Westbound Sunset Limited Earl Morning Timeteo Canyon x 4, Colton, Bloomington Yard, Ontario, Alhambra, Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, Power Backs Out
Superb historical piece! I most appreciate that we see the interesting heritage lineup as well as the power up front. I rode the pre-Superliner Sunset in the Winter of 1979. In those days the train was comprised of mostly ex-Santa Fe High-levels except for the sleepers. However, because of a terrible Winter that year, the High-levels were needed elsewhere and our consist was single level heritage through and through. I rode in an ex-Santa Fe coach whose chairs had leg rests that pulled out of the seat like a drawer, if I remember correctly. There was both a diner and lunch counter car on the train as well as a nice lounge. The train was long and packed! I never went forward to see the sleepers, I was a college student in those days and never dreamed of going up there. The entire adventure was amazing. My friend and I did a circle tour of the United States using the USA Rail pass which cost $179! Lots of stories to tell from that trip!
Great shots of the Alhambra station area. Not long after this the Sunset Route was lowered into a trench, the station was abandoned, torched by vandals and subsequently demolished.
