Around the 11' the boy that you found cute is Genoese like me. You can tell by the genoa shield sewn on the sweatpants. I'm pretty sure he knows English from walking around amsterdam without looking like a tourist but I'm equally sure he didn't hear a word of your dialogue as he seems already in another conversation :)

What were the dates of your trip to Amsterdam and Brussels? (And did you try any of the famous sprouts?)

We were there from March 18-24! And no none of the sprouts but we did have some Belgian waffles!

We did the same trip in October. But just did a day trip to brussels from Amsterdam. Mini europe in Brussels is worth going to if you go back..and the dog peeing statue

Brussel's 'grote plein' is beautiful indeed! The old architecture is partly from the times before the 17th century when the Netherlands weren't yet divided into the Dutch republic and what is now Belgium. Most Belgian still speak Dutch ( the same dictionary, yet they have more or less a french accent ((flemmish))in the way they speak) B.t.w. since more or less 75 years french has taken over flemmish (Dutch)in Brussels despite Brussels is surrounded by the Dutch- speaking part. Flemmish nationalists want to join The Netherlands (or Holland if you want) again,but the two countries really have grown apart all those ages..... Nice vlog you made ! 🌹

Most of the buildings on the Grand Place date from 1695 or later because in that year the French bombarded the city and flattened what had been standing there previously. The city hall is older and the French used its large tower to aim their artillery.

@@flitsertheo the city-hall is older indeed and and a few houses from the 15 hundreds have been altered and even newly built in 19th-century neo architecture, apart from 17th century houses. Yet I think it is a stunning place and very, very beautiful !

I used to live in Brussels. One tale about the grand place or grote markt I heard once. It holds the formula to the "stone of the wise". Which is the chemical process medieval alchemists looked for to turn led into gold. A process believed to have 7 stages. 7? Well there is 7 streets dividing the square in 7 blocks (the stages) of buildings (the substages). So the formula is somewhere hidden in the facades of these houses.

@@sarahjeanne one more then: in the 19th century you could find famous French writers in the cafes of the square, like Victor Hugo and Beaudelaire. Belgium as a new liberal country was a safe haven for revolutionaires that got into trouble in their country. Karl Marx lived some years around the corner for that reason. And wrote the Communist manifest in one of the pubs of the market.

@@sarahjeanne I went to school in Ghent and our 11th grade dutch teacher basically took us out for an entire day to walk around the city and talk about all sorts of obscure stories, historical happenings, myths, etc. We ended that day drinking a beer on top of a library that used to be a train station and all that. Probably one of the best days out from school and we didn't even need a buss.

@@sarahjeanne Dutch people have the highest english speaking efficientcy in the world for a non-english speaking country btw. The guys could understand every word. You've to get a english grade in middle school and all through highschool to advance to the next year. Universities also teach predominantly in english in the Netherlands. My grandma of 86 can speak perfect english. You probably noticed older people speaking english in the Netherlands. That's not very common in foreign countries. About 90% of the Dutch people knows english.

So they put them in the houses. Many years later it became a redlight district. A fact the catholic church likes to forget.

You should pay us another visit now that masks and Covid tests are gone. Did you get trough American Customs with the cheese ? Dairy products are normally forbidden for import. You missed the peeing dog statue in Brussels. It's a "Zinneke" (=bastard dog but also a nickname for Brussels natives). The peeing boy is also a symbol for the I-do-as-I-please attitude of Brussels people.

I would love to come back!! I’m definitely in love with Brussels and Amsterdam and would always love to explore more. And yes I got home with the cheese! Just put it in my backpack and it was no problem :)
