If I were stil flying I would think seriously about finding an AN2 they are truly a delightful looking machine! Its interesting I see this video today, I had to run to town this morning and I could see a field a mile and a half away they were spreading lime on. In the US they will haul 25 to 30 dump truck loads of lime out onto the fields and make piles at intervals throughout the fields and then there is a business around here that all they do is spread the lime out over the fields, they have large 4 wheel drive agricultural tractors and special large trailers that they load the lime into with payloaders then the tractors pull these trailers out into the field the trailers have some type of device in them that sprays the lime out and looks to cover maybe 70 feet wide swath each pass down the field, they will usually have 3 or 4 of these spreader rigs running at the same time. LIME DUST is to the EXTREME with these rigs the tractors and trailers are completely 100% covered with this dust I would guess they have some type of additional air filtration system on these tractors because I have never seen dust like that before, you can see the dust cloud for miles when this is happening!
I'm in model railroading and never much cared for flying .. But this video was absolutely fulfilling (or, should I say refilling ?) to watch... All 8-10 people involved here are showing real spot-on serious cooperation to get a dangerous job done... Heard many a jet in my time..Nice to see and hear a prop once !! And the plane itself has an intriguing cockpit and windshield...That must be some ballsy engine to handle such weight as if its carrying cotton balls ! Very entertaining. Thanks, Mark
I would say not really much for the job the plane is doing. I don't know about this one but modernised DC3 which is made in Canada using turbo prop engines has bigger compsumtion and shorter range than use to have with old radials.
“Lime” is calcium carbonate and it is in the alkaline side of the pH scale. They sprinkled it in the tops of the trees to react with the acids in the precipitation which helps preserve the foliage.
Way back in the 1980s trees in the Black #forest in Germany were dying because of the acid from industrial pollution in the rain and they were treating them with lime as a counter measure. I assume this is what they are doing here.
