Use silicone on the rubber gasket to keep it from drying out. Add desiccant packet and you'll be safe to store your ammo for decades with no worries.

Thank you! I have been saying the same for years: Clean the can, use silicon grease on the seal, and finally a couple of packs of some quality dessicant. Ammo is an INVESTMENT! PROTECT IT PLEASE!

I clean mine inside and out with Remoil. Silicone on the gasket desiccant is a must. I'm also a nerd and a collector of vintage cans, so I want to preserve them for another 80 years for nerds to enjoy.

That 3-in-One Silicone contains "Petroleum Distillates"! Use only Silicone on your seals and nothing that contain Petroleum Distillates.

WD-40 No, Silicone on the seal yes..

WD-40 works well on the exterior. Cleans up the metal and keeps it from rusting.
@PitbullSoco

@FlyingKSports no, it doesn't. Wd-40 does in fact dry. You'd be better off with a silicone cloth like you would for wiping a fire arm down for storage
@aahhronismyname8068
@aahhronismyname8068 Месяц назад
Any grease that doesnt contain petroleum will work on gaskets. Auto gaskets sealer ; atv, etc. Works too. Don't need wd40 cause it'll wear off eventually. Just spray paint a couple coats after ammo is inside. But great info none the less

While they dont look as cool, I prefer the modern, air-tight plastic ammo cans.. which likely have a better seal & longevity. (And also weigh less) And they sell reusable silica packets & cartons for ammo storage. I have some that turn blue to indicate how much moisture there is.. and iirc you put'm in the oven to remove moisture & make them white/clear again.

I have a few of the plastic ones. They are definitely lighter!
@Nords555
@Nords555 6 месяцев назад
Plastic will never be truly airtight. It shatters in the cold, cannot handle much weight, and is not as durable as metal cans (can be had at walmart for $13). Plastic simply cannot seal the top gasket. Try it, fill a tub with water, put some weight in the plastic can, and lift it out of the water a time or two, the lid will flex and allow air and water to enter.

There was a video here on the tube awhile back that compared the 2. To test the watertight seal each were put in a pool filled with gravel for a set amount of time. At a certain depth the weight of the water around the plastic one deformed the sides breaking the seal allowing in the water. Obviously not to many of us are going to store them underwater. Though bc the mil surp can was still bone dry. I would trust its seal and rigidity more under harsh use. The light plastic ones are nice if you don't ask to much of them.

The can was ready for long term storage even without all these steps. I've seen cans from the 80s in perfect condition

Thank you for this!!! Very wise!! Love your videos Sir! If you didn’t already, can you make a video on how to clean a AR-15 and a shotgun?? I’m seeing videos online that I’m iffy about.. your videos have been very helpful!! Do you recommend steel cans from anywhere or specifically from an army surplus store?
@FlyingKSports
@FlyingKSports 6 месяцев назад
Thank you very much for the compliments. I like the steel cans personally. It’s what the military has been using for years. Hardware store ammo cans are usually made in China. I’m planning on an AR video soon.

How long should we let the silicone dry? And where can I find the one you use?
@FlyingKSports
@FlyingKSports 6 месяцев назад
Silicone for the most part is inert. You don’t need to let it dry. You can find silicone at HomeDepot right next to the 3 in 1 oil.

Put a silica packet inside to absorb any moisture that might possibly get in there

They actually sell reusable silica packets & cartons for ammo storage. I have some that turn blue to indicate how much moisture there is.. and iirc you put'm in the oven to remove moisture & make them white/clear again. You should use Ballistol instead. Because im biased and i say so. Its good stuff. Also i asked Chat GPT because im not an expert on oils and everyone seems to be flipping out. Their concerns are unfounded. Firstly, no penetrating oil of any kind is going to have the snowballs chance in hell of damaging your ammunition unless you had the little straw attached for more precision and you squirted that bitch right into the primer pocket of your ammo. Secondly, the data on whether or not it could damage the outside of your can seems a LITTLE inconclusive but overall GPT seems to think its pretty fine and that there shouldnt be any issues. But seriously though, ballistol is better. 1: Its explicitly made with guns in mind, WD-40 isnt. 2: Its the "do everything" product just like WD-40 and duct tape. It does anything you could want it to. Firearms related.

I like to use WD-40 for what it’s good for. And that’s rust prevention. Sucks as a lubricant.
