You can visit it, in Sri Lanka, I went last year on my honeymoon. It's not really a city though, it's a royal palace built on a huge rock, and the surrounding area directly below is a landscaped "garden" with ingenious water features and evidence of scattered pagodas. The ancient Sri Lankan's were very clever with their engineering projects, and were very proud of their system for building lakes and controlling the water flow through canals. These canals fed fields, baths and beautiful water features. You can't miss cycling around the ancient royal grounds of Pollunaruwa - check it out.
@@therezabjorklund353 just ask your hotel/host to book you a taxi. Best to get there very early because it gets very busy quickly. There are walkways all around the side of the rock feature. It gets very hot and often you will be exposed to the sun. So if you get there late you will be stuck in the queue in the sun. Bring enough water. It's very high and lots of steps. But the palace ruins at the top, and the views are incredible. It really is incredible, and a must-see if in Sri Lanka. But I think I preferred Polonnawura because it wasn't as crowded, and there is more shade, and bicycles 😎
Arthur C Clarke, who lived most of his life in Sri Lanka, used this wonderful place as the centrepiece of his fictional city of Taprobane in "The Fountains Of Paradise". His Taprobane is, almost to the last detail, identical to Sigiriya.
A fantastic composition of the old world embellished by the murals of the beautiful women of that era. Not to mention what problems they have to face in the construction they seem to surpass all our expectations. It looks like there is a chapter of our history that has been forgotten. Thank you for bringing this enlightened video!
Have climbed this via the steps . Amazing. At the time myself and my wife were astounded that this place was not a world famous monument like the pyramids. By the way Sri Lanka's beautiful and there is much more to see and do if your ever lucky enough to go there.
Someone should just model this place into a video game. No additional design work needed, just take an amazing location that not many people know of. And present it to millions as an interactive environment. The real kicker will be once they learn it's real place.
How beautiful and amazing a structure. Thank you for drawing attention to these wondrous sites that get such little coverage that most if us never even knew this existed.
I went there in 1980, but didn't go all the way to the top. The metal stairs were old, rickety, rusted and began to pull away from the rock. I was only part way up and it was getting near sundown, so I was prudent and came down myself. The stairs in the video seem to be a more secure replacement. There are many wonders to visit in Sri Lanka, I spent almost a month there and only scratched the surface. Thanks for another wonderful video!
The stairs that go from the huge lion monument to the palace were pretty sketchy even in 2019. When I think back to that journey I feel a bit sick. I'm just glad we got there before the crowds.
Yes, Sigiriya is spectacular, but so are other ancient sites in central Sri Lanka. I highly recommend visiting the Dambulla Cave Temples and Polowarnua as well.
It features in Arthur C Clarkes sci-fi book "The Fountains of Paradise". He imagines Sri Lanka as an island on the equator called Taprobane, this site then becomes the base of a space elevator. The monks play a part in the story too.
Hi. This is a most amazing place. I have seen several videos on Sigiriya but you showed some details I have NOT seen before. GREAT JOB with your presentation, and thank you sharing with all of us!
You are most welcome to visit! Sri Lanka has everything from ancient ruins to wildlife to scenic mountains to sun soaked beaches to a fantastic array of foods. Plus Sri Lankans are famous for our hospitality and with the economic downturn a bargain. Visiting now will help our economy too. 😅
Thank you for all the research you do! I honestly would never know about these places if it wasn't for you, so I appreciate your work! Great informative video like always. Keep it up!
Absolutely fascinating. Wow, the power of these ancient Kings is nothing short of remarkable. Once again, my kingdom for a time machine. Thanks AA. TNQ
@@AncientArchitects Yes my friend, and thank you. I have seen this site before, but you always manage to find a fresh angle from which to view these magnificent places. Your enthusiasm and intellect delight those of us who recognize the special nature of these enigmatic locations. I am always grateful for your input. Always. TNQ
Something about the intro always signals the video is going to be epic, well researched and thought-out, and you never, .. *NEVER* Disappoint, - Great Video, i always wonder how they got all the materials to the top, of course, time and patience is key - Here in Scotland we have similar things that catch this vividness in the imagination, many defensive positions span the ages, from the time of the first settlers there seems to be things present that were purposely built yet forgotten, it does capture the imagination - This Mountain monster (Lion Rock) reminds me of these efforts, of course the higher ground would have been very much sought after after a survival epic as well, cheers Matt - Brilliant as always!
I am elderly housebound on limited resourses. I am very appreciative of your channel, as I am able to view our world through your eyes. Maybe you could do a video about Samaipata
This is quite true because thanks to this vidio people draw conclusions abaut places they have never seen , the vidio shows quite clearly the history and how it was created . I believe that everyone who has seen this vidio is amazed by this story
Awesome!! Whatever happened to the history we were taught at school? I hated it as it was so boring. But this!! WOW. Thank you AA and the internet. Amazing!!
I've noticed that all around the world there are great many megalithic structure's like this that looks like they were superheated and melted, leaving a few clues as to what they once we're. And also structure's that were hit by a force so great it scattered pieces all around
THANKS! As always, I appreciate your show! Atop that height & upon that gigantic granite platform, with the view of the Sun, as it rise & set...I can only imagine the subtle energy that's emitted there. Again, Thanks for all of your shows & great images. ...& May you be at peace!
It's historical fact that the citadel and other fortifications of Sigiriya was constructed by king Kasyapa of the Morian dynasty of Anuradhapura - this is supported by inscriptions, poetry and historical records. It's also historical fact that Buddhist monks used the site as a monastery before and after the reign of king Kasyapa. We "locals" don't believe that it was constructed by Kubera, the lord of wealth or whatever you said. It's an unpopular theory propagated by Indian pseudo historians in support of the Ramayana theory. Just like this guy is using it to propagate the ancient architect theory. To be fair though, I think there's a definitely a speck of truth in the ancient alien theory, as well as Sigiriya being a site of religious and geographical significance from before the island was Buddhicised, but its greatest glory should be reserved for the citadel of Sigiriya, which is a wonder of the ancient world. You guys should look into Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) instead, it's another mysterious peak/mountain in Sri Lanka that is so mysterious that there's definitely something "alien" to it. ;)
Lovely idea to just put photos to music for a minute at the end. Just brilliant. Allows us to really feel Really wonder Really reflect Really appreciate Good music, too; I noticed at the very end that the blend of melodies matched my thoughts and emotions/intuition. THANK YOU.
Hey Matt I'm not sure if you are aware of another fellow travelers channel run by Praveen Mohan in India but he has done an absolutely amazing breakdown of this place. What you showed is amazing enough but I encourage you to go have a look at what Praveen has to say about this place. I won't spoil it by going into too much detail here but this place is FAR more interesting than a place on top of that plateau ,I think people will be stunned by what is actually going on here. When you see what Praveen has to say about this place and the engineering that went into it,it's positively jaw dropping. It's hard to believe this is just about a single kings retreat. Praveen Mohan is an absolutely brilliant researcher of ancient India. Although I do disagree with him about several things,as he does propose contact in ancient times with aliens ,that should not deter people from hearing everything the man has to say. He's a brilliant guy and he has shown me many a revelation about ancient India. Great as always Rich B.
6.39 the flower of life. Sacred geometry. The building blocks of the universe. Highly advanced. Imagine the good times this king had playing god. This is a brilliant channel!
That was excellent! Thank you for your videos. I watch them often. It’s 6:30 am. I couldn’t have found more interesting content to watch and learn about while having breakfast. Cheers mate!
This was the epidemy of my trip to Sri Lanka! Magnificent view at sunset! Arthur C Clarke described Sirigya in his book en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountains_of_Paradise. If you go to Sri Lanka, climb Adams Pick too! (Which I missed, sadly...)
This is one of my Favorite sites. I wish i had the $ to travel there!. I heard the water gardens could be flooded to keep enemies out. The water would mix in with the moat letting the gators in to attack people & horses trying to swim across. Isn't that just amazing?!
Wow this is cool! I've never heard of this place. Kinda reminds me of the Fist of the First Men from Game of Thrones. While the Fist wasn't a city but they did use the mountain top as a defense point.
I am a Sri Lankan and this was built by The Architecturer called Mayadhana who built the world's first flying machine called "Dhandu Monara" to the Greatest king RAWANA who ruled the Sri lanka 5000 years ago , king Kashyapa just foundd it when he was searching for a place to hide from his brother as he killed his father to be the king. Sri lanka is not just a land it's way more than that , we have a Star gate and some sthupa just like the giza pyramids. come on you all are welcome to the paradise island , and the best thing is that we Sri Lankans known as the best hospitality ppl in the world. you can spend your dollors very well here come and enjoy cheers if anybody wants I'd love to help you with guidance
Another world wonder I've never even heard mentioned by any other historical researcher. Thank you again for making me realize I have to see more of the world.
He committed suicide while he was cornered in the rock when his brother came back with an army to take back power,at least thats what i remember from my childhood stories
