Amy Rose: OVERLOOKED Magnificence 

When Amy is kind, ambitious, fearless, compassionate or quick tempered it's flossed over and ignored. When other characters are those same things It's actual seen as their personality smh.

If they bring Amy back as a playable character, I'm up for it. She has so much potential. A blend of Sonic's level design with Tomb Raider's versatile acrobatics. I really miss the days when games had a lot to play around with.

I always found it fascinating how one of her character traits are Tarot cards.

I would love to see you do something like this for Rouge the bat, she is another character that is deeply misunderstood.

Yes , Amy is one of the few characters who didn't get doomed by new writers ( at least not a lot ) Tails , knuckles & Shadow are not the characters we knew and love ( for example Tails learned to be independent and how to be a hero which is a great character growth and that's why he is my favourite character but in games like sonic forces he was useless and it was obvious the writers didn't know the characters ) but Amy is Still a great character

Amy has always been my favourite character. And in all honesty, I've never overlooked her. She's an amazing character and all, I am glad that people are actually starting to like her and not just see her as a obsessive fangirl. Because she isn't, without her, Sonic games and Sonic in general like anything related to him, would be weird. She is NEEDED lol

I would argue she still has that air of compassion in SA2, most notably with her speech that motivates Shadow to help fight, acknowledging that while, yes, humanity fights amongst itself over the most trivial reasons, they have just as much of a right to fight for their wishes. Great video!

It's rare to see someone understand Amy this well. Nice work. Though I do have to disagree with IDW Amy being that good. Evan writes her well, but Ian seems to shy away from her girliness cuz he can't really write femininity.

Great stuff. Amy is my favourite character, and it's so great seeing her being appreciated. She is so important to the series, and you hit the nail on the head with her central characteristics - compassion, empathy, cheery, an optimistic outlook and all 'round just having a heart of gold... with just the occasional expression of love for Sonic. This is Amy Rose.

If I'm being honest, I never overlooked Amy but I am more than happy to see other people show their appreciation for the pink hedgehog. In other words, this video is amazing.

Amy is such a great character and you're right. Just like Knuckles, she has changed a bit a has become a bit bland. Sonic X is what made me love the character also. Then again, Sonic X made me love most of the characters in general lol. Awesome video as usual, Nick!

This doesn't delve too much into Amy's character or her progression. How can you talk about Amy's compassion and not talk about SA2. She's the one that helped Shadow remember Marias promise. I hate that they gave that role to Chris in Sonic X.

She's not even obsessed with Sonic in SA2. She makes a single joke about marrying Sonic. She wasn't being serious.

I still remember these core parts of Amy aside for her love for Sonic and that’s why she’s still among my favorite characters in the series. A shame she’s regarded as a super obsessed fan girl that only thinks about Sonic which the community seems to pin her as. She’s more than that. Which SEGA hasn’t really helped that much. Though the IDW comics seems to returning her old personality traits back.

Amy not having a mission in SA2 always made that game seem incomplete to me.

Really good video. Personally, my favorite interpretation of Amy's character is in Sonic Heroes. I've already made a long post on Tumblr about it before, so I'll give the short version here: One, she's very energetic and manages her can-do attitude throughout the game. She only gets discouraged at one point in Team Rose's story, but then immediately bounces back, and is ready to hunt down Eggman. Two, she's very brave. In CD, SA1, and SA2, she's shown to be afraid of Eggman, but this doesn't happen in Heroes. On the contrary, she doesn't seem scared of him at all. Even calling him names like "mustache monkey" and "bloated buffoon." She doesn't even seem too afraid of Metal Sonic. The robot that originally kidnapped her in CD to begin with. Three, she's a good leader. Compared to Cream and Big, Amy has much more experience adventuring and dealing with Eggman. Thus, it's only natural for her to take up the role of leader. This is where her bravery, can-do attitude, and compassion are really important. There are numerous points in Team Rose's story where Cream and Big are doubting themselves, and may even want to give up. However, Amy will not let that happen. She consistently encourages them, making sure they keep moving forward, as they have to save Froggy and Chocola. Four, in regards to her feelings for Sonic. I know that some would say Amy's feelings for Sonic seem too obsessive in this game, but I would argue that there's at least a good reason for that. On top of her love for him, Team Rose's only clue as to the whereabouts of Froggy and Chocola is a newspaper where Sonic has both of them. Thus, it's only natural for Amy and her team to try and find Sonic. Sure, could the interaction have been handled better, especially concerning the whole "marriage" thing? Of course. But I don't think that's enough to write off Amy's whole character in the game, which is something many people do. Amy has always been my favorite Sonic character, and it's really nice to see that more and more people are warming up to her as time goes on. However, it's unfortunate that she and pretty much every other Sonic character has been butchered to only having one or two personality traits. Amy is strong, loving, kind, courageous, and energetic. I really hope Sega and Sonic Team can get some better writers. Not just for her sake, but all of the other characters, as well.

Amy used to be my favourite character when i was a little kid. It was enlightening to see you delve into her character from an analysis sense.

Back in the day I didn't mind Amy in the past. Like whenever she was there it'd be "oh cool, there's Amy!" But since last year, she'd fast becoming a favorite, next to Sonic and Tails (though Tails is my favorite). Though for all she's barely used these days, I think its fair to say that ever since day one with the American release of Sonic CD, Amy's been fighting an up hill battle to be recognized for who she is. As seen in story write up for the American manual for her debut. Dammit, (Sega of) America, you had one job!

Amy is a sweet girl. She has loved Sonic ever since they met. He loves her too but he is nervous to admit his feelings.

Amy gets a lot of flak for her passion and love for sonic, but those are some of her defining traits and really shouldn't be stripped away. Rather, she should be more developed and 3-dimensional, rather than just a one-note character.

I hate the double standard people judge Amy by. She’s not the only character to have been flanderized and have bad writing. Pretty much most of the cast of SpongeBob were all bastardized and ruined and yet people still love them to this day. Knuckles was made to be dumb and fans don’t all think knuckles is dumb now. The problem has never been Amy as a character. It’s how they choose to write her. And honestly even at her worst she still had some redeemable qualities. She still helps and has even saved sonics life multiple times. She clearly doesn’t intend to be bad but unfortunately there was a period where sega stopped caring much about her character development and thought making her act crazy was funny at the expense of her character. Also she’s a cool character with a lot of different skills and potential. Amy Rose in my opinion with the proper character arc has the potential to be amazing and I’m holding out hope they are going to get her character right in this new sonic prime show.

It’s really nice that you made this video about Amy Rose, she’s my favorite non-Eggman character from this franchise. Admittedly I didn’t favor Amy much when I first saw her, but as I grew older, I start recognizing how amazing Amy is (it helped that I only managed to beat her story in Sonic Heroes back when I was a kid). She’s just as important to this Franchise as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman. Which is why I’m still hoping that she’ll be in the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie.

I'm shocked there wasn't a mention of Lisa Ortiz, who really helped define her character through Sonic X & the 4kids Era games. Additionally Amy had her hammer in Sonic the Fighters & was more than just a damsel in distress during the Classic Era. Many forget that her Classic Design was essentially a pink haired schoolgirl hedgehog as per Japanese concepts of cuteness back in the early 90s. Still you can't talk about Amy without bringing up her relation with Cream. While Amy's supposed to be the spunky, strong willed heroine, Cream is essentially the person who keeps her level headed. Cream while serving a similar dynamic with Amy that Tails does for Sonic, is also notable for her not liking to fight despite how strong & talented she is when it comes to combat. Amy's downfall in the 2010s was her voice acting which didn't fit with who Amy was as a character. Amy was supposed to be strong, spunky, & take charge in addition to girly & in love with Sonic as that was the character she was made to be during the 4kids Era. The 2010s made her a parody of herself by having her sound like Disney Character & keeping her from taking part in the actual fighting in the games as part of the Just Sonic mentality. I would recommend Cream getting a video next if she hasn't gotten it already.

The Piko Piko Queen herself. It's been a while since the last character analysis. Upon playing Sonic Battle, there's one small tidbit that I noticed from Amy. Just like Peach in Smash Bros, Amy uses her rear end as a fighting technique against her opponent. Perhaps that's another weakness Sonic has? It's certainly possible. Joking aside, Amy's my third favorite female Sonic character behind Blaze and Rouge. Amy's underrated and deserves more love.

As someone who's favorite characters are Tails and Amy I 100% agree. Amy is often overlooked by both Sega and fans, I agree she could be a better written character in instances. But honestly she is nowhere near as bad as the fanbase (especially Sonictuber/critcs) say. Her obsession with Sonic is literally the point of the character and how she's played around with the dynamic. Even in fan stuff she's often replaced by Shadow when it comes to any sort of fan speculations or media, and not gonna lie its annoying, because it disregards her as the 4th main character (which she is after the trio) she's also overlooked by Sonic Team by always being not included when it comes to things like Mania or the Movie sequel etc (yes those are other sources making them, but it does apply to her being overlooked) And while I love her characterization in IDW in the games she has been changed for the worst just like any other character, just taking away her love for Sonic doesn't make her a better character, she just became an idealized version of what the fans think she should be, in that even her other traits outside of loving Sonic were taken away, now she's just the bland token female character. And when it comes to Boom, just a generic action girl (I really dislike the way critics frame how a character has to be written, which amounts to their version of a good female character or when a character losing agency is seen as "damseled". As for her being a playable character I'm all up for it. I really thought she had potential they just never gave her. Heroes and Advance 2/3 showed signs of it, just never solidified it. I thought her gameplay in Advance 1 was perfect for 2D Sonic gameplay for instance, especially with some fine tuning (which Roms of the classic games featuring her classic design with that playstyle did) I think her Hammer should always be apart of her moveset, and not just remove it like most mods do. There's an added charm seeing her with her hammer combined with traditional Sonic speed/gameplay. She always became centered around the platforming aspect, considering how platform inspired her gameplay seemed to be, which is fine. 06 was the one exception however, Amy's gameplay is atrocious in that and doesn't work or fit the character at all. Why does she need to turn invisible? I think the Adventure titles and Shuffle did a great job at balancing Amy's love for Sonic while giving her own priorities. (In SA1 it was pinning for a sense of adventure that just happened to be tied to Sonic, not to mention the bird. In SA2 its about her being left out and her love for Sonic and marriage being used as an obvious joke. In Shuffle? She makes a wish to be a Hero like Sonic, meanwhile I think Heroes did a decent job at balancing her chasing Sonic, but she also has other characters to interact with. It makes me overlook it because she has that balance. Because she's helping Cream and Big find their friends and interacts with them it adds more to balance part of the character so that chasing Sonic is her main trait, just balanced by other traits. Not to mention she has nice snarky remarks at Eggman. Amy isn't obsessed with Sonic in Adventure 2, she was more concerned with being left out. And in Heroes that was basically te point, her seeing Sonic on the newpaper with a captured Chao and Froggy is what sets off Team Rose, keep in mind even the innocent Cream had no qualms with thinking Cheese's friend was with Sonic, while she obviously disagreed with Amy chasing Sonic of course. I also think that Amy's immature because she's a pre-teen, pre-teens (and by extension teenagers) do stupid things and minors will often vary in terms of maturity. I think IDW is the right direction for that. I find it odd how hardly anyone bats an eye when Boom Amy throws her temper on the main cast (often in ways similar to Amy, and its also contradicting given her other traits) which again, stems from the fact that because "she's mature" it somehow excuses her flaws even though I do like Amy in Sonic Boom her personality either amounts to generic action girl in the games and in the TV show is very inconsistent with the only consistent thing being that she's a feminist or a girl. And the way the love was done on the show was so typical, its just the "to shy to admit it" dynamic with no interesting spin on it. But again Boom and regular Amy are two different characters and I like them both, its just Boom Amy works for her series and that's it.

I love watching analysis videos that actually understand the depth of specific characters. Amy is one of the most detested characters in fandom history, but those that take time to see past the incarnations that butchered her personality will find so many layers to her. I very much agree with everything said in this video. Aside from her character though, I also think she could use an offensive upgrade. I've seen several times in media apart from the games that her Piko Piko Hammer isn't enough like Sonic X and both the Archie and IDW comic series. Namely against heavily armored Badniks. I think if their were to be an upgrade to that, it would be some sort of nail weapon that works in conjunction with her Piko Piko Hammer, allowing her to be more viable in combat. I've got a few ideas on how that'd work but anything can be on the table honestly.

I agree with you on Sonic Adventures depiction, though I had mixed feelings on Sonic X Amy. While she had good qualities, I thought she had anger issues and took out her anger in violence, which I'm not okay with. Sonic Adventure's Amy was assertive, but not violent. I think more modern iterations have done good at tempering her move violent side.

I've taken a lot of interest in the character of Amy to the point where I'm working on a somewhat similar video and I have to say: you bring up a lot of good points and in some ways approach this in a way I'd never have thought of. Your analysis of her temper was especially good because I usually hear Amy fans deride that as a negative trait that derailed the character but you, while pointing out that it can easily be used poorly, enjoy it because it can add a depth, authority, and leadership to her character that I hadn't considered. I especially like that interpretation because it makes for a good follow to her whole character arc from Sonic Adventure. She uses this trait of hers that could be childish in a way that makes her strong and demanding of respect. Great work overall, might be my favorite thing you've done so far.

I'm glad I found this video. I've been thinking about Amy lately and how I just want to see her character handled better in the games. I use her theme on my 3DS, so it got me thinking about her recently and this video is the perfect summation of my feelings for her. She's always been a favorite of mine, and once Sonic X came out, she outright became my absolute favorite. It's nice to see her getting some recognition.

The best Amy is the one from the UK's Sonic the Comic. A natural leader who is prepared to let others like Sonic take the spotlight.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes Amy in sonic x. Yes the planet of misfortune episode was bad and it made Amy a bit of a grey character but I still think she had redeemable moments that I can forgive her for that episode. She was willing to almost die to go after sonic at the end. To me that was super loyalty. Plus I thought she funny and I liked her sassy attitude.

I love Amy Rose, she is my absolute favorite character, which is why were rewriting her entire character for the redesign. Gone is the love sick attribute and obsessiveness that we know and instead we build a character that is strong and powerful. Someone who is protective of her friends to a fault and keeping her quick temper. Essentially to attempt to craft a character who struggles to embrace or hide the parts of who she want's to be with who the war demands she be.

It always annoys me when people call IDW Amy a Sally Acorn copy. Just because Amy is a strong female leader doesn't make her a reskin. A leader is a role not a personality.

Sonic The Fighters was the first time Amy was shown whacking people with a giant hammer, I feel its a significant footnote in her develipment

Another overlooked character I’d say is Big the Cat( without the memes lol). Big cat the short end of the stick because of his introduction gameplay, Not only that, but people misinterpreted his slow personality into thinking he’s either stupid or him making fun of handicapped. Big is just someone who want to have a chilled life with his best friend ( the opposite of Sonic ), but even then he’s willing to go out of his comfort zone for people he considers his friends. One of the few characters that Sonic heroes did good with is Big. While he mostly talked about froggy in that game, he’s shown and said he’d protect Amy, Cream, and Cheese. Sonic chronicles is another game that shows how big of a heart he has, and while not seeking adventure he’s always willing to help a friend. I feel as though all of team rose ( the original) needs there own game, or their own story mode. Cream and Cheese also have in rough since their game introduction barely had any story, and it was a handheld game.

I actually disagree with that small bit at the start about her having no personality. In the manual she was known as Rosy the Rascal and she actively went out looking for sonic, who she believed was her true love based on what her tarot cards said. so he had to leave wherever she was, travel to never lake and climb up the chains to reach little planet. And she reached there before sonic. That alone kinda proves to me that she has drive. and after that we see her pretty frequently in other games like the spinoff racing games and sonic the fighters, where she competed against some of the best fighters in the world like sonic and knuckles. She seemed like a secondary character by that point. Already past just being a damsel in distress. And comon, you cant really bash her for getting captured by a robot made by eggman to be sonics rival

I think there was more that could have been said about classic Amy. Amy actually started out as a character in the Sonic manga and her Pico-Pico Hammer came from her moveset on Sonic The Fighters. Despite little characterization, even on Sonic CD and Sonic The Fighters, you could see that she was already super energetic and obsessive, trying to hold Sonic in place. In addition, classic Sonic was portrayed on CD and OVA (not canon but have Sonic Team in its Credits) as being quiet, cool, preferring to be alone doing his thing, Amy being hyper energetic make the two fit on the Blue Oni and Red Oni trope.

I personally agree with how you view Amy. Her character varies hard on the writer, but is one of my favourites when written well. Every game Dimps made had (most prominently Battle) Amy be an utter psychopath, but games like SA1, SA2, Unleashed, 06, the IDW comics, etc perfectly nail who Amy is. IDW is generally my favourite, taking her character growth and expanding upon it with a more mature but still Amy-like. . .um, Amy. I do like how she does try to be a leader for a while but eventually breaks down due to her not exactly being a leader like Sally or good with paperwork like Jewel. She's a fighter and, in a way, is somewhat similar to Sonic. Both are adventurous spirits with hearts of gold. Guess that's why many ship them, including myself. Also SA2 Amy was pretty good, albeit didn't get much screentime.

4:17 Amy was GREAT in Sonic X...unfortunately then season 3 made her obsession with Sonic form SA2 and Sonic Heroes come back in full force and her temper is somehow worse than Knuckles. And because the anime is very VERY bad with the ship bait between her and Sonic because it's "Romantic Plto Tumor" aspects, it kinda drops her down and makes any of their shipping moments very ANNOYING.

You know I find it funny that when ever people think if amy rose the fans think she never have personality because of sonic or she just a girly girl because of her design. I believe neither these things and i believe that she is a tomboy that just happens to look more cutey than the other tomboy you see western media now these days. Why I think that, well when I was researching on the wiki or finding some more information about her to fin more about her, According to the wiki she is describing as the energetic tomboy. What even interesting is that her piko piko hammer also add to that; despite the hammer cute design and calling it the love hammer I think the reason sega give her the hammer than other weapons is to break the stereotypes because Guys smash and girls shoot (tv tropes) have been done over and over mostly games sometimes when there a female lead with other men. In the wiki the hammer as a weapon was given in order to strengthen her tomboyish nature.

I pour all my hopes that Rangers will do her justice like it's impossible they won't take a chance to expand her and the others in the new game! She has so much potential that many overlook... Disagree with sa2, she was sidelined, yes. But she never was obsessed with sonic and still showed a compassionate and playful side. The marriage thing if you were referring was obviously a friendly banter, amy is playful. Though the japanese dubs make this clearer

I have always had a certain interest and fascination with Amy Rose and whole really like to see her (as well as other characters) get her(/their) own game(s).

Based on your description, I don’t think the Boom depiction is honestly that bad. Beyond still having an intense crush on Sonic (the only difference being she internalizes it instead of expressing it), her compassionate side is actually her defining trait in the show. I can see why it might be a bit egregious since she takes on a motherly role as a result rather than being like a bratty little sister, but that role still does play into the mature side you describe.

Amy has to be playable in every game moving forward. Full stop. It's criminal that we constantly get the same 1-3 play styles and have Amy stuffed into an NPC role. I feel like the Boost Formula is to blame for the most part, since that only fits Sonic and Shadow (And I guess Blaze), but even in Mania we didn't get a playable Amy. Heck, with the addition of Cream, Amy basically had her own Tails - A side kick who can fly. All the pieces are there for her to take the staring role in her own game, but nope lets give Knuckles a band of never-before-seen characters and next let's give Shadow a gun. Amy came BEFORE the era of "one and done" Sonic characters, yet she's treated like them. Background characters.

It's always been crazy to me that people adore how Amy was portrayed in Sonic. I'm with you that Amy in the 2000's was great though my reasoning is different. The main thing people hated with Amy was her obsession with Sonic but that was honestly one of my favorite parts of her (excluding Heroes) it was always fun to see what type of stuff she's willing to go through just to even get his attention , be it though following him to space to help him(SA2), take care of a robot to prove her worth (Sonic Battle) and even standing up to Silver just because she knows Sonic wouldn't do bad stuff)

I agree with u so much in this video!! Amy has always been a favorite of mine, and it's always hurt me when people found her annoying or disliked her for petty reasons. I also agree with what you said about boom Amy, while it fits for boom, I've never liked the concept of completely drowning out her love for Sonic. It's always been such a cute and sometimes funny thing to see how Amy loves him, but it definitely needs to be balanced as well. Her writing in Sonic Rush for example makes her a little crazy but in Sonic Adventure it's pretty well balanced. It's clear she likes Sonic and has a little schoolgirl crush on him, but she has her priorities straight and she's capable of acting calm and friendly around him too (like in SA2 when she accompanies him and Tails and Knuckles, this ofc excluding her one line of her blackmailing for sonic to marry her). I've seen many other videos like this and it's refreshing to see Amy fans rising up to show the fanbase that Amy is not a character we'll let them sleep on

For a while, I didn't like Amy. I thought she was annoying and never vibed with with her. But as time has passed, I've come to really like and respect her. She's a kind, compassionate person who sticks by her friends and has a short but enjoyable temper. Sure loving Sonic's a big part of her personality but it's not all that's there.

I actually kinda liked her old “Sonic Fangirl” persona. It was simple and actually worked, but nowadays SEGA is trying to make her a Sally Acorn reject.
