Raised listening to his dad's old records, Joey Alexander plays a brand of sharp, modern piano jazz that you likely wouldn't expect to hear from a pre-teenager. Listen as the 11-year-old delights the TED crowd with his very special performance of a Thelonious Monk classic.

I'm a jazz guitarist/pianist , and I would say that Jazz has a few hundred useful chords ( it could be said there is an infinite number of chords, but how many are useful? ), and each chord you have to be able to visualize and hear it across the keyboard, and be able to articulate according to what the hear wants to play, and do it instantly. It's one thing ti memorize every note like a classical musician, but jazz is basically making music up as you go along ( within a harmonic framework set by the composer ) so jazz, even for prodigies, takes years of knowledge acquiring and maturity of expression, let alone all the single - note line playing, but I've never seen such a prodigy in jazz as this kid. He plays like someone three times his age.

You guys make me mad. I'm pretty sure Wynton Marsalis is in a better place to judge Joey Alexander than all of you guys in the comment section, regardless of what musical background you might have (unless you're, let's say, Chick Corea). Wynton Marsalis called him "his hero" and he played with him. My jealousy-meter is off the charts when I read comments like "he's not a prodigy, he plays like a robot" or "he was forced into it, I could've done it if my parents taught me". This is NOT the right attitude to have towards a young musician like Joey. Pretty sure he has more musical maturity (and maturity in general for that matter) than all of you judging him. I'm a jazz pianist as well by the way, and I highly respect Joey; he truly has a gift since his level of playing is not what you can learn in even 11 years of constant "forced" practice. He just feels it and loves music.

+Philippe Grant I would daresay has more musical maturity than Oscar Peterson. I highly respect him, but I hate him because he makes me feel like such an inadequate piece of garbage. :(
@philippegrant2775
@philippegrant2775 8 лет назад
+Frank Zhang I wouldn't go as far as that as it would require an extensive definition of the concept of maturity, but I'm glad my comment has sparked some thought :) I've been lucky enough to play once for Oliver Jones, Oscar's student, and he would talk about how Oscar was a true genius. We could all just listen and witness a master praising another master :) Truly wonderful moment.
@ZiaLinkZen
@ZiaLinkZen 8 лет назад
+Philippe Grant I so agree with you, Philippe! Joey taught HIMSELF to play and surprised his parents with his talent. If anyone thinks this piece is too structured, then listen to some other clips or watch the special from 60 minutes. He was improvising at something like age 7 or 8, AND he's from Indonesia. As Jim Morrison used to sing, "People are strange" (and I don't mean Joey or his parents. I'm talking about some of the complainers below!!)
@philippegrant2775

It's all about playing as much as possible! :) and I wasn't aware of his family's musical background, it's good to know, thanks!
@frankzhang7529

+Rick Jordon I would be inclined to say 18 hours a day is likely very exaggerated, as that means 6 hours spent sleeping, eating, using bathroom, and other essential life functions and every other single waking moment spent practicing. But it is Oscar Peterson, so that number might be the only way to explain him.
@newvultraz
@newvultraz 9 лет назад
To everyone complaining that this isn't real jazz: Listen to Joey's rendition of "Giant Steps". Yes, THAT Giant Steps. Or "My Favorite Things". To everyone saying that his parents probably forced him to learn jazz and punishes him for "making mistakes": Jazz is not the kind of thing you learn from endless hours of disciplined practice and repetition of the same thing over and over again. That would be classical music. Jazz is improvisation, the kind of thing you can only really learn by enjoying and understanding the music you listen to and play. And there are no mistakes.

The TED comments section is just brimming with trolls and negativity these days. I would recommend this channel's moderators to close the comments section because it is a breeding ground for irrelevant, hateful folks that consequently devalue the quality of TED videos. For example, racist and stereotypical comments are upvoted and at the top of the comments section for this video. This video of a child playing wonderful music has attracted the criticisms of a spiteful, deplorable crowd. Who watches TED videos these days? Just look at the top comments. I will never look nor use the comments section of TED videos any further.

Joey is obviously very talented, and his technical skills are amazing! He was also razor focused on his performance. At one brief moment about halfway through he even seemed to feel what the music "is about." With more life experience as an adult and the emotional depth that may foster, he could become a real jazz artist. Not surprisingly and at no fault to the pianist, it's just beyond an 11-year-old's depth to convey the emotional life he hasn't had yet. I think 469 thumbs up to 50 thumbs down is unnecessarily harsh. It's not fair to give this a thumb down. But I can't give it a thumb up, because that would amount to recommending this as a musical experience. Twenty years from now, if he continues down this path, he'll probably be extraordinary, even if his technical skill is diminished. For now some classical & baroque works that are about virtuosity might be a more appropriate repertoire, if they appealed to him.

This is the problem with introducing jazz to a non-jazz public. A lot of people don't understand what's actually going on here and tend to pass it off as just another young piano player. No.. this is a young JAZZ piano player, and an excellent one at that too! There are no rankings in jazz, everyone stands their own and Joey is definitely and should definitely be put up there with the "grown" jazz pianists. Improvisation comes in with a supreme knowledge of the notes, lots of jazz chords are the same Ab C Eb and F notes, all that needs to be done is to know which sounds go and Don't go with the chord, memorize that and you can play around at any time. Basically trial and error!

Lots of people are here saying that given the right surroundings anyone could play like this. As a jazz piano player I completely disagree for those that know anything about jazz know it is much more complicated than any idea of classical music. He is the first jazz piano prodigy no one has seen something like this before because the brain has to be so far advanced in the ideas of creativity,skill, music theory and so much more to be able to improvise like this kid does. There is a reason that he is becoming famous. It's because he is a great musician.

Bear's sense of color beyond the piano may surpass Alexander's, but her sense of color on the piano is dull while Alexander's is delicate and sweet.

The title of this tune is Monk's Dream by Thelonious Monk. It was recorded by Monk in 1952. Joey knows more jazz than most of you morons will ever know at age 13. Anyone who thinks Joey's parents forced him to play piano 7 hours a day since he was 3 are cynics. Joey has a God-given talent which he choses to share with the world. He practices, jams and now performs with some of the best jazz musicians in the world. Just Google him and you'll learn that his low-key parents are just as surprised by their son's unique gift as the jazz world. Watch him in videos playing "Giant Steps" or "My Favorite Things" and you'll hear a brilliant but different interpretation every time. If you find his playing tense, forced, un-melodic and boring--to each his own. People have said that about Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk and Bill Evans, so I take no offense.

Opinions are like butt holes and everyone has one but, when you criticize something you do not understand, you become the Butt hole. There are those that are gifted and those that have to work at it. Joey is the prior and I view him as a gift to all musicians so, enjoy and support his contributions to the art and please let go of the negativity!

It's so an authentic, beyond you can imagine how he plays...it's something truly coming from your sincere heart. It's so speechless, outregous....bravo Joey, just keep doing it and you make us proud as Indonesian people, as well as the nation. Bravo.....salute Joey...we love you

To be a jazz musician at 11 years old and have the ability of any piano jazz great from the last 90 years is off the charts unbelievable. Joey is a great argument for the concept of reincarnation. There is no other way this talent can be explained.

Haha☺️ I was thinking while listening to him, "he must be one of the reincarnated greats!" I was imagining them being born into this body and thinking, (if they could be aware of it😏), "Ok, ok. I can work with this. Itty bitty body and short little fingers...that's all right. I got this." ☺️

Yes, there is. A talent is a gift, and a gift is just there, unfolding itself. This is the explanation. It is not an acquisition, it is just a gift from God, and how it happens no one knows,

Wow!!! I cannot believe the negative perhaps jealous comments going on this clip. If you are not so fond of this piece, try one of the dozens and dozens and dozens of pieces he has on RU-vid from all over the world. Try listening to his interviews on RU-vid which clearly illustrate an organic love for jazz. Try assessing what Herbie Hancock and Wynton have to say about him. I do not know what a TED is though apparently TED's crowd needs a lesson in taste. This player is the real deal. Open your ears. This is not just something he went into a practice room and practiced all his life just so that he could play one thing on the net. He plays JAZZ well. Very well. Before you speak badly or even sceptically, of him, well....just do not speak at all perhaps.

Too many people judging. on the basis of one song. Have you listened to any other his work. It is staggering, the feel, rhythm, timing, dynamism of a rare master. For example, his own composition, Soul Dreamer, close your eyes and you will think you are in the presence of a great master.

lol the commentors know nothing about jazz. Yeah lots of kids at age 11 are capable of writing their own arrangements of giant steps and leading piano trios with professional musicians while soundling like mccoy/herbie/chick. Playing jazz like this is nothing like the children prodigies who are forced to robotically learn brahms or whatever.

This kid's musical facility is off the charts...There are players that have been playing 4, 5, 6, or 8 times his lifetime who can't come close to the chops, technical ability and moxie to pull this off. He was 11 years old here. 99.99999999999% percentile of ability at his age for damn sure and not much off that for ANY age.
@Slashtap
@Slashtap 9 лет назад
This is good, but "prodigy" is a misnomer given his age. This level of play at age 11 can be achieved through work ethic alone.
@Slashtap
@Slashtap 9 лет назад
ClumsyRoot The difficulty of the piece measured against his age. Growing up in a musical environment, I witnessed this level of ability as commonplace among those who took private lessons and devoted themselves to the art.
@Slashtap
@Slashtap 9 лет назад
ClumsyRoot Indeed, commonplace, with emphasis on "...among those who took private lessons and devoted themselves to the art." Prodigy and genius can only be defined when comparing against others from the same background, not against the general populace. The latter comparison is the error the uploader makes, as evidenced in the video description "...you likely wouldn't expect to hear from a pre-teenager." Anyone with some skill can look like a prodigy if you compare him against the entire population, but to properly assign a label like, we cannot compare in that way. We have to compare like with like in order to identify true prodigies.

Joey has taken T. Monk's composition and made his own. There is no question that Monk was a brilliant composer; I just didn't appreciate his knuckle banging style. Joey's style is so much more delicate and subtle. Self-taught and clearly a gift from God to us. I'm disappointed that the videos of Joey playing with Russell Hall and Sammy Miller at Dizzy's for the launching of his album have been removed and are now inaccessible. :-(

The thing about quick-judgments is the 'potential' later embarrassment, when one finds out one is wrong. Apparently, Winton Marsalis - not to mention some of the best studio session musicians in the world - all praise this 11-year old for his remarkable 'gift'. However, obviously Winton Marsalis, et al. stand to be corrected by some of the below comments, who obviously when they were age 10, stood as towering examples of superiority. It's nice they 'feel' superior enough to judge over-against some the 'world-renowned jazz greats. But, as someone once said: a cynic is someone who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Note to self: try encouraging the kid. perhaps he will get better with age. And, who knows: he might just be as good as ya'll...one day :-P

Joey, you are amazing. Joey has a gift. It's amazing how people are so judgmental. I listened to my granddad play jazz from as early as I can remember and my style of music is reflective of that. Whether he was forced or not isn't the issue. Many kids are forced to do many things if you don't have the gift "it ain't coming out". Most non gifted people don't understand.

It's interesting to read all the comments from a non-jazz audience. The first thing that strikes me: racism. He's Asian, of COURSE his parents locked him in a room and made him practice from the age of two. I see science types aren't above sloppy thinking either. The next thing that strikes me: how willingly and quickly people rush to a superficial judgement. Thelonious Monk was, perhaps, a bit of an arcane jazz specialty, and so the accusations of "bad" or "stilted" playing that were thrown at him, are going to apply to a disciple. For non-jazz types, anyway. Jealousy, as other commentators have observed. It's here in spades. (Not) A Whole Lotta Love. My, how narrow orthodox-christian you true believers are!

To anyone saying he plays like a robot, the members of JLCO who were on the stage when he was kind of introduced to the world said that he played the song he performed differently each time he rehearsed for his performance. A whole bunch of old souls got together in this kid and we should all be lucky we are around as its happening because someone like Joey doesn't appear that often.

I totally agree with Philippe Grant, and Joeys playing is amazing at any age.He has a rare talent and you can only play at this level of jazz if you feel and love it to the extent he obviously does..Someone could practice for years and never get to this level,( I know because I`ve tried ! )

i am so tired of silly people that do not understand what jazz is and do not even try to liesten when u explain it to them. Jazz is not a simple sight reading like classical piano is. It is also not a random use of notes. I can put it this way - jazz is very similar to a real language, i mean u can learn chinese. So, consider this kid learned a chinese at a fucking high level not living in china and having no chinese parents. that is that hard. ok?

Jadi, mari dibaca dulu konteks komentar saya. Mungkin karena bahasa Inggris saya yang jelek jadi komentarnya dibaca rarely jadi nothing at all.... Sekali lagi saya cuma mau bilang, orang Indonesia kalo jadi nomor 1 di bidang tertentu pertama karena dia memang cinta mati dengan bidang tersebut, kedua karena dorongan orang tua. Bukan sebaliknya.

Sure he's not quite at the level as some world class grown-up professionals, but I'm not even sure you can find another 11 year old jazz pianist in the entire world who can express jazz as well as him and improvise like that. To anybody with no background in jazz, this video may sound like just any old song but what's needed to play like this requires years of dedication and passion that most children and even teenagers cannot exhibit.
