@@seandenby2304 Actually, Pearson literally did everything in his power to NOT make that mistake. The ground team were the ones who fucked up the conversion right, and get this: Pearson DOUBLE CHECKED the conversion himself personally...but since the incorrect conversion rate value given by Canada Air corporate was the same, he arrived at the same fuel amount as the ground team. This combined with the faulty fuel sensor, that again, the ground technicians provided meant that it was borderline impossible for this guy to have predicted + averted the entire clusterfuck. Any landing everyone can walk away from is a win, especially when it's a commercial airliner with no fuel. Rain out of fuel mid way through, in this case due to a major fuel leak from improper maintenanc , and had to land on a US air force base on the Azores islands.

How brainless this video is to blame front line personnel for improperly converting between the systems. REALITY is that such conversion wouldn't have been necessary if the airline wasn't stupid enough to use different measuring systems on different aircraft. They simply did that to cut corners and save some money at the risk of a disaster. But the people at the bottom always get the blame, right ?

in fact there was a computer curcuit board on board that was fried , and because the plane was so new , they didnt have a spare one , that fried board was indeed related to the fuel gauge system and was determind by maintenence that it wasnt significant enough or effect the operation of the plane to hold the flight back .

I really cannot believe you left the most impressive part of the story out: The fact the pilot actually did a huge forward slip in a 767 to scrub off speed while descending to the runway. It had NEVER been done before, (at least in a 767 with no engine power) even during test flights. The plane was also nicknamed the Gimli Glider.
@Goabnb94
@Goabnb94 4 года назад
Every test in a simulator afterward, all crashed. What works in theory doesn't always work in practice, and what doesn't work in theory may work in practice. Could be the simulator isn't perfect either. Of course, going into the simulator you knew the situation and what you were trying to do, and you don't have the stress of trying to save your own life and the lives of everybody on board.
@TheCho22

What is a forward slip? What is a huge forward slip? Why is the fact that there’s no engine power matter? (Might be inferred from first two answers) Asking to appreciate the facts more
@Goabnb94
@Goabnb94 4 года назад
@@TheCho22 I'm sure I'm probably using the wrong terminology, but its when the pilot turns the rudder one way, and the flaps on the wings the other way. So the rudder is trying to pull the plane to the side, and the wings are counteracting this motion. As a result, the plane ends up travelling more on its side. Imagine sitting in a plane seat facing north. You expect the nose to be heading north and the wings east-west orientation, but in a slip the nose might be pointing north-east, the wings northwest-southwest orientation, but you're still travelling north. This procedure is done in gliders or single engine turbo-props where there body is flexible, light and not much instruments or components. It had never been done in a passenger jet, and there was no guarantee it would work, that the plane would remain airbourne, or that the wings could handle the forces and not break up. There was also no guarantee the pilots would be able to pull the plane out of this orientation in order to land. This is also why a lack of engines matter, there is no pulling out of it if things go wrong. There was also no engine power to brake with so they had to drop their speed and still have the right approach to land on the runway.

Goabnb94 Rudder left, ailerons right. The term you were looking for is called “crabbing”. Looking down from above, the plane faces 15-30 degrees to the left, but continues traveling straight towards the runway. It’s not usually done because it’s never needed to. It was not impressive that the plane held together, it was impressive given how unorthodox it was.

My favorite part about the whole story is that when the plane came to a stop there were fires going on in the nose of the plane, and all the drag racers grabed their fire extinguishers out of their race cars and ran down the track to help put out the fires. I actually know people who were raceing there that day.

You missed a couple interesting details on the Gimli Glider. The math error was the conversion factor factor between weight and volume as performed by one pilot and verified by the other. The only problem was that the verifier checked the conversion factor with the originator and propagated the error. You had 4 units in play, lb, gallons, litres and kg (possibly USG and Imp G as well?). An understandable mistake but lessons were learned! Also, the van carrying the mechanics from Winnipeg to Gimli to repair and recover the plane -- ran out of gas on their way.

Seb Exactly that's the *REAL* issue here in this story. They were low on fuel the whole time they were flying, and didn't even know? They should have known they were low on fuel long before the engine cut out. That's not a good enough. That's the critical failure. I hope the rules have changed since 1983. That's totally unacceptable. I wouldnt get in my car without a proper fuel Guage, let alone fly a fucking plane with 150 souls on it. Madness. Totally preventable incident here. There's no excuse for that. The conversion issue is irrelevant

@@octave1 Ah, trolling back I see. The imperial system that you call "american" was here long before the nouveau aristocracy taught us that the metric system is "better". No one underfilled a wing tank because of the imperial system until the switch to the metric system. So the metric system is implicated no less than the imperial system. The last SI unit will be converted to pure formula this November, the kilogram. That will be the last day us peons will be able to measure a kilogram properly. Then, only the rich and powerful will be able to afford the instrumentation and skills required to properly measure a kilogram. An so the avoir-du -pois system will also be tied to this venerable and great aristocracy of liberalism of the rich and elite of Europe, just like the old days, when the foot of their kings was the unit of measure. Almost nothing in nature is evenly divisible by 10, a number only made convenient by the fingers on our hands rather than by anything we do with them. Please, the metric system is no better than base-12 or base-60, and it is also completely useless and annoying in computer science, where base-2 rules for the foreseeable future. The tanks on this airplane should have been filled with both units of measure until their industry was completely and thoroughly converted.

I must say I am slightly disappointed by this video. I have prior knowledge of this incident and you didn't even mention the side slip that Pearson did. You mentioned he had prior gliding experience, why not link back to that by talking about how a side slip allowed them to burn off some of the extra speed and height allowing them to land. There are images that were taken of the plane after it landed of this exact incident. Why didn't you include them? Would certainly have made it more interesting. Also, I was half expecting the title to be "An Airplane Ran Out of Fuel at 41,000 Feet. Here's What Happened to their kidneys" :D
@tosh40638
@tosh40638 5 лет назад
Also at no point in the video was the phrase "Gimli Glider" used which is what the incident is commonly called. Also the plane was called that in its many years of service after the incident. Would be helpful to put "Gimli Glider" in the video in case people want to Google it for more details.

I did a quick search on the story and while they did an epic job on landing the plane, there were some mistakes both pilot and co-pilot made prior to take off, as well as the ground crew. A big mistake was the plane was not considered flight-worthy if its fuel gauges weren't working but the pilot signed off on them being broken because he thought the plane came in that way and thought the previous pilot had signed off. Just lots of little mistakes that added up to a potential disaster.

@daerdevvyl4314
@daerdevvyl4314 5 лет назад
Piemasteratron I know some parts that weren’t included in the video. (I live maybe 3 hours away from Gimli.) At the time the plane landed, there weren’t any cars on the runway/drag strip. But there were 3 kids on bicycles. Suddenly this huge totally silent plane appeared from nowhere, and the kids had to ride like hell to get out of its way. There were a lot of cars parked at the end of the runway, and it looked for a bit like the plane would smash into all of them. But of course they managed to get it stopped. Afterward the plane was called the Gimli Glider, and people would say “Hey, remember the Gimli Glider?” Years later (I’m thinking about 2008), one of those boys on the track, now a man, was driving his car on a highway when a small plane made an emergency landing on the highway. He said he thought “Oh no! Not again!”

@brianobrian6637
@brianobrian6637 5 лет назад
@@cixlo Ultimately, it comes down to the P.i.C. (pilot in command) & It's always easy to fault someone in life & always in business! From a commercial Pilot's perspective; I feel the upper management at Air Canada holds significant liability in this. I am also aware of & openly acknowledging, surprisingly, this is the first account of this incident I have heard ! While highly entertaining & lol funny, this was an avoidable situation from the start. Again, going off what I learned here & while people @ large tend to almost "need?" To place blame on one or more persons. Had it not been for these 2 Pilot's heroic reaction to certain disaster, the pain & suffering, possible physical destruction (my immediate fear would be a school or similar structure being unavoidable in an almost nearly crippled aircraft) Would have affected hundreds of people & families, possibly more. Again, I'm not familiar with this particular incident & my opinion is just that. Quite simply, I would HIGHLY agree the break down in communication contributed heavily & almost certainly would have avoided it! Where or who dropped that ball, idk enough to make a statement of such immense proportions. This could quite easily have been on another, much less entertaining video! My largest hope is that Air Canada & the entire aviation community took appropriate measures to be certain that this would not even be possible to have ever, happen again ! Failure by design to an extent & in aviation, especially commercial aviation! Knowing this potential was lurking & allowing it to exist, I feel it was someone other than the pilot's who are to blame & could have/SHOULD have, outright prevented, or even communicated appropriately, like you mentioned, preventing almost certain disaster! Absolute bottom line for me, is it's a stressful enviroment; When lives are at stake, any & every possible safety measure should not only be implemented, rather become procedure as most aspect's of flight are. Lol funny to hear it told as was, but T.G. 2 Pilot's may/may not have made a major oversight, They redeemed themselves in my book @ the end of the day! Amen

@BirdieRumia
@BirdieRumia 5 лет назад
@@Uniquaization The captain "slipped" the plane sideways, basically throwing or skidding the plane sideways through the air ,like a car drifting but instead it's a freaking jetliner . This was a ridiculous feat of skill because the plane is way too big to usually do that kind of thing especially without engine power, but he pulled it off anyway because there was no other way to get it onto the runway at the right time.
@oipbhakeld
@oipbhakeld 5 лет назад
I watched that movie too. people might understand better if you called it side slipping. it's not really that hard, either.
@davidfowler7040
@davidfowler7040 5 лет назад
@@Uniquaization Slipping is when you use cross controls such as left aileron and right rudder. It causes the air plane to fly a little sideways and is mainly used when you need to lose a little altitude fairly quickly. You would need to do this so that you touch down at the start of the runway rather than the middle of it.
