Hahaha! Maybe I should have mixed that in somewhere... Agree with the second thing too. A lot of people would just not even try. Given the same circumstances and equipment I doubt I would have done better. Wish I had taken pics of my first attempt to remove memory from a Spectrum. It wasn't pretty!

Nice laborious repair! I can sympathise with Simon, when I was a kid there was no internet to teach me about soldering techniques. I didn't know about flux or keeping the tip of the iron clean. My solder did not flow so I thought it was because the iron was not hot enough. I kept a cable tie on my dual-wattage Philips iron so the 50W "boost" was always engaged. I was burning everything to ashes and I couldn't understand why :) Well done for restoring it - weird that Noel's diagnostic reported bad RAM!

Unregulated iron and lead-free solder? Ouch, that was probably a really frustrating experience. Hopefully this failure won't discourage Simon from tinkering with electronics in the future. Great repair as usual!

Certainly a case of "fixing it until its broken". One of the most vital things you learn after soldering for a while is to know when you are making a complete mess of it and to stop before you totally ruin it. i.e. not having the right tip, solder, flux etc for the job at hand but going for it anyways because you can't wait, messing it up but continuing because you're sure it can't get any worse. And don't use the cheapest solder (leaded or not) and iron you can get your hands on and have at it.

100% Recognising when the problem is you and being strong enough to walk away is something that I've struggled with myself. Being in a rush, or being too tired usually sees me making stupid mistakes.

Great video! As you said, we all have to start somewhere. I would have probably destroyed the whole thing! I once soldered a molex connector on a Speccy toastrack the wrong way round - thankfully nothing happened to the machine but the keyboard didn't work.. Keep up the good work.

Ah, heady days of me trying to remove the pair of 2114 RAM chips in my first Vectrex in 2000 also using an unregulated iron. That went as well as you'd expect so I went and bought an Antex solder station which I only retired a couple of years ago. Replaced all the ruined traces with Kynar and that machine is still working today. Basically what I'm saying is 'Simon, don't give up.'

We've all got that project of shame in our past. Mine was an issue 3 spectrum. I decided to take all the lower memory out using a cheap desoldering hand pump. It was carnage. In the end I managed to repair my efforts, but the next thing I bought was the duratool desoldering station and I've never looked back. Simon learned a lot since then and happily works on his projects in a much safer fashion 😁

You're right that we've all had to start somewhere and very few of us became competent in a flash. I've destroyed and damaged stuff through carelessness or being out of my depth. Good advice that you never, ever begin or practice on anything of value - always start with scrap. Also important is to get advice before working on stuff if you're a novice - doing so would've prevented much of this outcome: as would recognising that things are going badly and realising that you have to stop. An excellent repair and clean up by you. 🙂

As long as this board is his, he can do whatever he wants with it. This is what makes these board end up at channels like yours. My first attempt repairing a retro machine was much more decent (probably due to better tools) but still it ended up to a specialist" bench for repair due to an invisible short-circuit

A great fix! I went the other way and did a 6128+ with a cassette mod. That way the cassette deck can have a counter.

Imagine if they hadn't released it with a tape deck and then people complained that they couldn't play the CPC's huge library of dirt cheap tape games? Having said that, Amstrad should've just gone with the 6128+ as the sole CPC model and included the option to load in tape games from a portable recorder.

I paid good money replacing the tape drive in a work computer around 2017 to 2019 AFAIR. Ok, it was for a fairly modern half inch tape.

YES! HUUUUGE! I have all my other machines stored in Really Useful Boxes. Even the Amiga 500's fit nicely in those. But not a CPC464! That thing barely goes through the door to the workshop.

I’m certainly not going to criticize the original work - everyone has to start sometime and gain experience, and my first soldering attempts were pretty ugly, but for me the error was starting on something he cared about. My first soldering of retro-computer hardware was on replica cartridge pcbs I got from PCB Way. If I did a good job then i had a cartridge for an Atari 800, but if I messed one up and couldn’t desolder and repair my mistakes, I could throw it away knowing I hadn’t trashed something I cared about. Only once I had got the confidence in myself and my equipment on a couple of those did I touch vintage hardware.

This reminds me of my brother in law, trying to do some delicate solder work with a huge 200w iron and some horrible solder of unknown origin or alloy. He really gave himself the impression that electronics soldering is impossible.

I got a bad feelin about dis 😄 That IC puller served me well... ok maybe not well but it mostly worked for about a year before falling apart. I'm too lazy/tight to buy one of the fancy ones all the cool kids have. I was going to ask about the RAM tester as I have the same 1bit tester but the 4bit one could be handy for the later C64 boards. Then again, I'm yet to find a faulty 41464

Another great vid Lee. I’m sure you’ve said this a thousand times before but what is and where did you get your soldering iron from? I have a soldering station from Amazon and not convinced the temperatures on the dial bare any relation to the actual temp on the tip so want to replace

Alot of that horror looks like either cheap solder or just lead free solder in general. it is a nightmare to work with that stuff, especially so if you're inexperienced with soldering already. Forget buying solder from eBay or even Amazon - it will be cheap junk. My personal choice is Stannol HF32 0.7mm diameter. However Loctite/Multicore works very well too and you can get it fairly easily (from CPC in the UK)

Some time ago I was struggling to buy some leaded solder and took a punt on some from ebay. Immediate refund. It was like trying to solder with shiny plastic. I've got some decent quality unleaded that's barely acceptable, but that really needs a lot of heat and gallons of flux to even get a half decent joint. Just not worth the bother. I'll stick with my multicore-loctite

I for some strange reason bough a 464 plus here in Canada 10 years ago from a garage sale and never used it. I now know of the Burning rubber rom card I don't have. Now I need that, a RGB cable and 5v 3A PSU. I have a small problem, the cassette cover keeps on popping open for no apparent reason, maybe there is no cassette inside?

Often those crappy sockets fail. Only use gold pin sockets. The gold pinned sockets also let you see the legs under them once soldered in.

One thing you forgot to mention in your video, don't practice soldering on anything of valuable to you. I think your friends only mistake here was that he should've spent more time practicing on e-waste first before working on this valuable computer.

Having soldered with an unregulated iron for about 5 years I'm not sure what your point is? Works fine for me. Obviously if you cheap out on the flux and solder you'll have a rough time but, as they say, "a bad workman always blames his tools. Nowadays there's no choice but to use lead-free solder (Brexiteers can blame the EU if they like) but there are a wide range of lead-free solder melting points, some even lower than leaded solder.

That's a fair comment, however the iron I used was an Aliexpress special that went faulty with the temperature was all over the place, and instead of stopping what I was doing I kept going and made a pigs ear of the machine - something I've learnt from! I've since replaced it with a Hakko that has given me no issues.

I think I made the point clear that it was a combination of all the above. Yes you can use an unregulated iron, a good one won't be too hot or have a screwdriver for a tip, but it's not going to be as safe and easy to use as a temp controlled iron with a quality tip. There absolutely is a choice between unleaded and leaded solder. I've not had any problem buying good quality loctite branded 6040 solder. But in the end everyone's experience and skill level is different.
