A weekly newsletter of home and interior inspiration, delivered to your inbox: themodernhouse...
Chip shops and Big Brother might seem like unexpected references to find on an interiors moodboard - but not for Alex Holloway. The co-founder of Holloway Li, a London-based design consultancy, drew upon high-street and pop-culture visuals when designing his home in Highbury. The apartment, which he shares with his partner, Elle Parmar Jenkins, the furniture dealer behind Goods In, is a testbed for some of his most experimental ideas, which include having a bathtub in the living room…

It would have been great to see a floorplan. Quite difficult to understand the space from the limited angles that we're shown in the video.

I read elsewhere that they hadn’t originally intended to make everything open plan and the bath was intended to be in the bedroom in that corner. By the time they realised what beautiful natural light they could get if they took down the bedroom walls, the plumbing had been done so they decided to just go with it. It’s quirky, but fun. As for the resale option, I’m sure it would not take much effort to reinstate the walls if required. Would love to have seen a longer video, and a floor plan would be great. Love your channel Modern House - such interesting places so full of personality. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Usually, when an architect is interviewed he or she will feel the need to heap philosophical layer upon layer for why a design was made. But in this case it felt, refreshingly so, that they made decisions because the just liked how it looked.

Honest vanity? I think I prefer the philosophical justifications for BS design it’s easier to make fun of. Instead I just pity them for being as shallow as a tinker’s bath (that’s in the living space full exposed to the neighbours’ view).

It reminds me of living in a cockroach-ridden loft in BK as a student a few years ago. It doesn’t feel comfy to me, but they seem like a lovely couple, and I love their take on how they see their sense of style as constantly evolving

A bit harsh. There are some really nice elements, in my opinion. I do think the Brooklyn loft idea is overdone and a bit fantastical. Having lived in a real one, it’s not that great - almost all of them are poorly converted factories with awful management. But in theory it’s a massive space at a great price point which sort of meets a few modernist standards. Their attitude is really cool and to be honest I’m bored of chandeliers and chinoiserie, even if I’m a bit cynical of the loft ideal.

Love the kitchen but the bath, out in the open living area? I am no prude but it would bother me if I were watching TV or eating/cooking and someone was taking a bath. The novelty would soon wear out pretty quick.

@@carolz5090 they have a separate shower so it's cool i think. a bathroom can have two purposes: simple washing yourself and toiletry, the other is chilling (reading a book in the bath, listening to music, taking a bath together etc). so they have two areas for the two functions. this is more like the equivalent of your outdoor pool, rather than a regulat bath.

Can everyone calm down. They didn’t design the space with an intention to flip it. It’s their home and they like it so that’s all that matters. Is it conventional? Absolutely not. But glad to see some different design ideas instead of a white box with scandi wood.

I am about to remove wall between my two tiny bedrooms to open up the space and all my friends tell me I am devaluing the property. If I sell I can put up a stud wall in a better place from where brick wall currently is. Or perhaps next owner will enjoy the open space as much as I expect to.....

I’d like to see their bedroom. I love the stainless steel kitchen and dining table set and shower screen! I think the bathtub has taken on a very central spot in the room …. Which makes it the main feature of that room . It takes away from the beauty of other objects, like that stunning dining table. Maybe have some sort of screen in front of it when guests come over (like that resin screen?) or maybe cover it with a wooden box that serves as an extra table? I don’t know? 🤷‍♀️. It’s just too “in your face”. I love the concept though , for tiny house living, you have to think outside the box! Which this guy did!!

It is just a shame that so many people (like myself) invest in our homes, in this case apartments, and yet the UK government have not even addressed or suggested the abolishment of the dreadful 'lease hold'. Thus, only the freeholder of the lease continues to benefit long term from all our hard work and financial investment.

A while ago, I wanted a bathtub in my bedroom, and not the bathroom. So I booked a city break at a hotel that had one. I turned back home and put the bathtub in the bathroom. While interesting, it's not at all practical to have a bathtub elsewhere than the designated place, aka bathroom. Exception might be an outdoor one.

Funny, because I have came in the UK and then moved in London but other than during 4.5 years of living there I just paid high rents and had not even a start into doing architecture, as a European citizen, graduated in architecture. Plus the constant unsafety of their system and the gross unethical behavior of all their "best" recruitment offices, that put you on the streets repeatedly.. Saying that this is how "things are" £!!!! I also have had to take 2x loans from banks, first in my lifetime, as they constantly were saying that they have jobs, but none has been ever offered to me. I have received underpaid jobs for short periods of time and unannounced lay offs, plus I have paid in total with my husband around 60k in rents and taxes for the last 6 years. Never been offered a job in architecture, just fussed and impacts!!! Funny how this video is showing a whole other world than the reality!!!!
