More like it is about two men arguing. One is the father of a beautiful daughter, the other is a man trying to court the daughter. They both work with seaweed: One likes seaweed from the cliff, one likes seaweed from the ocean. So there is no point in arguing because they are both good., no right or wrong answer. The father wants to protect his daughter but the young man trying to win her over will take care of her. No point in arguing because they both have the daughter's best interests. Get the comparison?

The BEST song ever written about seaweed. Seriously, this is class. I love the rhythms. Too many amateur choirs I've heard singing this don't get the driving rhythms which Michael has very cleverly made such good use of.

This is a story about a young seaweed gatherer. He is trying to win the heart of an older seaweed gatherer's feisty daughter. 'Dúlamán' means seaweed, as it has been said, and it is his nickname because of the type of seaweed he gathers for his job. Also in the song, the mother gives advice to the fesity daughter about the boy Dulaman.

Dear Mr. McGlynn: You have created such a masterful choral piece in your native tongue, for either men's women's or mixed ensembles. Furthermore, this may be a push but I could see this song as a battle between a men's ensemble and a women's ensemble with alternating male/female soloists, it's just a thought i had after hearing this being sung by both a men's and women's ensemble. Michael would need to be very old to have written this song its over 100 years old. He may have made an arrangement of it but thats a different thing. Its a traditional song, so I think that probably where I'd start with comparisons... recognizing that its from a female perspective.. so its probably most convincingly song by a woman. There is also some humor in the song so would be good to try to put that across too....
@anunachoir
@anunachoir 10 лет назад
Yes - Michael wrote the melody and the text is pretty old, but not as old as many people would like to think. Its a mish-mash of two or more songs, and its not from any perspective as the word "I" isn't in the text. Singers in our tradition don't tend to do a nod and a wink thing at all unless the song is about sex or a goat boxing the Parish priest up the arse. Anúna isn't Celtic Fluffybunny.
