I spent an day railfanning in Fort Madison, Iowa along the Mississippi River in early July 2023. Fort Madison is best known for its double track swing bridge across the Mississippi River and more recently for the presence of a Virtual Railfan live streaming camera in town. While I was there, I was able to see a variety of BNSF freight trains, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, and the bridge open for a tug boat traveling upstream.

Great video! Next time, come back for Ft Madison River and Rail Days. It's always the last weekend in September. 50-60 railfans there this year.

Great video from the top and opposite of the V/R static camera. I love seeing that old swing bridge in action. A few outsiders have asked, why not build a new bridge to accomodate the vehicle traffic? That's because BNSF maintains the bridge and charges a toll for general maintenance and upkeep.

From the air, that parking lot at Riverview Park looks just like one of those Wilkinson Sword Double Edge shaving razor blades. Nice video!😁👍 Since I have lived on the West Coast all of my life, it seems so strange to scan the horizon in all directions not see any mountains!

The aerial shots are amazing, but I'm not gonna lie.....I'm so used to the smooth roads and colorful buildings of Florida that this place looks sort of sad

I echo the comments of others in saying that I really enjoyed your video. As a regular watcher of the Fort Madison VR camera it's really nice to get a different perspective. I've looked at Google satellite view and Google street view to provide this as well and to put the camera in context. Incidentally you can take a virtual boat trip on the Mississippi at Fort Madison. When I was young I was on a manually operated road and rail swing bridge when it was operated. Two men took a T-like metal rod and walked around in circles to open and close the bridge. As bridge was single deck and one lane either a motor vehicle could cross it or a train, but not both at once. The rail line has since been removed.

This is my favorite railcam to watch online. How many trains run through there per day?

Oddly enough, even though I live only 2.5 hours away from this historic bridge, the only swing bridge I have ever seen is over 1000 miles away on Merritt Island: Mathers Bridge near Dragon Point

I have been enjoying your Brightline videos for a long time. Great to have you come out here to the Midwest! I have always been especially impressed by your drone shots. I do have one question about them: Where do you place the microphone to get such great horn, crossing, and train noises? Next to you as you fly the drone?

I don’t have a standard location really, just wherever is convenient. Sometimes the audio is just from the ground camera if I set one of those up.

Great video wish you could have caught derailed moving when bridge opened and closed.

That is some swing bridge! I was not sure if cars still drove on the upper level with all those dips and drops on the roadway. (Not sure if I would want to cross it!) You really captured some great aerial shots and of the Amtrak stopping at a small town America station. (AT&SF) (And a nice shot of the old Santa Fe locomotive and tender) Really nice and great job as always!

Thanks for sharing this awesome video. Is there a certain schedule when the bridge opens, or does it open every time a barge is approachimg? And if ship and train are arriving at the same time, who has to wait? And yes, I admit I know this place from V/R but this looks entirely different, much wider and larger than from the webcam on the ground.

I don't have any details on how the bridge operates, but it appears that it opened upon request of the tug boat.

The river traffic takes priority over the rail and opens upon request of the river captains

Great video. I understand you were focusing on the drone, and scenery, but the trains looked so small and way too far away.

I figured most people familiar with Fort Madison have seen a close up of the trains via the Virtual Railfan camera, so I wanted to focus on the rest of the area as I knew I couldn’t outdo their point of view.
