Ampification and liquefaction of buildings on different bedrock.
Addresses the question, "How will 3 buildings, engineered equally, on different bedrock react to an earthquake? "
Highly generalized animation reflects the arrivals of P, S, and surface waves to 3 closely spaced buildings. Exaggerated movement of the buildings reflects the relative motion recorded by the seismograms. The 4th building on the beach shows the effect of liquefaction of underlying sediment. Animation ends with actual seismograms from buildings on solid bedrock and sediment fill equal distance from the 1989 Loma Prieta M7 earthquake.

Graphically describes San Francisco perfectly...Bedrock hills of the center of town leading to vast areas of reclaimed Bay and filled in wetlands of downtown and the growing South of Market and Mission Bay development.

my question is, how does one find solid bedrock? is it simply a matter of being farther away from the beach or bodies of water?

You drill. Jk idk. But I would assume anywhere where there is solid bedrock would be able to be detected by some kind of instrument that's used for GPR(ground-penetrating radar). The underground layers beneath the surface would depend on what kind of material it is working with.

How does amplification occurs? Doesn't that contradict with the conservation of energy. If wave amplitude represents how much energy it carries. Then how come a different medium will cause an increase in the amplitude which means an increase in energy

because when the waves travels through looser ground or soil, they will slowed down, and in turn, there will increase in amplitude to carry the same energy.

@@agnidawala8180 sorry for the naive question but is the carried energy of a mechanical wave is a function of wave speed ? I thought it is only a function of the amplitude

@@stooncol619 the energy flux is constant, when the waves travels through dense rock, we get a high speed wave but a very less wave height to maintain a particular value of energy flux. But in the loose soil where the soil particle is more sparse, the wave propagation will get slower and the wave height gets higher. An earthquake is simply a wave that carries energy, which travel though ground or soil. The speed of the wave travels, hence, depends on the soil characteristic it goes through.
