About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

I just want to say that out of all the gardening shows I watch here on RU-vid I really appreciate the two of you the most. Your explanations of how things work and why you plant the variety you plant and even your explanation of the proper way to plant is just so pure and clear and so easy to understand. I am moving from North-Central Colorado to Central Ohio in just a few weeks (My husband moved at the beginning of February) and I am really excited to get my large garden going. My wonderful husband planted our starts in the basement of our 100-year-old home a couple of weeks ago and our landlord has agreed to allow us any size garden on the 1.75-acre property. So excited and want to thank the two of you so much for all I have learned from you in the past year. Blessing to you both.

Hi Doug and Stacy! Planting onions around the borders of beds is a good idea I think. I am going to do that this year! I don't have a favorite onion but found the Spanish (white) onions don't store well. So I don't grow as many white onions. I grow Russet (white), red and yellow potatoes. I have never had a blue potato that I liked. My favorite (as of now) is the Yukon gold but I have not started trying different varieties yet. Going to start that next year I think. Instead of hilling up potatoes, I mulch them heavily with meadow clippings. (Straw might be better) It attracts thousands of worms that keep the soil loose and come harvest time, it is very easy to dig them with just my hands.

@@TrollHiddenCave......Just take a look at society today....go ahead! Look at how the stores emptied out recently. We’ve allowed ourselves to become dependent slaves to the political prostitutes and their buddies, the corporations, bankers, etc. at least the Amish knew when to quit.....before losing ones freedom to be self-sufficient, and their own way of living that they want. Technology has gone too far....when your computer, phone, appliances, t.v., can all listen to you and watch you.....yeah....the Amish knew what they were doing when they said that having electricity in their home was bad, and would lead to bad things. Stupid? Stifle oneself from growth? Lol! I think society as a whole is beyond stupid to be wearing a mask for the REGULAR SEASONAL FLU, and is so full of themselves and their own sense of ‘intelligence’, that they ‘stifle’ themselves from learning and growing about the things that are really most important.

I have a few Yukons growing but they are for seed to grow a late crop. I have limited space here in town and I'm lucky that I can get in 2 or 3 crops per year. Doug, Stacey, We put our onion sets in Nov/Dec last year to overwinter on the top, like you and under fleece until they set roots. They are just beginning to wake up now. We did the same with garlic and shallots. They are well on and will be ready in June. All were varieties that will specifically overwinter in our Scottish climate. So far so good. This will be our first full year on our allotment. We are growing both red and white onions, round and pointed shallots, purple and white garlic. They are mainly under the fruit trees and between the raspberry canes. Tomorrow, I hope to do the radishes and carrots together like you. Potatoes, maris piper, maris peer, charlotte, king edward and red duke of york. Too many, an offer! I will sprout them and give some away. These wont go in for a couple of weeks yet. Regards Stephen.

Doug, Stacey, It's only a small plot, about 100m2 and 50% of it was roses, brush and elder. It's mostly all down now and in April I'm hoping to get the wild bit low enough to cover with membrane for no dig. I'll get squash and pumpkins off it summer / autumn. I have left some elder for the fruit, but I can only go near it after the first frost for berries. Flowers for Champagne require a full cover up p2 mask, barrier cream!!!! Not pretty. I can drink the product😀. Just like to say that I'm getting a lot of motivation from you both to "crack on!" As we say in the UK. More power to you both. Regards Stephen.

Thank you for the video! I'm so excited to be growing onions and potatoes for the first time this year. Question: Stacy, you mentioned you line most of your beds with onions as a good companion plant. Do you keep them out of your potato beds? I was planning on lining the perimeter of my potato beds with onions and then I read some conflicting info about them stunting the growth of potatoes so I've planted them elsewhere so far. But thought I'd ask if you have experience with that - thanks again!

Nice video! If you soak the roots of the onionbulbs a few hours in water before planting them, they will root even faster. This is the case for most other bulbs, too!
@angelinadegelder7722
@angelinadegelder7722 Год назад
Pardon my ignorance :) But do you soak the whole bulb?
@femkeborcheld56
@femkeborcheld56 Год назад
@@angelinadegelder7722 No, just the bottom, the part where the roots will be growing. But when you've got seeds, they have to be soaked entirely for about six hours.

@@femkeborcheld56 I'm trying to picture how you would soak just the roots. Say you have 24 bulbs ~ do you use 24 glasses or something so the whole thing doesn't get soaked?
@femkeborcheld56
@femkeborcheld56 Год назад
Both are possible. Mostly a very small part of the bulb is also in the water, but not too much, this is to prevent rotting. With very small bulbs I use a serving tray with a layer of water.

Nugget! It's not just coincidence that the transplants store longer. :) onions are biannual plants. So they dont flower or seed untill the second year. The transplants are 1st year onions. Sets have already gone threw a season so they are second year. Meaning as the onions grows the center will develop the flower stock. ( that green part you see inside some times) that flower stock will rot the onion from the inside out, thuse making storage not so easy. Also just want to point out. At the 6:20 mark TOTALLY enjoying Maggie playing with the cats in the background l

My experience with potatoes is that the new potatoes grow between the seed potato and the exposed top of the plant so mounding when the plant grows seems to work best. I try to give my plants about 10-12 inches of space between the seed potato the exposed green part of the plant. this allows for lots of room

Hey guys! Good morning!!! I planted onion sets yesterday. Along with spinach, lettuce, kale and beets. I worked my soil in my new raised beds, breaking up as much clumps as possible. Thank you for all you have taught me. I didn’t plant potatoes, but do have sweet potato slips doing well. WHEN WILL YOU PLANT YOUR SLIPS? Have a wonderful week!!!!
