Im currently sitting in a handicap room on the silver meteor. The difference between the newly remodeled and the old viewliner rooms is amazing...been on both in the last 45 days... luck of the draw for the new version today
I wish you could post a video or pictures because I saw a picture of the new Viewliner II and yes its upgrade and the separate shower is awesome to have in the accessible bedroom
Good video. To the people all freaked out about the shower/toilet combo, it's the same set up as in pretty much any camper or travel trail. It works fine and has never bothered me even on week long camping trips....and I'm 6'6! Love these trains though.
I went on an amtrak train from Penn station to Orlando Florida last year and I rode coach with my mom and my sister. It was nice, the attendants are very nice and helpful and when someone was listening to a dvd loudly in the middle of the night (Which is against the rules) within 5 minutes an attendant told them nicely the only way they could listen to the dvd was if they had headphones in. The food is good and I didn't have a problem with anyone else on the train.
Bah . Coach is the worst ... Like the greyhound of the train world . Drunks and smelly almost homeless ... I'll take sleeper car any day of the week ...
Took the City of New Orleans train. NO to Chicago. Very nice. Had a roomette and my wife and I were quite comfortable. Dinner in dinning car was good and next morning breakfast all included when you purchase roomette ticket. All in all a nice diversion from flying and at about the same price.
The rooms are great for swingers, I am surprised more people do not lobby the government in favour of Amtrak , Amtrak rooms are great for doing it, breakfast and dinner included in the price of a room. The Amtrak room's have access to a shower it is all good .Do it on the train , keep your plane.Have fun doing it , with the motion, it makes you feel like you are on the ocean.
Nothing to lobby for..... lol, our Federal Government has been subsidizing the Trains for as long as I can remember..... They'd have gone out of business in the mid90's w/o Government monies. I don't recall it being a profitable means of transportation & they've had to rely on help from the Government to offer the routes they still run. Having said that, I'd like to take a Midwestern to Pacific Coast run of some type that goes thru the Rocky Mountains. Either St. Louis to Nevada or Chicago to Wash. State/Oregon? Not sure what they offer but thru the Mountains would be a sight to see? peace
@@diggydice9041 passenger travel isnt a profitable revenue for railroads - it was always just a front for Freight operations. Considering Amtrak is solely a passenger operation, it needs those subsidies while freight operations remain the sole form for every railroad in the country.
@@TchaikovskyFDR ~ Yeah, they are heavily subsidized but I'm not so sure they provide enough of a service to justify costs? In the mid90's I saw them advertise for "Drivers" to load customers cars onto the train so they'd have their own car down in Florida. Greyhound Bus & the smaller State Buses connecting to Greyhound are subsidized as well but they are needed while I'm not so sure the Train is? But I'd been thinking about grabbing a train out of Dallas Texas to allow my mom to see the Rockies & beyond. It must be a beautiful trip & I'm still looking at going. thanks for the share. peace
@@diggydice9041 the service they provide is the presence of passenger rail service in the whole of the us of a. There would be no passenger service in the us if the govt both federal and state, stepped in.
Adding to the other comments to this posting: Even in Europe the passenger trains are subsidized by the Governments there. It is something that is needed for various reasons and the Government subsidy is worthwhile. I expect even more passenger train traffic in the coming years due to problems with the airlines (their profit or lack of) and global warming (most efficient passenger transportation in that arena are nuclear submarines ("really"!); coming in second are trains-much more used than submarines).
I had a roomette from Spartanburg, SC to New Orleans and when we got to Lake Pontchartrain there was no one in my car or the car next to me that had full rooms and they put me in one of those rooms and I got to see the Lake from both sides. It was like WOW... :)
Advice from someone who has traveled with Amtrak since I was 5 (21 now) If you are spending overnight on Amtrak Sleeping in coach is like sleeping on a plane. Very small & close corders with the other person. Good for a night but thats it. After that you will be worn & sleep deprived. If you are spending 2 or more night then get a room. Its worth it. Any more questions feel free to ask
@Masster Gunnz I think the average is like $500. And usually, the people you meet on the train make the time pass by kinda quick. Interesting people, and ya might run into a folk singer ;D
Took the train from Chicago to LA. We had the luxury first class sleeper as it was called in the 80s. It could sleep four and it was super fun! Small and compact but still quite the experience.
In some cases, it has been cheaper to get this room than to get a plane ticket. Savannah GA to Tampa FL is $380 roundtrip for 2 adults and this room....7hr trip. Airfare would be $420 at 5hrs. I have a 1year old...so I'll deal with the extra 2 hours if it means I have this much space, free WiFi, $40 cheaper, etc. haha.
Get the Amtrak Mastercard. My wife and I are taking the southwest chief from kansas city to Las Vegas and back in a bedroom for $0.00. We go every two years. Love it!
The BEST Amtrak bedroom video.. steady video, and complete narration, with good focus throughout.Although slightly different than a Superliner Bedroom, the difference are minor. A real upgrade from the Roomette, which provides privacy, and two berths.. but requires a LOT of agility and good nature of its occupants. After 30 years of roomettes, we now really need the ability to walk around, and the flexibility for one of us to lie down, and the other sit up, without having feet in our face ! The bedroom will give us that. If you get up to pee in the middle of the night.. having the bathroom right in the room.. means no dressing, or sliding the door, and less chance of waking your traveling companion. A shower.. whoopee ! Prices vary widely on a bedroom, depending on the train and the date. even a day or two can make a 200 dollar a day difference. I don't know why. East bound out of LA.. the Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited are joined.. but the room on the Sunset Limited is always hundreds cheaper on the same day. Again, who knows why ? Sometimes the room is a $100 upgrade from the Roomette.. and if you can afford it.. worth it for the comfort and convenience. Beds are bigger too !
Thanks! Very helpful video. It convinced me to upgrade from a Roomette to a Bedroom on the Crescent from DC to New Orleans. I’ll be proposing to my girlfriend on the trip. Wish me luck!
Looks good. We used the Capitol in 2006 and this cabin looks better equipped. Currently thinkiing of using Amtrak trains for a wide-ranging tour of the US, Trains to main destinations, to use each as a base. With rental cars. We have enjoyed the Akela a few times and the Capitol, once. Good on-board service.
@mommachilders I ate the food on the Crescent (another southbound running Amtrak train) recently and I agree with Mike; it's very good food, and very close to the quality of a fine restaurant. If you have a sleeper car, your food is comped in the dining car, except for alcohol and if you should choose to leave a tip for your server (which I will do if the service is good.)
A very nice review. However, not mentioned: the full length mirror, behind the single chair, is a sliding door that opens into the next room. Prior arrangements are necessary to unlock it. There was plenty hot water for the shower ( a surprise ).
Bob Perry I went for the first time from Cleveland to Sacramento last year in coach. Although I made due and was pretty fortunate to not have a 'neighbor' for most of my trip, I've resolved to reserve a bedroom to go to LA this year. I love the train!!!! Life-changing experience.
Excellent video, I could see myself buying one of these bedrooms for a one night trip on Amtrak as opposed to flying late at night or early in the morning, but I don't know if I'd survive a train trip for more than 24 hours. People travelling from coast to coast on Amtrak and are not doing so solely for adventurous reasons are insane, IMO. Thanks for posting this though, very informative.
I paid for this type of accommodation for my girlfriend and I when we traveled on a Southwest Chief train from Los Angeles to Chicago in the middle of August 2014. I wanted her to be comfortable since it was her first train ride. it is expensive considering the amount of space this type of compartment offers but it is comfortable.
Yea I saw from a floor plan that the family bedroom is at the end of the car and takes up both ends ! Thats pretty nice. But i've been in the viewliner bedroom before and we combined 2 rooms and it was pretty amazing
All the pricing is available on Amtrak's website...you just put in your starting point and destination and you get pricing for coach, roomette and full bedroom...Note the pricing for roomette and bedroom includes meals in the dining car and full access to the lounge car and cafe car. All bedrooms have showers and toilets in the room....in the roomettes it depends on the car type, viewliner roomettes have a sink and toilet, superliner cars don't, the toilets and showers are semi public..
The bedroom sleepers are great, been in one before. One thing to be aware of, the walls between these rooms are paper thin so if you have a family next to you with little kids, you'll hear them all during your trip.
Acela Express, Cascades, Capitol Corridor, Carolinian, Downeaster, Empire Service, Ethan Allen Express, Keystone, Lincoln Service, New Haven Springfield shuttle, Northeast Regional, Pacific Surfliner, San Joaquin, Vermonter. They all have wifi as do numerous stations. Don't expect the same speeds you would receive at home of course.
Ok I stand corrected. We just got back from a trip on the California Zephyr and had the family bedroom for 3 of us. 2 adults and a 14 yr old that's bigger than his parents. I would much rather have had this room. Basically just as big and with better amenities. Only advantage of the family room was windows on both sides of the train that ensured we didn't miss any views.
We took the California Zephyr to Chicago then hopped on the Cardinal to Baltimore. It was a round trip in first class bedrooms. I've uploaded vids if you want to take a look. Thanks for a great video!
Nice video but I recently traveled on the Amtrak City of New Orleans(April, 2013) from Chicago to New Orleans and back on two separate trains and both legs of the trip must have been on two of the oldest trains still running today. The roomettes on my trip had no sinks, toilets or nice lighting as you displayed. and they weren't the cleanest of trains. I must say however the staff were all outstanding which made the 19 hour trip bearable.
You were on a Superliner...those Roomettes don't have any of that. The single-level Viewliners run in the northeast, where tunnels are too low for the (2-level) Superliners. I rode in a Superliner roomette on the Auto Train last month...tiny, but well-lit and clean.
Trying to take a shower and not fall down hahaha. traveling with Amtrak as a couple is romantic in your 20s and maybe 30s, but you probably won't want to be crawling over eachother like that forever hahaha.
Actually this is the largest bedroom on the Viewliner. If you want something larger you can double these up to make a suite..but that of course is extremely expensive ! The family bedroom that the other person is talking about is only on the superliner and thats only made for 2 adults and 2 children
Thanks for the View. U think amtrak would make Videos like this. You need Quicktime to view it on their website. Hell no so i came here. The issue with Amtrak and Rail is the cost. If they were able to at least cut the prices in half you will have more rail traffic. This is the main reason people chose planes and cars. As far as i know the United States Gov't still bails out Amtrak.
Friends! It looks like a dream trip to take! Can anyone tell the fares? How much ca. is a ticket for such a trip - any distance for two? Would appreciate your advise.
Oh yes i have been in the sleeper car twice pretty fun unless ya get hurt by the bed in room the handle that ya move to make bed i was standing in the small room train jerk when it jerk my back of righr leg above heel hit the metal handle and it cut into my leg it bled bur got help fixing it up and banageing it up. That was june 16th it happen now i am back from train ride and leg is still sore some.
It's the same in small RVs and in alot of sailboats.. The toilet lid not seat but lid acts as a chair in the shower.. Also really easy to clean a wet bath.. (that's what they're called). And I guess if u want to get disgusting, you can technically shit and shower and shave at the same time!!! ... Lol...
Better than the Roomette. Somebody had the genius idea to put a toilet right next to the seat. That is NASTY! I'll spend the extra for the bedroom, where the toilet is separated from the rest.
Yes-meals (minimum, dinner and breakfast on overnight trains), coffee, and water are included. Snacks, sodas, and booze are available but must be purchased.
It looks a little cramped, especially in daytime seating mode. I think the Coach passengers axtually have better legroom; moreover, the bedroom seats can't recline at all. Also, i'm not too impressed with the window design on the Viewliner; I don't think the views look all that great. That said, the bedroom looks well-appointed, and as someone who tosses and turns in his sleep a lot, the safety harness for the upper bunch is a nice touch.
This is a bedroom. I know a lot of people think the roomette as a bedroom, as it is a room, but there is a difference. The roomette is basically a room with two seats. The bedroom has a "couch" as well as a seat, a bed, sink, shower/toilet, etc.
Visiting from Australia & travelling later in one of these rooms. Does the Viewliner bedroom supply towels/toiletries, please? Also, do they have hairdryers, please?
The gray straps you see at 2:20 are what they have. Might look a little not safe at first, but I slept in the top bunk just fine, my mother did as well with no problems.
No on the viewliner..that is the biggest. The best someone could do is combine these to make a suite. The room your referring to is only on Superliner trains...NOT the Viewliner. And that room only accommodates 2 adults and 2 children
Mano jaba singh Russaliah I don't believe Amtrak will allow you to do that, they will only allow two people per room, unless it is a family bedroom on a superliner.
Amtrak in Seattle employs very rude ticketing agents. Try going to a different station if you desperately have to take a train. It is much faster and sophisticated to fly. If you see an elderly female ticket agent, RUN!!!
I love Amtrak, but with all due respect, if I’m going to pay $870.00 for a view-liner bedroom plus my regular coach/first class ticket. I feel that the rooms should be much bigger and spacious with additional amenities. Just my opinion. The shower needs to be separated from the toilet. It’s almost looks like a prison cell. With the Infrastructure bill that President Biden is trying to pass, that should be included with the exterior and interior of the new Amtrak trains in the near future. Amtrak President needs to sit down and go to the drawing board on how to bring more customers to ridership to their trains across American. It starts with us a consumers/customers on what we would like to see add and design to Amtrak private view liner bedrooms and private view liner roomette etc.
