This channel started out gold standard and somehow broke through the stratosphere into completely unrivalled content. “I ❤️ chromatic enclosures” and the tiny head saying “bebop” in the last video got actual out loud laughs from me.

That lick you're playing at around 4min is one that I use a lot over a dom7 chord! I actually picked that one up by accident trying to learn some of Brian Setzer's more jazzier licks.

Wonderful lesson and an unlimited number of possibilities here. I suppose also one could also do this same technique with other chords and scales types such as melodic minor, diminished, modes and so forth?

hey Jens, thoroughly. enjoying your vids!!! They are a great help. The Lockdown has steered me into new pathways of music. As a "folkie" it was a great discovery to find that chords can actually have more than three notes..:) I am slowly learning about 7ths, flat5's and what havya.. What I notice is that betwee you and other good teachers, there is a ton of vids on chord-forming, harmonies, melodies and so on, but practice material on the thing I struggle with most ...RYTHM...seems hard to find.. ( or maybe I am looking in the wrong places?) [EDIT... I have found quite a bit of intel on comping on your patreon-page..THANKS!!!] Another thing that I find extremely difficult is the notatation of standards in all the realbooks. I am a singer and I know all the classics, Billie Holliday, Sara Vaughn, Frank Sinatra et al. I want to learn to back myself singing these songs. but when i look in the realbooks, I see, -to my untrained eye- strings and strings of chords above the lyrics, seemingly a chord for evry beat. Is there a way to make a vid to shed some light on how to chop (pun intended) these herds of chords into a skeleton for essential backing? Again, thanks for your work, greetz from Groningen

Thank you Lucas! Glad you like the videos 🙂 I do have a video on making chord progressions more simple, maybe search for that?

Great as always Jens! Whenever you transcribe or analyse a melody/harmony of a lick or song, out of interest typically in your mind are you thinking of or referencing chord tones or scale degrees? I suspect both or perhaps differently for melody and harmony?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
Thank you! I tend to think note names and that immediately links me to the interval in the key AND in the chord. In tonal music you need to be aware of both in my experience. The b7 of a V chord in a key is not nearly is powerful a sound as the b7 on the backdoor dominant, so you need to be able to find the b7, but you also need to understand what it sounds like in the context. Does that make (a little) sense?

Great lesson. So much there. I’m sure advanced players can use this without much thought. But, for those who have just bought and finished your ”roadmap” modules, perhaps a “roadmap part 2” is needed. We need Togo slower and step-by-step step. Thanks.

Perhaps that's why jazz players play so fast, they want to explore the arpeggio, but chord changes are so frequent there's not much time to do so.
