As an architectural house, The Sandcastle by Ponting Fitzgerald Architects champions the creative and structural benefits of concrete. Inspired by a sandcastle and built by Bannan Construction, the sculptural building is firmly established within its coastal context.
Built within the inner harbour zone of Point Chevalier, The Sandcastle is situated directly above the shore. Sitting on a bluff of land that resembles a sand dune in constitution, the three-storey concrete home is conceived as an architectural house that naturally extends from the surrounding landscape.
A house tour of The Sandcastle evidences its status as an architectural house, with the form of the building representing a playful yet sophisticated interpretation of a sandcastle. Concrete plays an important role in realising the shape of the home, offering endless formal possibilities in its pre-set, liquid state.
Ponting Fitzgerald Architects crafts a dynamic materiality that withstands the erosive coastal climate. Although the concrete exterior interacts with the salt, wind and water of the environment - gracefully expressing the passage of time through a weather-beaten appearance - The Sandcastle maintains its structural integrity, establishing itself as an architectural house embedded in the landscape.
With the help of Bannan Construction, Ponting Fitzgerald Architects creates an architectural house that is both rugged in nature and refined in form and concept. The Sandcastle stands as an enduring aspect of the coast; a solid piece of architecture, made in recognition of place.

I don’t really resonate with the design here, but the fact that the children were involved in the construction is such a beautiful thing! As they said, this house would likely be not sold, and it will be a beautiful token to them and the future generations. Such a heartfelt idea! Absolutely love it.

I can honestly say this is the first concrete structure I have seen that doesn't feel like Brutalist Architecture. The ample glazing and tropical setting certainly help with that, but I do agree that the formwork and human scaling of the details really do create a warmth and hominess I have not experienced with other concrete buildings. And as a Californian, I certainly appreciate that it's also 99% wildfire proof! Well done team!

Inspiring. Like how the wood interiors mimic the wood formed cast concrete. Quite an achievement.

I appreciate how solid it appears and am sure actually is. I would have opted for lighter and more colorful finishes instead of black and charcoal on painted walls and furnishings, but that may be because I'm losing my vision.

Black is such an interesting choice. It’s sometimes imposing, but when used tastefully like in this case, it feels very natural and fitting of the natural environment. Takes a skilled architect to really get it right and not feel like a “lair,” especially when it’s on a beachfront setting like in this case.

Gorgeous building of course, though I would have thought a sand castle would need to look like an upside down bucket. And if I ever use this much board formed concrete, I'm going to plan to reuse the boards for a deck or shed the size of the house!

Creating environments that were both functional and humane, focused not only on a building's appearance but how it would connect with and enrich the lives of those inside it. Moreover, at its core, his organic design philosophy states that architecture holds a relationship with its time and place. - - Frank Lloyd Wright

Whoever edits these! Beautiful homes, but I never have any conception of space or layout. The shots seem rather arbitrary, cycling without progression between outside, kitchen, bedroom, etc... I lose spacial sense, which is so deeply important in architecture. What does it feel like to move through this house? To experience it the way it is intended, as a guest would entering and taking a look around?

It doesn't look like a sand castle, but it's amazing what you did with the concrete. Please don't tell me you cut down any of those GORGEOUS trees to build there. Overall, it seems kind of "forced" into a place it doesn't belong and the interior seems like a maze you could easily get lost in.

Lovely home, the concrete faux wood is perfect for that environment. I Can't understand why they dont put a few dollars into some landscaping, the fake sheets of grass is really tacky. Honestly, sand or dirt would make it look like a 'sandcastle', the faux just looks cheap.

Concrete House makes sense for lasting forever, look at the Flak Towers in Germany that it's massive thick walls just laughed at the Russians Biggest Howitzer Guns firing at it for hours, the Russians gave up on shooting at the Flak Tower 3.5 meter thick walls.

I feel the structure itself is a bit oversized and heavy; but what I really feel is off is the decor. Dark, dated in places, without much personality or individual feel, and with little relation to the environment and the style of the house.
