An ALMOST Perfect Ryzen Ultrabook - ASUS ZenBook 14 Review

The ASUS ZenBook 14 with AMD Ryzen 4700U processor is one of the best ultrabooks we've test. It has a super long battery life, amazing performance benchmarks for the 4700U and a pretty low price. But the Zenbook 14 UM425IA release date and limited availability might make it really hard to find and we also found some other problems with the ASUS notebook that make it fall just short of being the best Ryzen laptop of 2020.

@@VinnyGrant Gee, must be REAL convenient to carry a dongle to connect any regular pair of headphones or have 2 hours of downtime when your BT headset is charging up, right? @@nafisulislam4376 Boy I do wish I was getting paid for it. Most modern wireless earbuds have what, 48 hours of charge in their case, and 8 in the buds themselves. 8 Hours is an assload of time to be using headphones. Even if I manage to drain them down, my BT buds charge an hours worth of playback in like 5-10 minutes. So just dont be a noob and charge your shit overnight and you'll never run out of battery for more than 5 minutes at a time. So... yeah, your sarcasm was actually pretty spot on, it is incredibly convenient. Wires suck.

@dewdew80
@dewdew80 3 года назад
@@saif7609 It refers to a small board connected to the motherboard, usually by these little ribbon cable things. They're usually used to add more connectivity to a laptop motherboard. My argument is that if there is room for a 3.5 mm jack on a daughter board, then there is room to replace it with something superior that can still function as a headphone jack, like USB C. edit: Also the whole "just another dongle to lose thing" just fills me with so much contempt. Either get headphones with a modern connection on them, or be grateful that a company releasing a brand new laptop bothered to include an adapter so you can keep using your old headphones.

Been waiting for this one! Good review man. Just one thing I’m wondering. I’ve seen multiple reviews now where you’ve had trouble with Davinci on iGPU’s and been theorising why it hasn’t been working. I believe davinci is built primarily to rely on GPU acceleration for rendering and as such blackmagic only officially supports discrete GPU’s with 4GB VRAM or more for the application. Some have had success with iGPUs in certain scenarios but it’s touch-and-go with which ones will work since it isn’t officially supported and there is no VRAM for the export. Do you think this could be the issue you’re having? Cheers.

I have a benchmark suggestion related to full cpu load and battery life: I think a more interesting test than "how long does it last under full load" would be "how much battery does it take to accomplish x task", where the task is something like exporting a video in premiere or transcoding in handbrake, etc. That gives a more interesting picture of how much battery life you get when you're not just running an endless stress test, but actually trying to accomplish a task like you would IRL.
@LILEE376
@LILEE376 3 года назад
Yes, that would be more fair comparison, because the full load power/performance is completely different between two notebook. For example, a Ryzen 4700u on full load does twice as work as a four core Ryzen or four core Intel alternative in a multicore optimised task, so it burns much more battery. When they compare two laptops in this way, they should weight in the finished workload too.
@playJONOS
@playJONOS 3 года назад
how would this account for different battery sizes for different laptops?
@LILEE376
@LILEE376 3 года назад
@@playJONOS You can adapt to the different battery size, but I would not compare such laptops, with too many different components. These Asus Zenbooks are almost perfect choice for this kind of comparison, but this is a rare thing. Usually the AMD version of a notebook models are paired to weaker components. Probably the Intel forces the manufacturers to make crappy AMD notebooks. I hope this "habit"/"tradition" comes to an end soon. (sry for my bad English)
@tarfeef_4268
@tarfeef_4268 3 года назад
@@playJONOS it accounts for it because you can say "I rendered this project and it took 20%. Therefore this laptop has 5 renders of battery life in it. That is better than this other laptop which only could do 2 renders before dying" Shit like that

@@hwstar9416 dude. They are cheap and offer better audio. When I'm on the go, I use one by default on my phone and laptop. Better audio compared to any built in, including my computer. But for my computer I use a separate dac amp, so then the dongle can't compete. Like, if someone is paying 900 for a laptop that is an otherwise great value, a headphone jack shouldn't be the dealbreaker. Something like a bad display should be a deal breaker. Obviously this is my opinion. I think people that think that headphone jacks are dealbreaker are wrong, but that's not my ultimate decision to make for them. I'm just making a case for the laptop that a dongle is not only easy to use, it will sound better. Unfortunately, so many people haven't even dipped their toes into the world of higher end audio, and thus many don't even think about the improved audio offered by a good dongle.

@hadifelani 3 года назад
@@nexusproductions2064 Time will only tell though. It's not that I disagree with you, it's also a possibility since they have done it before in mid 2000s. But speaking realistically, the Ryzen is still way much younger compared to Intel's core i series. Disclaimer, I am no fanboy nor I try to defend either side. I just speaking in the perspective of how companies think. So back to topic, The most possible things of why they does seem to "cheap out" on amd is because the track record. in the last decade intel dominates the laptop market, while amd laptops (pre-ryzen) are just bad. So the way those companies think will be they gonna cheap out on AMD's new CPU lineup to check out how thing's going (to see whether if they're going to make any profit) even if their desktop counterpart are in fact a success in recent years. Sadly this also applies to some of their desktop products too like motherboards or graphics cards. I mean, looking back at pre-Ryzen, it wouldn't strange if most laptop brands still sticking up to Intel. Because , it would be a daring move for a company that have already makes millions of dollars to suddenly 100% invest on anything other than Intel (in their perspective of course). And if that move fails then the loss they could suffer is definitely big. Its only natural that they're cheaping out first. They just chose not to spend a lot of budget on the manufacturing for Ryzen, just yet. Then, considering how the market (at least in my country) treats and see AMD products quality (both desktop and laptop), they're still known as the old n hot bulldozer cpu mess by some. Even people around me still tends to believe/chose in intel considering their products quality in the last decade. But that also perhaps because my country is a 3rd world, that made the info flows a bit later.

ASUS was giving one with an ess sabre dac, which will very,very likely better than the typical realtek.the headphone jack will not stop me personally from getting an otherwise incredible laptop at the price. Also, as a side note, getting a good dongle will sound way better than the built in laptop jack. About 40 for a good one that you can use anywhere with significantly improved audio. I'm not buying another zenbook for a few years. I bought a zenbook (ux305ua) from Asus on amazon and I fell in love. Then I actually got it. The hinge mechanism isn't all its cracked up to be, battery life needed major work (i5/8gb/256gb), I had to choose either a matte screen or back-lit keyboard, I had to reinstall multiple drivers right out of the box- and again multiple times over the years, and I didn't receive the one dongle they promised (mini hdmi to ethernet, or regular hdmi) nor the case sleeve I saw in multiple unboxings. The laptop is the bomb- until I try my gfs slightly older MacBook, or her work laptop (hp latitude) and I'm reminded how smooth a laptop experience should be. What's even more frustrating is seeing all the old ports we're paying more to lose every year on newer designs, but modified to fit the new- wave sleek designs (ethernet port or regular USB port with a sliding hinge to keep things sleek-looking till you need the port).

To everyone wondering about why they would not include a connector that costs almost nothing: Because that means there is no traditional audio section on the motherboard. You're losing the headphone jack and a whole bunch of extra circuitry, including capacitors and the digital to analog converter, lots of components. This makes for a lot of saved space on the board, allowing them to make it smaller and for more cost savings than just the connector. Bluetooth audio does everything through software and doesn't require the physical hardware to power a pair of drivers. Yes, there is room for a daughterboard, but that increases the costs A LOT. Having a whole 'nother board done greatly increases the costs. It is cheaper just to get a cheap off the shelf finished product like that dongle and include it; this also allows them the flexibility of including it or not including it depending on the market the laptop is being distributed in. Personally, I would have gladly paid the extra $4, and don't like this trend, but the reasons are understandable when you look at it from an engineering and cost standpoint.
