Yes by miles - but considering it’s a totally non period spec “e type” it was never going to be caught. Should be same rules for celebrity drivers as everyone else , or everyone brings more power and less weight ….?
@@therealsharps I hear you. And I agree the Jag is a bit of a monster in this class. They had to do something about the Cobra’s dominance. I think they may have let the Jaguar out a bit to far.
I'd argue that vintage racing is more exciting than any modern racing due to greater car variability and lower traction keeping the cars moving around a lot more with much less aero.
Can't tell how much I love these races. All about driving skills and to achieve max out of dated vehicles completely removed from modern day enhancements. Pure magic. Reminded me our gen started our driving experiences. Thanks and please keep on posting
The definition of an original cobra can be stretched in many bizarre ways these days, especially since I believe Shelby is in charge of certification. Goodwood gets the creme de la creme though. It’s possible all or most of them are true originals rather than ones rebuilt around a small scrap of surviving of a surviving frame. Awesome either way.
@@The_ZeroLineI grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and I was in love with the Cobras. I lusted after them. I got to watch these cars in original races on TV in the 60s. 😊 This is reliving my past, but as an adult. I cringe though when I see one crash. They are sooo expensive now! I'm just Ahhhhh, noooo! 😊
I just LOVE classic race cars. Way more beautiful than today's F1 and Indy cars anyway. Thanks for sharing, appreciate it a LOT 👍 Greetings from the Netherlands, T.
I cannot recall someone just leaving the field like this......JB!!!!...Ive watched for 10 yrs...... Ive seen TK run thru the field from the rear....but look at this
Love Newey's attitude! It's a race car. Race it, and race things happen. I have the same attitude with vehicles, etc. that I own. Granted, they aren't million dollar cars, but the sentiments are the same.
What was really amazing as they kept talking about Jensen Button was second place the next fastest on the track two seconds a lap slower while the others were a second a lap slower than the TVR it shows both top drivers doing their thing and then the second driver misses out.
i really enjoyed watching this amazing event with all of these great beautiful old ladies that can still show their teeth on this Legendary Racetrack ! Great images and sounds.....Wonderful Stuff indeed....Old Coventrarian !
That works E-type did a 1:23.7 on cross ply tires. The fastest Porsche 911 GT3 RS time that I could find for Goodwood was only a half second faster. - on modern tires! To add further insult, the jag was running old solid rotor Mk 9 brake rotors!
Several explanations: (a) listen to the engine....it does not sound very historic (b) Mr Button is quite an experienced for a historic racer ;-) (c) some of these E-types are posting lap times faster than 1970s BMW CSL touring cars on big slicks with 24V 500 bhp engines. (But this probably why they are driven with the boot lid propped open and occasionally melt their transmissions...)
@@Andrew-vx2ls Some more explanations: I don't know when the CSL went round, but if you are referring to GW speedweek that was a standing start so not very comparable. Plus this E Type has been in the Red Bull F1 wind tunnel to re-mould the whole rear of the car for better aero
@@Andrew-vx2ls A number of Lightweights had a vent in the bootlid to replicate the open boot scenario. An appendix to Porter's wonderful 'biography' of 4WPD illustrates the development of the bootlid vent.
Something is up with that e-type. It doesn't seem legit. If it is then it belongs in a different class. That was definitely not all driver. TBH I'm glad it broke down. The real race was behind it.
I'm thinking the same thing. E types never hung with cobras before, now all of a sudden this one pops up and humiliates even the fastest cobras and the TVR? As if jags never had fast drivers in them before
@@trudimension2830 Just remember that in the E-Type's heyday, Graham Hill was unbeaten in a Lightweight: and that was against GTOs and other assorted wonders...
What is the engine size and Hp limit in this class ......... Cobra's had 427's in them .....I am guessing the Cobra's in this race are running the V-8 289 ci .......
Nitrous oxide is why.. Notice not one other Jag pulled a cobra like that and the in car cam showed him hitting the the button on the wheel which caused the rear end to fail...
Brilliant race! What’s the age criteria for these cars? I had a 7 TVRs, a few were 1980s classics.. 420 SEAC & 450 SEAC. There’s a yellow ex race car, factory 420 SEAC TVR knocking about.. I knew the guy who owned it a few years ago, but it may have been sold on again? That would be cool to watch race in this series….
A quick question - has the great Lightweight 'E' 4WPD been retired from Historics? I haven't seen the car around for a couple of years, and it used to be a Goodwood regular. I know the car had a major off some years ago, but it was rebuilt and rejoined the fray for a while. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Regards, P.
Bloody Eff wun drivers, break everything!! Actually he seemed to be very smooth and gentle on the car. And quick! They need to announce penalties well before the end of the race. The way that happened was poor. Otherwise an excellent race and those cars sound so tuff.
What in goods name is lurking under Jenson Buttons bonnet...? He just sodded off and left all the Cobras in the dust. Is it still the Jaguar straight six or has he a tuned version of the V12 powering his car...? Must be one of the fastest E-types I've ever seen.
Considering how few AC Cobras Carroll Shelby actually built, it's surprising to see that many one place. Or are some of these replica cars? Also I never saw a cobra with these hard tops. Consider the performance, I assume the TVR is actually a TVR Griffith the Ford V8 motor. I drove one once and found it a very quick car.
I would take any of these pure mechanical beauties for a daily drive over any modern SUV or sports car these are cars the stuff they sell today completely isolate yourself from pure driving (traction control ABS etc)
My BGT fits the bill. None of that nonsense on it either. That's why I bought it, they'll never make cars like it again. It keeps my equally analog MR2 company 🙂

A lot of that stuff is a legal necessity. Perhaps some of the early Lotus Elises would be close? They don't have power steering or any driver aids like traction control as far as I know (apart from power brakes).
Everyone shifts into 2nd before that chicane - it's a second gear corner. He 100% broke that car by lugging it in 3rd while shocking the drivetrain over the ripple strip.
@@dicksandballsnshit3856 You have a point there. Maximum torque applied while the driveline is being jerked by gain/loss/gain/loss of traction on the ripples...
I really wish the people calling the race would just shut up so we can listen to the cars! How about one lap with no talk in each style car? We love car because of the sensory stimulus!
Terrible race coverage after the first 45 minutes! We had positions 3 through 5 swapping back and forth and yet we're forced to watch the parade between 79 and 47 for 1st and 2nd, while ALL the action was going on behind them between the 8, 12 and 13 cars.
Poor Brits seem slightly confused by Jimmie Johnson. _Wait, he's a... NASCAR champion. Hmm. Right. Well, there you are, I suppose. Perhaps he's lost, and has stumbled onto his Lordship's grounds by accident. One can never be quite sure with Americans, you know..._
I love Goodwood revival more than any other racing anywhere. But the Jenson Button nitrous oxide fiasco was awful !!! No other Jaguar has ever pulled a Cabra like he did ever. You can see and hear him hitting the button; It's what broke the rear end...
Is it me or does it look like at 27:04 that Button’s driving partner completely forgets he’s driving a stick-shift, and actually goes to up-shift as if he’s got a paddle gear shifter on the wheel? You can see his hands motioning as if he’s going to shift up on phantom paddles on his wheel, and it looks like he’s punched the clutch as well at the same time. That might’ve been what caused it to slip out of gear and retire the car. I may well be wrong but I know if I’d dropped the clutch having built up such high revs in my old car it would have destroyed the gearbox and lost all power… slightly different car tho lol.
I thought I knew something about cars but I've never heard of a TDR. Looks like a type of Ford. Very cool car, can someone enlighten me with more about this car?
@@markholroyde9412 know all about Neweys E type it's a very trick car with a lot of his input in it to go quickly including the boot slightly open to improve aerodynamics
@@ScarletUK2010 No that's the last works e-type. Unlike the other "semi-lightweights" running iron blocks and steel monocoques, this thing's the real deal. Nothing out of period. My brother spent a lot of time looking the car over this weekend. Still on Mk9 solid disks, etc. The motor is alloy block (legit!) and wide angle head (also legit). Has Lucas injection (as was available). I think he said it's running a ZF 5-speed which is fine. Car has lots of tuning but that's ok, all the cobras do too. Every Cobra there is from Provo Utah.
I don't watch racing. This is fantastic racing! But I'd like to know what modern commercially available cars would do. Is it a slam dunk that modern would win here? I don't mean modern race cars. Modern consumer cars...
A modern Hyundai wouldn't stand a chance, a modern Corvette would probably run laps around them. What's so appealing with these cars, is the fact that they have to be driven in a completely different manner due to the bias ply tyres, the racing is certainly action packed and risky due to the grass.
AC?Ford Cobra Cobra's built for the US market had LHD and were sold by Ford dealers as Fords. RHD Cobra's were made for the British market and sold as AC's.
how many licence points is winning a goodwood race. surely winning a goodwood race is now a bucket list thing for old racers. would be cool if they could settle on a few formula and maybe go world wide. the old race cars series always do well on broadcasts. its about the width of race track to size and power ratio also, makes for better racing. old spec racing is always one of the better support categories - why isnt their a limited world wide series ? is it because motorsport wasnt worldwide it was regional so old time racers in australia wont cross over with europe or US. very hard to homologate some of those aussie bathurst winning cars - they took those to world touring car and spanked the europe weetbix burners. i do love GT4 and GT3 formula for the asthetic. Its also one of the preferred sim leagues. with so many artificial formula why are these shelved - put kids in them race kids in old cars...GT kids.
Real deal. The car Jimmie Johnson's driving (the red #13) for example, is a car that raced at Le Mans in the 1960s, and is also a right-hand drive version. The TVR that crashed into the barriers, that even raced at Goodwood in the 1960s. One notable DNS in this race is a Ferrari 250 LM, that one is the second to last 250 LM built, and finished 2nd overall at Le Mans in 1965.
Did you watch the in-car camera shots? The best drivers' hands are so much more calm. Compared to the others, Jensen was so much more in control, with so much less sawing of the steering wheel. All those extraneous and reactionary inputs slow down the car.
I just cannot believe that all those AC Cobras are real classics. I don't remember that many of them back in the sixties. And those Chevrolet thingies are as ugly as I remember.
@@jaggedpancake5353 Close to period spec. All parts have to be of period style. Parts nowadays are just produced to a higher standard, and telemetry gives the teams the best possible setup to make the cars faster
The day i see a Jag pull away from an AC on the straight is the day i laugh my azz off at some very poor driving. SAFTY CAR? you guys are a joke. I've seen enough.
