Here's my complete build up of the USS Reliant model kit by AMT. This version of the kit re-released in 2024 is an improved version of the kit from the 1990's The kit is available at CultTVMan HObby shop www.culttvmanshop.com/PREORDE...
From the old kit to this one : I think Round 2 did a fantastic job.. It still has some issues, but nothing that can't be dealt with... You did a great job , I love it. 👍
Love your DIY templates/masks. I've thought about 3D printing similar templates for other kits, so good to know that I can get great results with them!
Very good work. And I learned a few new techniques. The Enterprise Refit I built did not have a light kit. So I used paint for the windows. And for the hull plates I used different shades of silver all hand painted. I spent a long time painting my ship. It turned out very nice, considering I made this model back in 1979, 1980. And I was new to building ships. I lost it with my house, and I miss it. When you walked in to my room it was the first thing you saw, hanging from the ceiling. I miss it very much. Thank you for the posting I might get another Refit and try the build again.
Excellent video. I started building the original Round 2 release a couple of years ago but went overboard with after market parts. Got sick of working on it so I set it aside and have yet to pick it back up. I appreciate the more simplistic techniques you used which still produced an excellent result. I have a second one which I’ve not started and I think I’ll keep it simple. Although I will do basic lighting and an after-market Green Strawberry shuttle bay. Now I guess I need to stop working on my current build and pick the Reliant back up.
Round2 need to retire this old kit & upscale their 1/1000 kit to this scale because it seems we're never going to get a 1/350 scale from them hopefully I'm wrong 🤞🏾
Great tip for the windows this is super helpful. I have this in my stash and wasn't aware that the windows were removed. Might I suggest the Tamiya drill kit (74041), its actually a fun build and perfect size / speed for plastic models
I'd love to see (or read) how masking and painting was done for the nacelle chiller grills (the half circles on the side of the nacelle) and the nacelle intercooler pieces at the front. The lines look very clean and I'd like to replicate that technique in the model, which I'm coincidentally building.
i going to be doing a 1/1000, and im not lighting it, but i have saved your video to use as reference. i especially want to emulate what you did on the nacelles, but with paint. as i said, no lighting.
I know you saaid this was a Reliant build but then I saw how off the windows were and thought to myself "There is no way this could be the Reliant with the windows like that...." Just kidding although I'm sure someone read my comment and was agreeing before they saw I was joking. Some people, eh! The paper model idea is BRILLIANT! I hope I can remember that when the time comes to build mine. The idae of the DIY masks is also fantastic. Great results.
I bought a resin shuttle bay for this ship (the original mould) and a hull correction kit so I can use it; unfortunately once assembled the weight of the resin broke the N-cells off. 🙁. I hope they improved the n-calls and pylons connected with this upgrade, so I can make the shuttle bay out of styrene instead.
just a thought on the windows, what if you filled the holes with clear epoxy or resin drops? seems like it would allow the light to pass and level the surface.
the fact that round 2 doesn't include any decals for the windows for this kit is a shocker, something should be included, i remember the early issue's of the kits where ever full azteking was included in box, Round 2 has really cheaped out on the decals whilst raising the price of their kits, i rarely buy their kits now, you should not have to go after market or scratch build for the basics .
I admit, I did not enjoy this kit. Now I'm a novice model builder, so I was getting really frustrated with the warp engines. They wouldn't stay on when I glued them! That and the colors for the suggested paint scheme seemed wrong. I bought the colors it suggested but the blue looked TOO blue, you know?
Agreed 💯 they're so cheap when I bought their new 1/1000 Voyager kit the detail on the side of the saucer is missing they gave you a decal instead 🤷♂️ I wish another company had the Star Trek license maybe Bandai
