This is one awesome kit! AMT really knocked the ball out of the park with this one. Built it back in the mid-1990s but never built it stock as it just lent itself to customization. I kept the chassis for several years too after discarding the body following two repaints and the paint stripping that went along with that.
For sure will have to add one of them to our stash my dad worked for union 76 he was a tanker driver though then retired from there so definitely get one of them for a build
Hey Chris. thanks for the build. Mine had a warped frame so I used a heat gun to warm it up enough to straighten it. I did a lot more detail in the engine and compartment. All in all, a really fun build. I've learned a bunch from you. Thanks
I have the Texaco version of this kit, that I’ll be building as a green & black Texaco truck. I’ll be giving it to a local shop I go to. It was a full service Texaco station until ‘85. They’ve been there since 1957. In the Fife Tacoma area of Washington state.
This was great Chris, really enjoyed watching you go through the kit and build it. Came out beautiful and made me add this one to the wish list. Keep up the great work. Jeff
I just got done with my Texaco version, with that yellow & black push bumper decal & bumper. The only thing I didn’t like was the size of the kit tires, so I found some spare tires to put on it.
Love it. Could you show us how you do that silver washing technic? That's one of the thing I have 0 clue on how to do it and you do it pretty well. I loved that frame. I like the whole truck too.
Theystill sale these at Hoby Lobby; just got one last week to build. Just hoping to make it a stock red chevy (like those old red or cyan trucks you always see in fall themes or winter themes, etc.).
The only things I would do different would be to put an actual wood bumper on it. Same thing with the bed. I have some oak and maple stock just for jobs like that. I have done that before to a truck back in the mid 80's in High School. I love doing stuff like that. I think I will find that kit and do just that. Thanks for the video. Old Guys Rule!!
Nice review & a great job on your built up kit. I have the original issue of this kit & the Coca cola version & the Texaco version. I like the new optional side boards for the P/U bed included in this version. The decals look to be of a high quality. Thanks for sharing this.
Really nice build. Just went and picked this kit up and it looks as good as you said. Really solid kit. Thanks for the video. I’ve been sub’d for a while and will keep following. I watch it with my boys. Thanks again. “J”🇨🇦
I just resently bought this kit along with a 1965 Triumph GT 6 race car. I already had an open car trailer ( see where this is heading)? I do have a question when you mention using a pincel to do highlites or add color what type oh pincel are you using?
Thanks for the video Chris. Awesome truck. Turned out sweet. I tell you... Your reviews are the best. You always pick some cool kit subjects. I was hoping for a review on this kit and you always come thru. Keep up the great work! May I ask. What camera are you using to do your videos? If focuses very well on all the details. Thanks in advance
Thanks man! Camera is a Canon SX170IS . It wasn't very expensive but it has a tripod mount and films in HD and records in stereo with the press of one button so I'm happy with it. For still pics it has a crazy good zoom as well. It's getting older now and I'm looking for a new one. Hope I can find another good camera that works well.
Awesome job ,I like your version. I have the 2011 issue with the Texaco decals. how hard was it to put in the glass ,in mine it shows to put the glass in from the outside
After about 4 hours of drying I'll hit the paint with a model hobby heat gun normally used for applying airplane fabric (not a hairdryer) and warm up the body, I'd guess to about 170+ degrees and the paint just glosses over and smooths itself out like hot butter in a pan. Just keep an eye on small parts, braces or they will warp really fast. You can pull the gun away, let it cool, them hit it again if you want to try again. Then hit it with the cool air setting to harden it up. Let it sit a few hours and you are good. Doesn't work with all glosses, but it usually works well with the sprays I use.
Ha, if I can my hands on one of these, there will be a base model 57 Chevy with a straight six and a 1950 Chevy pickup with fuel-injected 283 race motor >:D
This version came out very nice!..I love your builds...unkle had a 50 when I was a kid, and that is where I lernt to drive stick...it was dark olive color, but cant find the factory std color..if you happen to know, please send a link..thanks!
Thanks! You should be able to google it and narrow it down. I don't have any links offhand but there are plenty of restoration places that point you to the correct color for each year of vehicle.
I just bought one of these kits yesterday and I watched your review a few more times just to make sure the frame in my kit was covered in flesh and a few other parts where to I never noticed it on yours could this be a bad shot or just not cleaning the molds? ?????
great tips, great information. (again) The engine compartment seems ideal for detailing - have any plans for Eduard or Detail Master sorts of additions?
I normally try to build the kits as they come from the box because they are being reviewed. When I add parts, some people don't pay attention when I say it's not included, they buy the kit and scream at the manufacturer that parts they saw on my review are 'missing' from their kit.
Hello Sir I'm sorry to bother you but I was wondering if you would do a tutorial on the dashboard of your next Auto or truck using a silver pencil? Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan
This channel is great for seeing what you get in the box. Thanks for doing these videos. I just purchased the model and in doing some research, I am stunned on how correct this kit is. The only real faux pas' I have noticed are the windshield visor (no reinforcing bead was in the original . The bead is in the middle of the visor where the vee is formed) and yet here are pics of a restored one with it: www.lowrider.com/rides/trucks/1504-1950-chevrolet-3100/. The transmission is steel and they were not often painted and the distributor should be black as it was cast iron, not aluminum. Love the detail of this kit. Compared to many that I put together in the 60's, this thing is spot on. Here is the brochure from GM: www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm-heritage-archive/historical-brochures/chevrolet-trucks/1954-Chevrolet-Truck.pdf
It is. Since it all lines up easily you could forego gluing the bed and cab down and easily remove both to show off the frame. Just don't forget when you pick it up.
