To everyone yet to visit UK, A propper "Chippy" that fries in front of the customer like Poppies is the way to go, earn bonus taste points if it's a coastal location, the sea air adds that little something, specially to the appetite.
also with seaside towns like whitby, the one that happens to be nearest is always the best, and the seagulls noise adds +10 to the score. +20 for the salty smell
@@rossgeller_23 people should be made aware that going outside with the seagulls is like going to a bad part of town you're going to get mugged by shite hawkes
@Woolwich Arsenal crap chicken in a box places are taking over because of the price of fish and chips. Let's face it so many people want quantity instead of quality , look at the freeloading greedy people putting ketchup and mayo on until it's dripping out of the box.
Having good manors costs nothing. The generation of today don't seem to be able to say please or thank you anymore or hold a door open for older people when entering or exiting. Look around at people's tables after they have finished eating and what a mess, they can't even leave the knife and fork straight.
As the story goes,American troops having some down time in Belgium during WW2 were eating super skinny chips there and were so impressed on returning to the States introduced "french fries" there.of course they were too oblivious to remember they had them in Belgium and not France where of course they are known as Pomme Frittes!
Im a shouty man, and I think Americans should stop thinking that they saved the British in WW2..... YOU HELPED and we are grateful, but you didnt WIN..... The Russians WON. In fact the USA were very cowardly by dropping the biggest bomb at the time into Japan twice instead of fighting. Its easy to win if they cannot match your bombs isnt it, but not only that, kill millions of innocent civillians!!!
Chippys have loads of different options on the menu. You don't have to have fish. You can get pies, chicken nuggets, curry rolls, and sausages. My local does burgers in a bun.
She's not wrong as chips and French fries are not the same thing, which is why we use both terms to describe the separate items. While both are made from chipped potatoes, French fries are cut super thin and are more fattening due to having a smaller surface area and a thicker coating of fat, whereas the larger surface area of chips means they have a thinner coating of fat. French fries should be crisp and almost hard, whereas chips are soft.
In the North we don't go in for the fancy lemon on the fish.. Douse it in salt and vinegar, get some curry sauce on the chips, couple of rounds of bread and butter on the side and a good mug of strong builders tea to drink. That's the ultimate fish and chips
That's exactly why i wouldn't go to a chippy past Watford. You have to have lemon, rock salt, white pepper and washed down with a nice cold crisp large glass of white.
Sadly my grandad Poppie passed away last year. But I’d like to say. He was far from rude. That was just his dry sense of humour. If you knew him you would know what a lovely man he was and how kind he was. This was so lovely to watch and hear his voice again. Thank you for this video
@@milliewhite8418I'm guessing you've never really been filmed or been on TV. Thesecond those cameras turn on you forget those types of things. Considering The fact that he was essentially promoting the shop I doubt the servers and owners mind the lack of a single thank you. Also he's speaking real real English, there's no such thing as fake English. English is one of the hardest in language because of the many different influences and phonics rules. Also do you realize how many different countries and nationalities follow the basic English language there are many different varieties of English yet it's still real English. Just because they don't talk exactly like you, or use different contractions such as y'all or ain't doesn't mean they are speaking of fake language. Lighten up my dude! Much love from Mississippi 🇺🇸
@@QWERTYOP80 I'm not a southerner, but I can guarantee you that Poppie's fish and chips are brilliant, and there's another excellent chippie Happy Days in nearby Goulston Street. They are both "proper" chippies, and sell "proper" chip-shop fish and chips.
@@QWERTYOP80 I live in south west and we have great fish and chips. But defo need the curry sauce and mushy peas in there with lots more salt and vinegar
The bit where he pushed the food into his mouth with his knife was my favourite... Though he was obviously trying hard to use his knife and fork European style, so credit where it’s due.
Ginger regardless of politics the UK is still geographically and culturally European even if we’ve left the European Union. People across Europe wield their eating irons the same way we do in Britain, which is different from the USA. www.thekitchn.com/survey-using-your-knife-and-fork-166188 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_utensil_etiquette
@@jameshurley4959 I mean sure why not lol, not sure about mixing mushies with curry but one or the other with rest works, lots of butter to melt around it lol
I don't really like how they portrayed pop in the thumbnail, like he's some angry old man, he's so nice! As well as the Brit is old and grumpy and the American is young and happy on the thumbnail.
Ain’t nothing better then when you actually douse the chips in vinegar and then you take your first bite of the chip and it’s too hot and smoke starts coming out from the mouth 😩😩😩😩
Don't get why everyone says Pop hated him. Seems like they got on well enough and both had a bit of joking back and forth, It's just dry british humour if he really didn't like him he'd have told him to fuck off. it's one of the best chippy's so it's not like they need the advertisement.
Did i hear correctly he said his lived in the UK for 3 years but still calls chips french fries lol in the UK french fries are the skinny chips basically the chips that you get a mcdonalds or kebab takeaways. I love chip shops . Chip shops, Chip shops the one near me is original and what i mean by that is the new fish and chip shops are modernised but original like the one near me as been there for 50 years i think the owner said and his owned it for 40 years up until recently when he sold it but from what ive heard its staying as a fish and chip shop but imo it will never be the same as different people are cooking everything and maybe different supplier. As a child there used to be fish and chip trailers/vans so turn up about 4pm and leave about 7-8pm but they are everywhere in the UK and rightly so as they are amazing.
C S please tell me where i said it was ‘just’ a northern thing? chips and gravy is TYPICALLY associated with the north. look at you living up to the southern softy name crying over chips and gravy
They try. They really try but is it just me that finds all of this stereotypical, almost as if it's an American playing to the British stereotypes? I've never understood if this channel is for brits or Americans. If it is for brits i would love to see more videos of things that we genuinely are interested in such as relevant stories in the uk, our celebrity idols/ shows or anything that isn't so steryptipical. This is just by opinion. Please say if you would disagree otherwise.
I have to admit that as an Aussie who now lives in the UK (and eaten fish and chips both in the north, including Whitby, and the south), I prefer Aussie fish and chips. My local fish and chip shop back home did amazing fish ‘bites’ and the most amazing chips that were crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. Top it off with a potato cake or a dim sim on the side and it was *chefs kiss*. I know ‘chippy’ chips are supposed to be soft and a bit soggy here but I have never quite enjoyed that as much as a crispy chip.
Language involves it’s also our language. The English you are speaking now is not the same English that was spoken 300 years ago even English was heavily influenced by many other languages so nobody actually owns the language or invented it
Those prices jeez, the chippy I work at is £4.50 for a large fish and £3.50 for a small, £2 for a large chips and £1 for peas curry gravy ect. And the food we make isn’t bad either, it’s actually some good quality, not greasy, closely monitored whilst cooked fish and chips. I know how bias I sound here
Where are you from? Do they have Scallops down South? Where I live they do something called scones it's basically two scallops with a piece of fish in the middle, all fried as one like a fish sandwich but the bread is potato..... They're amazing!! How they don't exist outside my area I don't know!
I went to a fish and chip shop near where I live. I’m southern but live up north. My friend suggested a scallop. Which I ordered expecting the seafood scallop. What I got was very disappointing. It was horrible and definitely not fish. I am pretty sure they aren’t a thing down South. Mainly because they’re horrible.
Erm.. an actual seafood "scallop" is button sized. And barely cooked for 2mins before serving! This UK version is a huge slice of potato, cooked, battered and then deep fried :)
Poppie's on Hanbury Streeet! My favourite place for fish and chips in London, and one of the places I must visit after the COVID situation gets better.
Ginger I swear your profile name is named after Rothsteins crazy junkie wife in casino. And if you are, I hope you keep doing what you doing in hope of an overdose. Your based on her so there’s a 98% chance you will and if you don’t everyone you know will.
When you do visit go to a chippy that seems to be a little bit expensive as to the one's you get on the average high Street that sells kebabs and pizzas etc they are not very traditional with the standard of making a good fish batter and a good potato that's been nicely double fried into a lovely chip.
@@pyeltd.5457 Oddly enough, Poppies is just around a corner, it started out like any other family-run chippy, and is still run by the same family. Just because it's got nice decor doesn't change the quality of the food, and if you don't like the decor you can always have a takeway; indeed, it does a roaring trade in takeaways. Besides, many "council chippies" are terrible - there are six in my area, but only one of them is any good.
I’ve never heard a gherkin being called a wolly before 😂 I love it. Won’t try it at my local chippy coz they’d think I was being a cheeky bam. When Jeff called them french fries it looked like pops wanted to gee him a skelp 😂 love a good chippy. My local is somewhat famous, as it was in the movie Gregory’s girl. I live in Cumbernauld in Scotland, so I know the film won’t be that well heard of around the world but within the area I am, it’s a famous chippy. Also outlander is filmed where I stay too. And now I want a chippy
.... As a American i was so confused what this was... before i watched this vid. All we have are french fries and grilled fish, sometimes french fries dip with ice creamm. MWHAHHAHA
Ginger oh for christ sake just SHUT UP I SEE YOU BEING A MISERABLE LITTLE BITCH EVERYWHERE YOU CLEARLY HAVE A PROBLEM GO SORT IT OUT AND COME BACK WHEN YOU HAVE CHEERED UP
You NEED a whole bottle of ketchup with a massive pile of crispy, fluffy chips, thick crispy layer of batter on the fish, a saveloy, sausage in batter, gherkin, scrapings, ice cold coke and 3 hours to eventually be able to move. Best comfort food in the World.
@@anaiswood2400 and why cant you have the chips? Im sure there isnt any meat in there. A vegan can have chips you know. ANYWAY... veggie or vegan cos like.. dont wanna eat animals cos its life...... carrots are life.... parsnips are life.... the life of plants...... PLANTS AND TREES ARE ALIVE JUST LIKE COWS AND PIGS.... going vegan/vegetarian means nothing, you are still eating deceased LIFE!!... a carrot died when you cooked it just like a cow died for its meat. What makes eating plants and vegetables okay?? Its still eating 'Life' you know.
Helloweener been vegan for 4 years now i cant imagine going back even for one meal would be too weird... 🤷🏽♀️you make a fair point, it’s not a religion but i certainly don’t think ill be eating meat again🤷🏽♀️
CrazyInWeston it’s not about ‘life’ it’s about a being that’s can feel pain/ have nervous systems and suffer ect, - pigs have intelligence of toddlers! And cows grieve when their babies are taken away.. There’s no evidence to suggest plants can feel pain or pleasure ect..
I’m British and I live 20mins away from Poppy’s and tbh it’s not the best not by far. The issue with Poppy’s is that it’s in the middle of brick lane witch is a tourist attraction in London where tourists will go to try fish and chips but it’s not real authentic fish and chips and the price of it is disgusting and that’s to get you tourists to buy it. If you are going to visit London or the uk try fish and chip shops outside the tourists areas as you will find better quality and a better price.
