So you've just bought a CPC 6128 from eBay or you've got your old one down from the loft... and you're sad to find disks aren't loading? DO NOT FEAR! The disk drive itself is a robust beast! It'll probably just need a replacement drive belt or a clean!
Here I show you how to service a 6128 disk drive replacing the drive belt and cleaning the drive head! IT WORKS! This is quite a long video but it shows you everything I did to carefully get in and do the job correctly! I may upload a short version of this video at a later date.
A big thank you to dataserve-retro.co.uk for all the necessary parts and detailed instructions! Also for a quick delivery!
You can get the kit here -

And full instructions I used can be viewed here -

I just retrieved my 6128 from storage and it has that exact problem, so this video is just the job. Cheers mate! P.S. Great music! Some familiar tunes in there, makes it all the more watchable.

Good Video, you can now get clear polyurethane drive belts that should last a very long time, lot better than rubber ones that perish over time

Hi xyhobe I own two Amstrad 6128 which are making a slight grinding noise when I attempt to load a disk, do you have any advise on what this can be? I'd like to sort the problem myself, I have no previous experience but want to learn could you possible help me out with some well needed advice or tips would be great. Many Thanks.

Nice video. Although in my 6128, all the drive power cables are each in different side, which gives you less space to work when the pcb is lifted.

Still have my 6128 from new... Only had two belt changes. Well modded for 3.5" disk access and handmade ROM board for ROM chips. Long before I ever owned a PC or Mac...

My 6128 Plus drive belt had both snapped and gunked up to the point it looked like someone had stuffed a liqourice allsort in the drive!

+Larry Bundy Jr Oh dear! Did you get it cleaned and sorted?

Xyphoe Eventually, but as I had never seen a 6128 drive before, I thought it was a rubber tyre thing around the drive motor at first, but it was like pulling off a half chewed sweet, nightmare getting it off my fingers. But poorly made rubber and capacitors seems to be a regular thing from that era. Even the rubber casing on my Gizmondo is going sticky.

+Larry Bundy Jr Urgh yea, coroded rubber is nasty. Remember Ashen's video about the Amstrad PDA600? :D

Xyphoe Yup, it's exactly like that! Well not a bad so far.

+Larry Bundy Jr I've got a Nikon lens hood from the 60's that's a fold up rubber thing and it's perfect. So, good rubber existed. They just cheaped out on the belts, or maybe it was the only type that could be that thin?

I use slim pliers for pulling those awkward white drive plugs from the PCB edge connectors.

+EgoShredder Remember to hold the connecting plug (it goes into) and be very gentle! It has been known to pull out the pins!

Yep I agree, just be slow and gentle and provide support to prevent damage etc. I've not done a CPC drive yet but I have done the identical Sinclair Spectrum +3 128K drive. I never pull on plug out by the wires either, I hate seeing people do this!

I came here to... um... compare the sound the drive makes while working with mine (just ot be sure it's the right pitch, whether I need some grease, etc.), but if I turned the volume up when you type "cat", you would just shout right into my ears :D
