Enjoy this train ride through the deserts of New Mexico. This unique route has been virtually unchanged in the last 100 years. From jointed rail, active semaphores, wood trestles, telegraph poles, water towers, and train stations. It is like riding in a time machine.
We had several slow orders on this day. This was due to copper thieves stealing the wires that run the semaphores which automatically drop the arm to stop. Later in the video we run at the maximum allowed speed on this line of 79 MPH.
Notice in the beginning the many vendors selling stuff at the train station. This tradition dates back to the early days, when the Native Americans would buy or sell from this same area. Many Native Americans still sell unique items to the people getting off or on the train. The train also passes through a Indian reservation where due to old superstitions photography is not allowed.

Watching your video, I think I learnt more about the US and its habitation, countryside and flora than I did in 2 years whilst studying your country for my 'A Level' geography exams while at school here in the UK!! Tom, keep 'em coming!

New Mexico is a very beautiful state but not often visited. It's a great place to go to get away from everything.

Hello TOM, I still remember some of the old SEMAPHORE CODES FROM BOY SCOUT DAYS,,BUT when you mentioned ‘copper thrives’ I could only smile,,as it was the same in JAMAICA BWI then, between KINGSTON & SPANISHTOWN, they stole copper wires for the telephone co, so they used ALUMINIUM,,same thing ,eventually , had to go to radiotelephone between those 2 stations some 15 miles , CHEERSVFROM NJ🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Excellent recording. I can't count the number of times I rode from Albuquerque to Las Vegas round trip in a day back in the '60's. One Saturday I made a cross-platform transfer from the Chief #19 to #17 (El Cap) at Las Vegas in two strides. Shoemaker canyon on the Mora River is one of the least photographer of the main line.

I travel from Baltimore to Los Angeles every couple of years and I only travel on Amtrak. The people you meet are pretty much very friendly and the staff is top notch. It takes three days (leave Baltimore around 2:00 pm on Saturday and arrive 7:30 Tuesday morning) but its a great time. Our country is beautiful and you can't see it on a plane. The only bad parts of the trip are the layovers in DC (like 3 hours) and Chicago (almost 6 hours) I highly recommend it if you have the three days extra to do it. Even if you go by train one way and fly home its well worth it. Round trip is about $450 plus if you want a room on the train its extra. I will be doing it again October 2023.

Yes. Not much to do there. That is also where the filmed the movie Red Dawn.

Las Vegas is a historic city. It predates the railroad by decades.

Good video. Have been on highways in that area over the years but never from Albuquerque to Raton on the RR. You did a good job on this. So far, liked the engines pulling the train around the curve up ahead and the part by the windows flashing here and there inside the train.

Was there an observation car on the rear of the train or did you have a remote controlled camera attached to last car? Enjoyed this trip👍✌️😊🙏🏼🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

There is a window on the door of the rear car where I filmed. Luckily for us it was clean which is a rarity.

@@travelingtom923The Santa Fe Railway used to run a 408 and 844 train over that line years ago. Did a lot of beer traffic for Coors. The Santa Fe Railway company runs from Lamy to Santa Fe and it used to be part of the Santa Fe Railway Co (BNSF)

@@NMjack2000 The Rail Runner unfortunately ran the Santa Fe Southern out of Santa Fe when they wanted the depot. It has been gone for many years. I have a video of that train ride here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gENCB40I_Yc.html
