For the first time, I actually got to ride the Surfliner the entire route to los angles from San Diego and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on a train
I’m going back to Colorado for the train rides in a couple weeks, I had finished school. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Trains are amazing. Quite a cool video.

This line has changed so much since my youth. From the change of power on these trains to the implementatiom of quiet zones and double tracking areas south of Laguna/Mission Viejo, its the same line yet so different at the same time. At least the K5LA's continue to be Amtrak's benchmark horn. Although the 90's K5LA's sounded far more superior.
@@DiscothecaImperialis keep in mind freight companies own a lot of amtrak rail corridors so its up to them to modernize the lines. I know Caltrain in northern california is electrifying their lines but they needed to get new trains for that. (more costs)
I like how surfliners look, all streamlined. The spoiler on the charger is ever so slightly shorter than the cars, so I'd like to see one paired up with a Gallery Car; I bet the spoiler would perfectly match the height of the car.
Great video Mike! I was pleasantly shocked to see the observation cars on the Surfliner when I last rode it, but realistically unless they are absolutely needed as cafe cars, they should be used on the LD routes without them like the Texas Eagle, etc.

Nope, LOSSAN has not leased a single P42 since 2020 and it’s likely they wont lease them again until they get more equipment from either another lease or from NorCal.

Looks like Amtrak borrowed three "California Surfliner" coaches (6460 unit series) from Amtrak California trains of Northern California (San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor trains). Coaches 6462 (Moss Beach), 6463 (Muir Beach), and 6465 (Moonstone Beach) are currently running Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains down in Southern California.
Man, I love the Surfliner! It’s the pride of SoCal! Went on it on August 8th from LA to SD. One of the greatest days of my life. Thank Mike, for this amazing video!
Great video of the Pacific Surfliners. I ride the Pacific Surfliners to & from Los Nageles & Oxnard when I’m home in Chula Vista on visits for up to a week. I alternate between Los Angeles & Oxnard every other visit home to Chula Vista.

@@CoasterFan2105 Okay, I totally thought it was filmed on the 6th of June since I was at commerce and I picked up a friend from there and I remember there was an ethanol train stopped and an outbound surfliner engineer just spammed the horn but didn't hold on it. Thanks for the reply Mike!
LOSSAN leases the Superliner cars for more capacity on sets. Originally the available Surfliner cars could only make 5 car sets, so Superliners are leased to add another car to make them all 6 cars.
Why American commuter trains or high density shortline trains prefer single cab diesel locomotives with control unit at the rear end instead of dualcabs made for exports? Locomotive pushing passenger trains not losing power and speed... is it possible or is it because the engine always run at much lower speeds so the 'pulling' and 'pushing' detour speed remains the same?
Dual cabs are more expensive and for the frequent back and forth of these trains it would take away a lot of time trying to run the locomotive to the other end of the train
North America isn’t the only place with Push Pull operations. Europe also has Push Pull, which is where the original technology actually originated. The purpose of push pull is to save time and fuel costs of having to turn the train around or having locomotives on both ends.
@@MESSIANDRONALDOGoATZ It's arriving in spring 2023. Idk if @CoasterFan2105 will go there this year as he says he'll come back when br line will be extended to Orlando. But who knows, maybe he MAY come to fl this year! He said in the Q&A video of this year that he hopes to return to the east coast some time this year. Hopefully he goes to FL on that trip.
The engineer controls from the cabcar, which is the car on the opposite end from the locomotive with a engineer’s compartment. The train isn’t going in reverse at top speed even though it looks like it. The cars are connected with MU cables to the locomotive, so the engineer is able to control the locomotive from the cabcar. This is the concept of push pull, which has been around since the age of steam, but it wasn’t too widespread until the 60’s. Today, many commuter operators use cabcars because of the efficiency of not having to physically turn around a train or have two engines on both sides, which saves fuel. CoasterFan has made a video about cabcars. That gives out a good explanation of cabcars.
