Got my HRD late 98 or early 99. Many show. Only last week exhibiting bad tube symptomology. Well traveled, worthy beast and honored warrior. No mods, no complaints. Thanks.

I put a NOS Mullard CV4024 (12AT7) in the V1 slot and it totally transformed the amp. I have considered putting a 12AY7 in V1, which would reduce the gain even more, but the amp just sounds so sweet with the Mullard. Good video, I will check out the reverb mod too!

Very cool!!! I also heard of people replacing the second preamp tube in a fender hot rod with a 12AU7, to smooth out the reverb. Never tried it, but could be a simpler way to tame the wild fender 'verb sound

I had exactly the same problem with mine a few years ago, it would splutter and pop whenever I played an E chord. I sent it to a tech and he confirmed it as dry solder joint on a capacitor...

That ECC81 tune is the same as a 12 AT7A it’s going to start having the same trouble again eventually. The George Benson Amp is slightly different to accommodate for running a lower gain preamp tube.

You can fix the volume by putting in a 1meg audio taper pot. If I bought a new one I'd modify and fix all the silly problems that all the hot rods have.

I did this mod along with a speaker change. Want a difference. It does make this beast to a useable amp. Nice tones!

you can put an equalizer pedal into the fx loop and use it as a master volume. You can cook the tubes and use the volume of the eq as the master volume. Allows you to control that beastly volume spike.

Cooking the preamp tubes won’t get you a huge difference. You want to drive the power tubes.

j.d. r. Yeh that’s incorrect. You want to push the front end of your amp. The preamp. That’s what a tubescreamer does and that’s why so many people use them. On older Marshall amps they don’t have a “gain” knob they have a “preamp” knob. That is your gain. Drive the preamp get more gain. Not sure where you’re getting your info dude.

12AY7 in V1 lowers the gain in the preamp, makes it a little sweeter, gives a touch more compression, lowers the noise floor (if you get nice one) and adds some nice overtones. A 12AT7 for the Phase inverter (V3) helps the volume out big time, gives it a more consistent (and less flubby) response. Plus, it's a workhorse of a preamp tube doing a workhorse job. SRV did it to his Bassman, he also used a 5751 in V2 I think (not sure why), and used KT66's in stead of 6L6's

Be careful: 12AY7 in V1 is not a good idea for the long life of the amp, the circuit is not designer for that one. Try something with less gain on V3, and use a simple volume box on the effect loop to have a master volume on the clean channel

@@kimhansen6384 take a look at hotroddiy.com/ The Hotrod is not a "clean" amp, the circuit is designed to sound like it sonds... Hot and loud! And above all: stay calm and use the tubes you want! "... complete BS" ... a little exaggerated for a topic of no relevance! Study, experiment with tubes and have fun!

Recently purchased a brand new hot rod deluxe iii and I have fitted an RFT ECC81 NOS valve (as shown in your video). It has tamed the volume control and sounds great, however when I switch to channel 2 on the amp is making a terrible humming noise.... has anyone else had this problem ? Have I gone and fitted a knackered valve,can anyone give me some sound advice.

replace the volume pot with an audio pot replacing the linear pot they come with !

The US made ones have the proper pots and a pretty good drive channel as well!

Replace V2 with a 12DW7. The stage pushing the clean channel is like the 12AX7. The stage pushing the drive channel has much less output and make the drive and overdrive channels very useful. I rarely use the clean channel anymore.

Any more details on the bad solder job? Mine does the exact same thing when I hit an 'A' note. There are no amp techs where I live.

I'm also having this issue. I'm sure it's bad solder somewhere. I wonder if there's a particular place where these things all fail

open it up drain the caps then look for cold solder joints or breaks if you cant find one turn the amp on and with a wood stick poke around keeping only one hand in untile you find the problem just remember it has high voltage and can kill you ! once found reflow the solder after draining the caps .

Hi do you have the amp serviced and maintained also doesn't the cost of valve amps kind of put you off as opposed to solid state amps?

Hi yankeydoodle101. Basically No. Personally there is nothing better then a guitar plugged directly into a valve amp, and I am happy to pay to maintain that sound. I do enjoy solid state gear, sometimes, for practice purposes. However, personally there is nothing better than a Fender guitar into a Fender Amp, but saying that, if I had the money I would buy a Kemper tomorrow. Thanks so much for watching.

yankeydoodle101...there really is no comparison. I played through solid state for years then one day bought a nice tube amp (hot rod deluxe). I could not believe the difference. There is no comparison. Worth every penny.

The problem with getting information from Phil McKnight is it's the poorly informed learning from the ill informed. McKnight gave you a gain solution for a volume problem. The Blues Deluxe does not have a surplus of gain. It has a difficulty controlling its volume. The solution does not require a reduction in gain which limits your tonal options. It simply requires an audio taper potentiometer in place of the linear pots in both the volume and master positions. This just makes the volume change in a more gradual way as you turn the knob. No need to limit what the amp can do.

Twice was seen on the side of a hill side, and I just gufford at the situation. Anyway back to the point, Lovely to meet your wife the other day, I found her shawl was lovely.
