Spoiler alert : It won't. It went downhill starting Warlords of Draenor that had huge potential yet was a complete letdown, and it only started going more and more nonsensical after that with threats becoming more and more cosmic in scale from the fate of the planet to the fate of the galaxy to the fate of reality. It's quite ironic that Dragonflight managed to set limit to things yet was completely underwhelming in terms of villains' charisma. Sylvanas' & Garrosh's stories eventually turned to utter shit towards the end but at least no one can deny that they were incredibly charismatic when they were in a cinematic or just talking.

I'm not convinced Xalatath is the main villain though. She's literally called the Harbinger, she's the one responsible for bringing the main villain along. We probably don't even know conceptually who the main villain is as a character, and they will begin to be built up now. Xalatath we've known for a while now, so they're leading with her for hype.

@@Alabaster_Kett I wish I had your faith. Nothing the WoW writing team has done leads me to believe they suddenly discovered nuance. I suspect she will be the main villain, or the power behind it. If it was the FFXIV writing team, I could totally believe it was a misdirect.

@@natebroadus8474 It's not really a stretch for stuff WoW's done before. I see Xalatath being the World Soul Saga's Guldan. She'll be either the second or third final raid boss of War Within and then bring through or about some void badguy for Midnight. My bigger worry than Xalatath being the main villain is that they're not gonna set up the actual villain at all, and we get another Nzoth situation where the final boss just sortof comes out of left field and then dies.

i mean you would have to have played shadowlands and actually did the quest in torghast to rescue thrall to know he actually got his powers back.

Lots of Shamen have trouble from time to time, it's easy more common than people realize. I mean, not me though.

With how often Blizzard pulls the ol' bait and switch between the build-up to an expansion and what they actually deliver, I'm going to be waiting and watching War Within for several months to see if they actually deliver on a good story and good game play. But if they don't, oh well. Elden Ring DLC will keep me busy, as will Dawntrail. Plus, I still need to pick up Ghosts of Tsushima. I've got plenty of things to keep me busy for the rest of the year, at the very least.

@@Maria_Erias I've been having dreams frequently about dusting off my old account and resubbing to the game, if only for classic to relive my nostalgia. But I've been hesitant since they fumbled so bad. Quit early on into BFA. My instincts were right because shadowlands sounds like arse.

@@Mechkami44 Shadowlands was absolutely terrible. Dragonflight is, as best, mediocre - it's about on par with Cataclysm, in my opinion. Too many dropped story lines, bungled resolutions, terrible delivery, very 'meh' dungeon content, a real lack of any PvP content, and only middling raids keeps it way down on the list for me. Which means that the people who came back to play it were like, "Eh, it's fine." And they played a couple months and then left. But after the back-to-back double stinkers of BfA and Sadlands, what's left of the hardcore WoW fan base think Dragonflight is just the best thing ever. Which, I mean I'm happy they like their game. But DF really isn't for everyone.

he isnt involved here.. he gave her the dark heart and let her go.. His literal long game is to allow her and the VOid to go rampant, forcing the Titans to return, which is his whole game.

The Dragonflight Villains were all very good honestly.

The Jailer wasnt built up in any meaningful way, meanwhile Knaifu aka Xal'atath has been in the game behind the scenes, creating mischief, biding her time and now with Iridikron, a new villain introduced in 10.0.7 she is making her move.

this seems to me an expansion focused on feelings. Have fun with that. I'll be over here playing other games, glad I got out.

It would be interesting to see WoW do an actual shades of grey storyline... if they actually know what that means. One of the things that made that Old Gods in the C'thulhu mythos so terrifying is that they don't give a crap about humans. They're ancient, massive, and inscrutable, and drawing their attention will blast a person's sanity from their sheer alienness. But in WoW, they're just like space lice shot out into space to infect planets. And they don't even work together to do that. So, it would be interesting to see Xal'atath using players as a way to either defeat her creators, or to free herself from them, and could include the players working against her at the start, only to have her realize that it would be better to work with them rather than try to manipulate them. But Blizzard doesn't (or can't/won't) do subtle storytelling in WoW, and I'm worried she's going to end up as just another mustache-twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain like every villain they've ever had. Illidan's nuance from Warcraft 3 got swept away with Burning Crusade, only to try to be patched up again for Legion. Most of Arthas' storytelling happened in Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne, and his novel. Not in WoW. Deathwing was just a blunt instrument. The only interesting facet of Garrosh was the result of a mistake on the part of the quest designers for Stonetalon. N'Zoth got turned into a super chump. And Sylvanas and the Jailer... yeesh.

This is what happens when interest in retail is so low. It's no secret that Classic has been keeping the lights on for WoW, even their newly-released sub numbers show that. But they've spent the last 3 expansions finding ways to make their players hate everything about the game that the few people still clinging religious to retail because they don't know that they can go and play other games - even other versions of WoW! - will jump at anything that doesn't immediately suck.

Off course not. Part of his 9000 iq plan. His death was merely a setback. I knew he couldn't defeat everyone so he played us, in killing him he was send to the mega death realm, where he is now playing knaifu whilst sylvy is farming for him.

I don't know, I really liked Jaina's story arc in the beginning of BfA. Her coming to grips with her past traumas and mistakes. Reconnecting with her mother. Actually acting like a grown-ass 40-year-old woman instead of a bratty, emotional teenager. Of course, Blizzard threw all that character growth right out the window in Shadowlands.

@@Maria_Erias The "idea" of story arc was good , the execution not so much , it really felt rushed (like anything related lore in this game to be honest) Same happen with garrosh , there was a quest in Cata where he kill one of his commanders for bombing alliance civilians and what he does in pandaria? nuke a whole city... it's like they forget what they put in the game The only somewhat good story telling using blizzard character is done in books, but that really doesn't count...

@@miros05 Yeah, I agree. And that questline in Stonetalon with Garrosh killing his commander because the dude attacked a civilian target was the result of a miscommunication on the part of the quest team - basically, the team who made that quest line did it without being told what they were supposed to do. So that honorable side of Garrosh - ostensibly the part of him that made him the most orcish - was a fluke. Which kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? WoW characters only have interesting growth or character arcs when someone screws up. Blizzard can accidentally itself into success, but always fails whenever they actually try.

Go back and see TBC Sunwell intro or Wotlk e3 intro to look at what real quality is. What we have here is 10 year old mentality level villain.

Nah, Blizzard doesn't do in-house testing. They let their players (and, of course, streamers) act as unpaid alpha and beta testers, and to generate hype for their game. Then they usually wind up changing a bunch of stuff between the beta and release after all that hype has conned people into buying preorders, swapping out fun and interesting gameplay mechanics for power grinds. They've done it with every expansion since Legion, pretty much.

@@XenosFFBE You bet, mate. The thing is, in order to do the beta, you've got to preorder. So Blizzard wants you to dump $60 (plus a $15 subscription fee) to test their game for them. And then they're just going to change it anyway.

I can't help thinking about all the dropped storylines in Dragonflight alone. The oathstones. The start of the story in the Azure Span that went nowhere. The Primalist Future. The burning of Loamm. The scuffed, nonsensical "friendship is magic" ending to the Amirdrassil story arc.
