Thanks for sharing. My Dad David Barnes was tactician on NZL20

What a wonderful Sailing channel. Really love it, thank you so much! Keep on delivering this enthusiastic vlog with so many insights, great nterviews, great content!
Wake up, and see the whole video on the bed. You sir, know how to develop an idea in such a geek and funny way that makes me always end the videos with a smile on my face. Best episode.
I remember Paul Cayard as Skipper of the Italian team back in 92. On another note would love to see a video on NZL32/38 and the 95 AC. Can’t remember which boat was faster but they were both bullets.
Bruce Farr wanted control of the design & got it. He was considered the rock star designer at the time. A question at the time, after being knocked out of the challenger series, was were the Kiwis sailing this boat faster despite its innovative design warranted? To control the boat, I believe required an infinite and continuous control of mast rake to assist the lack of rudder control. Well in the post campaign review the relationship with the designer, Bruce Farr, and his over riding control was one of the issues that contributed to the loss of the campaign. Its interesting in the next campaign, I recall, a very understated photo in a portable construction site office, a small dingy office, a couple no name designers and Peter Blake. The sailors were given overall control of the design and maybe more control of the campaign itself. It would be interesting to hear from someone who was there. Very cool boat as well. I believe Dennis Conners campaign & the Australians all rushed in to try and copy this boats features but all with had control issues.
Russell Coutts touches on the same points you make Brian in his book (with Paul Larsen) 'Course to Victory'. Farr's attitude (and response) to TNZ's request for design work led to a falling out with Blake.
It's interesting that Sir Pete fell out with Bruce Farr after he went to him to design Steinlager 2. If I recall, that was a sailer driven design as well. Perhaps Farr's ego had become so big...
@@briancavanagh7048 that’s to bad. It was an early campaign and bound to make mistakes. NZ should be proud of their heritage. It would be great to have a museum with a boat from every campaign. I admit the size of the boats makes displaying them expensive. I have a soft spot in my heart for all the old AC boats. Even that poor abandoned Alinghi cat in Valencia.
@@108hindu An old Americas Cup event would be better than putting them in a museum, I think. The ubber bitcoin endowed need only apply to joint this exclusive club. Imagine enough old AC boats in events around the world. Race formats might be racing against other comparable AC boats or fleet races with handicaps. Imagine the shitfest with the owners protests. Actually this has all the ingredients for a great reality show! Wasn’t there some AC boats racing in the Caribbean?
I'm not sure 'beautiful' is the right adjective, Matt. Maybe striking. Maybe... I love these videos- he really has the both subject and delivery nailed down, and that's pretty rare. What a treat!
NZL20 is back in the water as of a couple of day ago. As this was the first time back the water for over 10 years she had to undergo a 30 minute soak test before releasing the travel lift straps. Half an hour later - 100% dry, so the straps came off. NZL20 looks so much better in the water.
Not sure if this has been asked or discussed already but, with what is known about the teams' test boats (Oracle's Mule and the other teams' equivalents) could we see boat classes come out if these smaller foiling monohulls?
that was the first America's Cup in which I watched every race. I thought NZ was easily the best boat out there, but what happened in those last 4 races was very strange.
Greetings, Emanuele- just curious, what boat would that be? Possibly a 12? Seems most of the 12's are spoken for or their whereabouts documented and the IACC boats for various reasons are the AC orphans these days.
I remember that series, the first one i followed, always remembered this red rocket... about the bow sprit...arnt they measured before racing starts...?
Great video. Does anyone know where a video copy of the race could be found where this boat and another had the most epic and awesome downspeed tacking dual? Does anyone remember that race and what the other boat was.
Can anyone explain what he's talking about when he says: "A boat that had proved itself on the water. A boat that was up against an Italian.... (pause)... wait a minute (screeching sound)... But one of the other interesting things...(continues on unrelated topic)" I don't get it... what is he inferring by "a boat that was up against an Italian".... weird
Great to see "New Zealand" down her side. Te Rehutai, has no visible mention of NZ. How much did we pay towards this campaign....? A lot! and each year the visibilty of New Zealand as a brand on the boat diminishes. Now with Dalton looking to sell out to the highest bidder... sadly I'm done with it.
Are you still in New Zealand? I believe the twin hulls of camper from the failed San Francisco are right beside the onehunga southbound motorway off ramp. goo.gl/maps/Ntx4vPcwSiEaoURk6 They’re shrink wrapped in plastic, but you can see through it a little bit and it says camper.
If I were a millionaire, I would bid for this sailboat, without a doubt! Note: BMW must give you a great gift for your bike ... for showing it in the videos; ask for it, don't be shy! 😜😅👍
