It's not a great song. However, it was the right song at the right time in the right place. Sometimes that happens. It ended up being more than the sum of its parts.
It is overrated imo. And I think Kurt Cobain's tragic death helped make the band popular. At a certain point Kurt no longer wanted to sing this song. Please check out the song 'King' by Marillion 👊🏻 🙏. It's mostly about Kurt (and Elvis) and the struggle of being famous. A masterpiece for sure, both musically and lyrically!!!
That is an understandable review, the song itself while being legendary is just a nice refreshing listen. Nirvana will always be my personal favourite band, not because of this song but because of Kurt Cobain and his writing which speak to people on many levels regarding mental health, depression, and self worth. The first time I heard this song I thought it was going to be another boring repetitive cliche, but I was shocked with the messy instrumentation and harsh vocals that all came across as incredibly genuine. The lyrics of this song while not meaning anything very specific, are well written and emotional because from certain mindsets, they are very real and relatable.
imo whatever feeling stringing SLTS lyrics together gives you is what it means & that’s why it resonated with millions of people. also looking at the lyrics I can kinda see themes of apathy, frustration, even drugs in this song so the lyrics do make sense in its own unique way 😂 SLTS was just the right song in the right place considering the time frame and the way things were when it got released.
I think the lyrics here are more opaque because the are emotional statements, not literal ones. It is like Kurt is using words as story boards instead of coherent sentences. The song is about sexual frustration and feeling disconnected from society. You will notice the hellos vs how lows. This is a report of rejection. He said hello and got rebuffed. Ultimately, that chorus ends with the repeated phase, 'a denial' where it didn't exist before. This song is a pistache of emotion from a disenfranchised kid trying to fit in at a party. I give the lyrics an 8. 5.
I appreciate this song. I have definitely overheard it. I think your music expert got it right , when he called it an ear worm. My favorite Nirvana song is "Heart Shaped Box".

Kurt basically just wrote down whatever was in his head at the time. This led to some really good and artistic lyrics and also some... not so good lyrics. But something that Kurt was always great at was songwriting. The man made constant ear worm songs, to the point that his songs are still getting played on the radio 30 years later. This song however isn't the best of Nirvana, lyrically or musically. It isn't even the best song on Nevermind. However, it is a great song and just a fun song to jump around to, what Kurt intended.
I think it's arguably the greatest rock song of all time. Not even a top ten favorite Nirvana song for me. Nirvana has a lot of songs that I enjoy more than this. But when it comes to sheer rock ferocity combined with melody songcraft levels unheard of since The Beatles - this is it. Still - I can name 5 or 6 songs off of Nevermind alone that I enjoy more than this (maybe even 7 or 8 - that entire album is untouchable). One other, the SLTS video was such a huge, huge part of the cultural revolution Nirvana ushered in. If you haven't watched the official video you must go and do so now - it defined fashion and attitude for the 90s. Other songs by Nirvana to review: In Bloom, Lithium, Drain You, On a Plain, Aneurysm, School, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Unplugged), Dumb, Scentless Apprentice, Milk It
the writing for Nirvana was always good but I can't stand to hear him sing it just sounds horrible to me. I bought this cassette when it came out and I tossed it in the garbage two weeks later because I couldnt stand the sound of his voice. I grew up with Bruce Dickenson, Freddy Mercury , Ann Wilson from Heart so it was hard to listen to.
It is overrated honestly. It's just not a good song. No meaning, just a bunch of random lines. Why it's so popular is because of the timing. Hair metal was all over the place and this brought grunge to the forefront of mainstream
Grundge for the most part is garbage, basically a bunch of junky homeless punks got real real real lucky. Pearl Jam is amazing and the rest I can take it or leave it.
One of the most overrated songs by one of the most overrated bands in history. 7.8 is considerably high considering some other songs you ranked close to this that are far far superior.
I was 19 when this song came out. I heard it so much on the radio that I was sick of it within a month. This is the only song by Nirvana I can stand to listen to at all. The Weird Al version is much more enjoyable. I think the band is one of the most overrated bands in history. Even worse, they ushered in a decade of awful music from bands trying to copy them. Therefore, they are basically the reason I never listen to the radio anymore. I will never understand how something so mediocre can be considered "legendary".
@@Wither81 Rush, Eagles, 80s Metallica, Van Halen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, Elton John, Deep Purple, Queen. Frank Zappa. Plenty of others, but those are the ones that popped into my head.
@@wm-nu1yf Ok nice. I’m not gonna bash on any of them but I just saw a few there I would rate pretty low. But you love what you love and that’s how life is. Keep on rocking!
@@Wither81 Some people like what they are "supposed" to like. I doubt those people would even be watching a channel like this. Other people's opinions of "greatest" would likely be very different from each other's. What one person loves, someone else might detest. There's nothing at all wrong with that. Even with the bands I mentioned, I usually disagree with what the majority opinion of their "best" album is.
@@wm-nu1yf I think most people here are music lovers, I know I am. Some music that hit the charts in the early days were impossible not to hear. I’ve always been more of a ”discover it yourself” type of person. Many of my fav bands are well known tho. Sabbath, Nirvana, Metallica, Beatles for example.
