Among the great composers in India, Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma of Travancore holds an extremely unique and special position. He was and remains one of the few who mastered both the South Indian as well as the North Indian traditions of classical music and who went on to compose exquisite songs in both styles. Despite having physically lived in South India two hundred years ago,, he let his mind and spirit wander all the way to the Vishveshvar Temple in Varanasi! The result was this beautiful composition that describes Kaasi so vividly.
