On this week's episode of The Sitch, Whitney English is chatting with Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Amylee Amos of the Amos Institute about implementing The Bredesen Protocol - a type of "Alzheimer's diet" aimed at slowing and reversing cognitive decline.
Amylee shares her advice for optimizing brain health through diet, exercise, and other lifestyle interventions such as brain training. She also discusses her thoughts on supplementation for Alzheimer's patients including fish oil and CoQ10.
Amylee also explains the genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease such as APOE 4 status and how a mildly ketogenic, plant-based diet may stave off cognitive decline.
Skip ahead for the following topics:
9:54 fasting/time-restricted eating
10:50 - APOE 4
14:35 - how to test ketones
16:52 - general recommendations for brain health
18:53 - fish oil supplements
23:12 CoQ 10
For more on The Bredesen Protocol, get Dr. Dale Bredesen's book, "The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline": amzn.to/2FtQ4fU

Dr. Bredesen’s protocol supports, and is supported by, Dr Terry Wahl’s protocol for autoimmune disorders (esp. MS). I have been following the Wahl’s plan for a few years. I am not exaggerating when I say that the mental fog suddenly lifted one day. I’m 66 and I’m considering returning to the workplace.

I’m 63 and have one APoE4 allele. Have been on Bredesen protocol for 3 years now as prevention. My mother and grandmother had Alzheimer’s so my risk is high. Whatever memory issues I felt I had post menopause are gone now.

@Linda Blackberry how do u suggest I get my mother on this protocol? She lives in VA.
@lindablackerby9819
@lindablackerby9819 2 года назад
@@tgreen8946 You have to go to the Apollo Health website and get in contact with them. Their client support can tell you how to search for a doctor in your Mom’s area who is trained in the protocol. The unfortunate thing is that they will tell you that you have to join the program ($75 a month) in order to begin your search for doctors who are treating patients with this protocol. (You do the search on their platform where you can see all practitioners in your area and be in contact with them. But you can quit it at any time also.

My husband just found out he has the apoe4 also, I found a dr in our area that is certified to use the redes en protocol, on his website it says that you have to belong to the Apollo health. Is that so?
@lindablackerby9819
@lindablackerby9819 2 года назад
@@sandrabargerhuff6421 Yes, that is how it works. At first to belong to the site, it was $75 a month and this means you are in the ReCode protocol. Which is what I did. But they launched PreCode last year for people who are doing the protocol as prevention (not having cognitive issues yet (or ever hopefully). So I switched to that which is $35 a month. But I had to have my Bredesen doctor document that I was appropriate for PreCode. So not sure how it works now - if you have to sign up for the full $75 first, select a doctor, and then they can document that you are prevention only (usually by your cognition test score) and you switch to $35 a month? The reason for having to join Apollo health is that it is the tool where all your health history sits, any and all tests results they do, and it uses its platform’s algorithm to help focus treatment etc. Apollo Health site also has all the resources for you to use such as the Keto diet guidelines and recipes, etc. If you join to get started and then decide it’s not for you, you can quit at any time. I sound like an advertisement! Don’t mean to . Hope that helps.

I am so interested in this. Have been reading all I can on Dr. Bredesen's ReCODE protocol and it's so exciting. My mom is 98 and is probably in the final few weeks or months of Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsons. She is totally unable to do anything for herself, and communication is so difficult for her and us. Mom has very little comprehension. Have watched her go from a incredibly independent person to her present state. I will not go down this road for myself if I can prevent it. I had my genetics tested with 23&me and do not have the APOE4 gene from either parent. I know this doesn't make it clear sailing and I will do whatever it takes. Thanks for your excellent video. with

Joe Rogan used to warn about his experiment with eating anchovies to get the correct oils for optimal health. For a long time he could not figure out why he was feeling so bad. Bredesen protocol - almost exactly the OPPOSITE of what dieticians have prescribed in the past. Yeah, there's overlap with some veggies - but the Bredesen emphasis is on KETOSIS - which is low carb AND FATS. Dieticians have been all about high carbs and low fats.

Can you please clarify her statement that APOE4 leads to a 90% risk of dementia? That does line up with my research. While the risk is certainly high, it’s more like 50-70% which makes a huge difference and lends support to the idea that lifestyle changes can have a positive impact. 90% sounds close to certainty.

Funny how the guest mentions fats ( healthy ). I've long suspected that healthy fats are an important component in the plant based diet yet there are Vegan doctors out there ( John Mcdougall, Caldwell Esseltyne, Jeff Novick) who are very anti fat including plant fats. You can see why there is so much confusion on this topic.

I think it depends on the purpose of the diet and how sick the person is. For example, Dr Esselstyn's diet (no oils) was developed for patients who had no surgical options left for heart disease and were basically left to die. It also depends on how well you can digest and metabolize saturated fat. I don't think the dietician did a good job of explaining that part of the diet.
@dana102083
@dana102083 5 лет назад
@@richhahn2443 im positive its because they want patients at their site. Leaving out just enough. But also information nerds to be layered. For me it took a frw months on keto before i got rid of canola. Now i wint buy anything with it at all. But she mentioned healthy polyunsaturated oils and didnt mention omegas at the same time which would have helped the discussion. Cheers

Nice video but this should apply to everyone for overall health and not just Alzheimer prevention. Unfortunately, this kind of eating is expensive and takes much more time to prepare as for many often it is just easier to buy a ready-made processed meal. But then again, spend the time and money to be healthy is a lot better than spending the time and money on doctor visits and medicines. I think the jury is still out on a plant-based diet being the solution. I think there are just as many out there pushing for a high fat meat-based diet. But either way, HFCS, simple sugars and processed foods should definitely be reduced, if not removed and work for a balanced diet without grains. Two POVs to consider, Robert Lustig & Mark Sisson.

There is an alternative to eating fifteen servings of phytochemical-rich veggies when you get old and scared. The alternative is to eat a decent diet starting when you're a kid. Remember Granny? "Eat your veggies, it'll put colour in your cheeks." "Yeah, but Granny, I don't WANT green cheeks!" Oils and fats are highly processed foods, so no wonder they are considered bad. But fats naturally contained in plant foods, in moderation and if you're not suffering from heart disease, are more conducive to a good balanced diet. I'm confused about the fish thing and this constant necessity to eat the rainbow?! That can make things expensive and complicated for most and so much more confusing than whole plant based foods with no added oil. Butyrate comes from the result of eating plant fibre and omega essential oils are much better taken in their parental form LA and ALA, rather than as the non essential EPA/DHA If these are not already rancid before they enter the body, they definitely are as soon as they are ingested. They're fine in very cold deep water fish, but not at 37 degrees centigrade. The brain is flooded with a super high dose of rancid oil that it has to deal with. Plus, it only requires DHA in very small amounts. Anthropologists link the huge growth in human brains at around 800,000 years ago to the further development of our amylase enzymes and cooking tubers. The brain is a massive glucose consumer, which is it's preferred source of energy and widely available. I also don't get the hour of exercise a day, plus being active...necessary if you're tanking a lot of calories from oil, but is that sustainable and safe? Please don't get me wrong, I'm not an expert and this is just my point of view. I'm a 57 year old plant based male and have followed this way of eating for around 7 years after doing a year of 5:2 fasting. Which was great, but unsustainable for me at the time as I was cycling to work each day and kept forgetting to eat enough on the feast days. I'm a big fan of this channel and thanks for a really interesting interview!

The sweet flavor has become such an integral part of our food that it takes time to drop it. I spent 6 months in China- one thing I noticed… Nothing was sweet, not even birthday cake. I never thought it possible, but now I even drink coffee black (with a little coconut oil🙃)

100% in agreement. I can imagine what they'll do with this information. Plus, they are playing with your DNA. You'd have to have 100% compliance with every individual in the world to get true genetic markers. They've changed mine 3 times because of more individuals using 23 and they say bla bla bla. How many companies and/or individuals do we trust anymore. Power in the wrong hands is very seductive.

Well done ladies, one thing I was offended by was the remark about not needing the “Almighty Physician” you can do this alone, altho that may be true, Alzheimer’s is a very serious disease, and giving people the impression that they can solve it themselves is a bit egotistical and naieve. Sorry don’t be hurt, other than that you are both awesome.

I think what she was saying is that the most promising treatments for preventing and treating Alzheimer’s are lifestyle treatments, things we can do, not in pill form. I wasn’t offended by her comment at all. I felt empowered. I am a carrier of 2 APOE4 genes, a female, and my maternal grandmother and my mother have had it. Knowing that there is solid research out there that indicates that preventing this is in MY hands is huge. I don’t want to need a doctor, I want to be able to do this myself. My mom is suffering from Alzheimer’s and there is truly not much they can do for her-the doctors have admitted to her that if you are looking for a medical intervention to cure this, there just isn’t one. Her doctors have said it is all about lifestyle with this disease. So we are working on her lifestyle and have hope to slow it down, and I am doing everything I can as a woman in my early 40’s to stop this disease in its tracks for myself.

Bloodwork, brain scans and much more - double blind studies being done- so MANY people are not just arresting … but REVERSING the dementias. It’s real … and exciting. It’s too late for my dear mother- who passed 2013 - the longest & most difficult of ‘goodbyes’. I would suggest to anyone to start with Bredesen’s book … then do more research, google everything … RU-vid doctors like Perlmutter, MD or Berg, DC or Lustig, MD +++. Whatever one can do for improvement - or - prevention. My best to you . Robin

Can you please clarify her statement that APOE4 leads to a 90% risk of dementia? That does line up with my research. While the risk is certainly high, it’s more like 50-70% which makes a huge difference and lends support to the idea that lifestyle changes can have a positive impact. 90% sounds like a death sentence.
