The leaves are coming down-coming down fast-and we are way behind on clean up and even mowing, as the grass isn't yet dormant for the season. So we're throwing on our backpack blower before we jump onto our John Deere 1025R tractor with the Protero Material Collection System. See just how well it performs, even under absolutely NOT ideal circumstances.

I'll give you credit; you are a patient and persistent man. After watching the video I was glad I had purchased a AGRIFAB pull type vacuum chipper. Clogs when mowing rare and capacity probably three times greater. And the other plus is it can chip a two inch limb. The down side is another engine to maintain and it's a tow behind. The biggest plus is my vegetable garden loves the chips and mulch!!!

Leaf picking can be enjoyable with a collection system, but the exhaust can be somewhat frustrating at times. I found a solution by attaching a 90° copper fitting to the end of the exhaust pipe to turn the exhaust up and away from the front of the tractor. It stops the blowing of debris and keeps my 54 snow blower from getting black. Just 2 small sheet metal screws does the trick.

For releasing the ducting hose: Check out McMaster-Carr for quick release clamps for ducts and soft hose. Will save time and effort. The leaves I get in my wooded lot (maple - early, oaks - late) make your yard look like child's play! A tip: don't blow leaves into a pile and then 'mow'. Let the leaves lay randomly scattered and mow before blowing. Reduces clogging! Make blowing out beds and difficult areas your second operation. Sounds counterintuitive and it is, but scattering second-operation leaves randomly replicates thinner random leaf placement. You're mowing the same area twice but without clearing clogging and by maintaining a slow steady pace, believe it or not, the job will take less time and reduce frustration. Twenty years of experience talkin'. Old bull - young bull! Great videos!! I never miss!!

I was torn between the Protero and the Cyclone Rake. In the end I decided on the Cyclone for 1 main reason. I have a lot of area where I need the vacuum hose attachment to and I'd rather run a little Briggs & Stratton motor wide open all day while my tractor just sits there with the engine off than run my tractor wide open all day at a stand still. It was also about 25% less expensive. They're both great units. I probably would have gone with the Protero for the convenience if 50% of my cleaning didn't require the vacuum hose.

I have the Superior Tech 20 bushel 3 point hitch system on my 1025r and love it. Makes picking up leaves very easy. Just like you with wet leaves and grass it will plug but still better and quicker than raking. It has electric dump that makes it nice that you don't have to leave your seat. Keep the videos coming.

I agree with all your starting comments. I share your frustration but it looks so much better for a few hours. My pile gets so big and spread out that I use my loader equipped machine to push together and stack. I fully agree with your JD bag comment. Dealer even told me they would be difficult to empty so I ordered the dump from the seat hopper that works better but has it's own problems.

Great video. I find giving the tunnel a good shake with only the rear PTO engaged often clears out the clog without having to disconnect anything. Agree, PTO should be level when engaged but for dumping I find it more efficient to "bounce" the 3-point a time or two to empty it rather than slamming the breaks. Loosening the 3-point fall damper helps.

I pick up a lot of leaves and large leaves are slow through the system. After I get the leaves out in the open, I use a mumching cover on the deck to chop the leaves in place which reduces volume 5 to 10 times. After mulching, leaves will go through much faster and easier with minimal plugging. This includes grinder systems such advertised commercially. An added benefit of mulching in place is they don't blow easily if you can't get them all picked up immediately.

I wonder if a bypass vent opening, like on house floor vacuums, would help reduce clog by pulling more air after the boot. That plus slowing in deep piles might eliminate the issue. Might be simple fix. At least might make clearing clog without unscrewing hose possible. It is a common feature on dust collectors as well.

@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 2 года назад
More of a volume problem... besides moisture. Shear quantity of wet grass and leaves...maybe I was going too fast, but it helped when I took smaller passes. Moisture and quantity were the culprits. If dry, it would have been much better. I've used this bagger quite a few times. I've had only a couple clogs total prior to this day. Brutal!

A good mulcher takes care of all the clippings and leaves and no need for extra equipment, (extra money) and no need to deal with a pile of clippings and leaves and debris which is another job dealing with a big pile. Thank you for the video. There is a lot of good info in the video, and in the comments! I had a DR Power (not very popular? I never see them mentioned) for a long time. It came with quick disconnect clamps, just 2-3 rubber straps. It also had a separate vacuum hose, which was incredibly useful for cleaning up around bushes and garden beds, leaves blown against wire fencing, or vacuuming up acorns. When I ordered the unit I had no idea just how much I would use the vacuum hose! Downside of it was it was the unit attached at 2 points to the back of the tractor, and had caster wheels. They don't use that design anymore. I got caught a few times along fences, where I had to disconnect the unit to get unstuck. However, any 3-pt hitch system like the protero could get you in to that situation - you mow parallel to the fence, now if you turn left the part handing off the back of the tractor hits the fence. You can't turn right either, as the front of the tractor hits the fence. If you are lucky you just back up until you are past the fence (over a thousand feet in my case, but I was able to just disconnect one pin and drive away). Clogs happened, but were easy to take care of thanks to the quick connect rubber clamps. Unfortunately a few years ago I lost the engine (there is reason they tell you to check the oil every day - stupid mistake on my part), and now have a 1025r, so not sure if I want to repower and adapt to the new tractor, or buy a new unit, leaning towards new unit. although the 3-pt hitch would adapt to the design easily. The vacuum hose isn't exactly a deal breaker, but at least for my property it is a huge benefit. Thanks to a commenter I saw the agrifab which also has a chipper built in. Very appealing! Adding that to my research list. I like the idea of PTO drive, since it means one less engine to maintain, and one less engine to worry about fuel going bad, etc. If the Protero had that option I would likely order one now. Thanks again for your videos! SO helpful, and inspiring.
@jimv7199
@jimv7199 2 года назад
I have the DR. It almost never clogs but doesn't empty nearly as easy as yours. It would be interesting to compare price between the 2. DR is similar to cyclone and agrifab system. Dumps way better than agrifab that my brother in law uses. I believe DR and Brinley system are pretty much the same but I bought DR because a dealer was closer to my house. Down side to DR is it's motor driven not PTO driven, so you have to listen to 2 engines and it's a bit noisy. Perhaps motor driven shredder is why it doesn't clog so easy and I think flex tube from mower to shredder is bigger than your reviewed model.

So is there a decent option for a vacuum/leaf collector that doesn’t require a mower to attach to? If I buy the mower attachments, I won’t be able to afford a separate mower.

@@GoodWorksTractors I have a small hand held blower that I made a small holder for that I keep on my mower. The simpler the better.

You need a spinner knob, really helps with maneuverability in tight places and with loader work. Thanks for all of your videos and info.

You had natural dust abatement. I'd rather take care of a couple of clogs over being covered in leaf dust and dirt.

Agree. One good thing is that I now have a bunch of cheap masks around. I use them for dusty stuff like leaf shredding, and the difference is amazing. Less congestion, no brown boogers, no sneezing and allergy flare ups.

I understand that wet leaves are a difficult situation. To avoid clogs I wonder if just slowing down to give the wet mass time to get through the chute would alleviate the problem. Or is the problem that the leaves are getting hung up on a ridge, bend, constriction, etc. In this case I would rework that restriction. Hope this helps. Cheers!

It's really a matter of the volume of material and it being wet which makes it stick instead of slide through.

Mr. Courtney, went over to the Protero Inc site, did you know they don’t have prices listed? Shame on them. I would imagine for me, I would have to remove the mulching kit, but the site doesn’t say. Then I guess I’d have to purchase some Gator blades. So for now, I’ll stick with my Stihl battery powered blower, as I’m too old for a backpack. But it does the job and I just blow the leaves into the woods, or an area I can just mulch over. I do like your music! I do have a question, I noticed your FEL sits out, uncovered, does it hurt the hydraulics?
@GoodWorksTractors

Yes I believe you'd need to remove the mulching kit...some folks mulch year round. Lots of strategies! Have a great day!
@GoodWorksTractors

Sorry, missed that last question. Yeah, it'll hurt the hydraulics over time. However, it'll take awhile. This will sit outside for a little while, but loader going back on for winter. It'll be inside my garage. Need to clear some space.

I've found when doing leaves, if you blow the leaves in the landscape beds onto the lawn and then try to bag it all up, it's too much for any machine to handle. It's a double thick layer of leaves then and clogs every time. I start out 1st by going with along the perimeter of the landscaped beds with the bagger on. I do the lawn area for about 3 deck widths wide so I have a nice 10-12' open clean grass area. Then I blow out the beds onto that fresh cleaned up grass. And then run the bagger again over the same area and it can handle it no problem. I've also found that when mowing, keep the "clean grass" line on the passenger side of the mower deck and all of the leaves you are mowing up on the drivers side, especially when you are doing half deck-width passes. This allows the leftmost blades to chop up the leaves as they pass from blade to blade in the deck, before they even get to the blower. The leaves that get gobbled up on the rightmost side of the deck only hit 1 blade and then quickly into the blower and their particle size is alot larger, leading to more clogs. In your video, look at 28:18 and you'll see what I mean. Any leaves your gobbling up are primarily coming in from the left-most side of the deck and surely turning into total mush by the time they hit the blower (which is a good thing). Compare to 20:07 and yeah, it's gonna clog. :)
