Nice work. Thank you for sharing your love of nature and the great rewards you receive photographing them. I am an East-Central Floridian with ancestors from Scotland. This video added sites I am interested in seeing during a hoped for upcoming return to Scotland - with a major objective being finding Puffin habitats to photo the incredibly cute birds. Nice shots!! I will no seek spots around Aberdeen to visit.

You made everyone smile this morning, Kim! How the birds are with each other, how they interact with the environment around them, and that last shot where the bird is looking at you with nest / bed fodder in its beak, is wonderful. Thanks for taking us to the seaside :)

I love your diversity. Landscape, macro, wildlife and all captured beautifully. Only trouble is I now want a long range lens! I was out yesterday and there were birds of prey above me but I don't have the lens to capture them. I could have had some stunning photos 😪 Thank you Kim your images are superb & who doesn't love a puffin?!

Maybe sail to the Isle of May from Arnstruther in Fife where there are an estimated 92,000 puffins, as well as other seabirds, seals, an occasional whale and some spectacular cliffs, lighthouses & all that. A brilliant day out. Best later in June or July when they are out of their burrows and you get shots of puffins with sandeels in the mouths.

Do enjoy the way you can jump from landscape photography to educational about Scotland itself and then onto wildlife. It's not just a "here's my amazing photos" it's always got more story and education in it. Im missing my puffin fix, saw them at Sumburgh the last 2 years.

Aw gotta love puffins! On a trip to Scotland a few years ago we went to Handa Island in the hopes of seeing some even though it was the very beginning of the season. As luck would have it I got to see a single, solitary one, which I was so grateful for. Gorgeous creatures and I really enjoyed you taking us to photograph them!

Years ago I just missed the Puffin opportunity in the NE United States. It was great to see the many splendid shots of the little birds you did. Can you speak to what mode you shoot? Aperture, shutter or manual settings I assume shutter priority for moving birds? Why do you use 1/500 for birds sitting and not flying? Are Puffins still moving a little when they perch on the cliffs? Thank you again for another entertaining video.

I’m off to Northumberland’s coastline this weekend and my main objective is to film some puffins. I have only seen them once, but this time I am armed with a sexy camera and a 400mm zoom lens. If I can capture anything half as good as your puffins then I will be content. 😀

Love that spot but did not see puffins then, but last year I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours on lunga with them. Definititely hard to track! Loved taking portrait type shots though as they are more individual than it might seem at first glance. Did love your shots with the beak rubbing behaviour.

Kim I liked the last picture your lens is nice and sharp wide open my Tamron 75-300mm does not get sharp until f-11 maybe I'll try my Sigma 18-250 a sharper newer lens for wildlife photography I know it works good in landscape photography.

Beautiful shots Kim! Just a quick question, what mode do you shoot in when photographing birds? I'm thinking shutter priority would be best. What are your thoughts?
@paulbarnard5267
@paulbarnard5267 4 года назад
From the data displayed it looks like Kim was using aperture priority with a fixed ISO. The aperture and ISO is the same for most of the images and the shutter speed changes. Your camera and lens makes quite a difference to what works best. The old school approach would be shutter priority as you suggest but current generation cameras and lenses let you mix it up to prioritise depth of field (Kim’s approach here), motion blur (shutter priority) or control of both motion and depth of field (manual with auto ISO).

Try using your crop-sensor camera. The 300 mm lens becomes 450.
@ianmackenzie8584
@ianmackenzie8584 4 года назад
No it doesn't, it just gives the field of view of a 450mm, not the magnification.

Which reserve did you visit for puffins? I was hoping to see some at Auchmithie yesterday but I had limited mobility and didn't know where to look so didn't go for a longer walk. I did see some fulmars though which was nice and briefly some dolphins went past. I've heard Fowlsheugh I think recommended for puffins which is near Stonehaven. I hope my knee recovers quickly so I can get back out before the breeding season is over.

Very enjoyable video! I think puffins suffer from their appearance as being cute and adorable. Clearly, when you look deep into their eyes, they are also thoughtful philosophers, contemplating the meaning of life. Webbed feet hamper their handwriting legibility unfortunately.
