I also don't know if the 1200 can use parallel CD-ROM drives but that'd surely be something worth checking out aswell. And well... something I wish I knew back then is that almost anything that ended up in bargain bins in the 80s abd 90s is now a collector's item. EDIT: As of May, I am the proud owner of a CD32. I now just need some kind of harddrive/accelerator solution. Tempted to go all out with an TF360.

Walking the capacitors out I don't think is the lazy way, in a lot of scenarios it's the safest way to avoid ripping out via's. Great video as always, I'm already looking forward to the next one. 🙂
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Maybe a poor choice of words on my part but I was more referring to not having to get the desoldering station out, warmed up then fight with it for 10 minutes to unblock the holes. Probably would have just ended up walking them out anyway 😅

Earlier last year, I had the caps replaced on my CD32 and the MPEG module. Never thought of the optical drive needing new caps. Something else I'll have to watch out for.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Yep, there aren't a lot of caps in there but its the same SMD parts that cause problems on the motherboard and your MPEG module so probably should be swapped at some point. Always wanted the MPEG module for my console. I remember seeing it in action back in the 90s playing Star Trek 6. That always seemed to be the film they would show off with any MPEG expansions for any system.

Yeah wouldn't be a bad idea to get it done. They are renowned for leaking and causing problems.
@OtterlyInsane

The C64 was still in production in / for Europe at the same time as the CD32, given Commodore was not in the best state financially they were probably looking to use up as many switches and PSUs from stock as possible as the C64 wound down
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Good point and it makes sense that they would do what they could to reduce costs.
@Jojo_F

Tip: Also new SMD capacitors will end with leakage over short or long. Better here is to use subminiature THT caps and bending the legs like SMD. They max, dry out, but don't end in leakage... ;) Also my experience, dont desolder the old ones. Better turn of them, so any damaged lines will tear off also, so you can fix it in correct way. If not, the defective lines could lead into new problems over time. Your mainboard was in really good condition, but at time most boards are in really desastrous condition now ... :( Have fun with your Amigas! :)

I'm trying to replace the through hole capacitors with surface mount ones, as a replacement one I got with a kit blew. Annoyingly when removing the cap, the 470uF one, I pulled the right-hand side pad out. I was wondering what the diameter of the ones that were used in the video was, or even where to get them. I am looking at the Mouser website, but it's a bit of a minefield to my poor little brain :)

On both of mine CD32 they ben on backwards. I got one with the TF300 and use a A3000 Keyboard and mouse. The Ultimate Amiga in my mind.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
It is a great machine. Out of interest do your consoles have the same ribbon connector for the cd drive as this one has? I didn't cover this in the video but my CD32 has a different push to fit type connector so it must be a different revision PCB on which they presumably fixed the silkscreen at those caps.

People of RU-vid in the retro community - PLEASE stop using "VT" series electrolytic SMDs or Wurth Elekronik capacitors. These are junk and should be avoided... If you need good SMD caps, Nichicon, Rubycon, and UCC have 3000/5000/7000 hour endurance series that are far superior to what you're putting into your gear. Wurth Elektronic (the red caps everyone seems so use) are German re-brands of Taiwanese (read: 2nd tier) capacitors. Wurth won't even say who they get them from. Probably cheapo Teapo.
@CRG
@CRG 6 месяцев назад
Going forward I will give people a clear choice of their replacement capacitors. I take your points onboard but I'm sure these replacements, even if at the lower end of the market are still better than those fitted originally which came from the time of the SMD cap plague.
