This was a tricky quiz. The automatic transmission was first invented by a Canadian steam engineer, Alfred Munro, and patented in 1921 but it never went into commercial development. Two Brazilians, Araipe and Lemos, came up with the first hydraulic system prototype in 1932. It was sold to General Motors and became the Hydramatic, introduced in 1939 for 1940 model year Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs. It had an impressively long life, still being used in Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars until 1967.

nom pas du tout la vrais boite auto moderne est un injenieurs francais alsacien gaston fleischer , ha l amerique pourquoi les voitures americaine ont des boites automatiques , car en 1941 avec la guerre japonaise , l etat a mit son veto sur tous les brevets etrangers , ( le moteur de l avion mustang est un merlin de roll royce ou le v8 sur une voiture c est une dion bouton en 1909 ) , revenont a notre gaston avec sa peugeot equipé en en 1935 , il sait presenté a tout les constructeurs americain pour son brevet , il lui proposer 2 dollars par boites fabriquées , il aurais du finir millionnaire en fin de sa vie , car il fini dans la misere car il a refusé , il voulais lui mene contruire son usine et dans les années 50 il a perdu son procé contre les contructeurs americains car un pot de terre contre un pot de fer c est toujours le pot de fer qui gagne et en plus elle est fragile la boite GM a 3 rapports ( la meme sur jaguar v12 )pour une conduite sport car elle aime pas les tours a 6000 trm fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaston_Fleischel

My favorite Ferrari. I’ve always loved the 4-seat models. Was the bronze example recently acquired? I remember seeing one come across the block at one of the auction houses lately.

I love the stealth Ferraris. I had a debadged 456 when I was younger. It was perfect. But I have always liked the angular design of the 400s.

I enjoyed the "compare and contrast" of these elegant Grand Touring cars. It is an elegant design but Pininfarina recycled it from the 1970 Fiat 130 Coupe! That car was built from 1970 until 1977 and still is a styling standout.

My all time favorite Ferrari (actually the 412I with manual transmission). Hard to beat power windows, steering, brakes and an A/C that actually cools the cars interior. Personal luxury coupe in 1980's attire to the hilt. The Mercedes SLC's of the same period were far better cars from a comfort and usability standpoint but the 400's and 412's were James Bond cool. Another excellent review Donald.

I have seen your video with great delay,but I have liked it very much,also because I am a lucky owner of a 400 i gt,with the 5 speed manual. They are really great cars,and if you do the proper manteinance they are also extremely reliable. I think a full, rounded, accurate understanding of Ferraris doesn't come at first to many folks; it's just too easy to view Ferraris as flashy, super fast stuff meant only for rich, flashy people. That's too simplistic. These models in the video are awesome and I'd gladly have one if I could afford it.

Great video. I've have a 1984 400iA (for 18 years) and I agree with all that was said. It's an awesome long haul car. Quiet, comfortable and fast. It's interesting to note that 75% of them were automatics in the years that they were offered. I've been parked next to an '84 512 Berlinetta Boxer and there are lots of styling queues that are similar on both cars.

Thank you once again, Donald. I've never heard of, nor have I seen the Ferrari 400 series cars. Had they been imported to the USA I know they would have met my must-drive or must-have lists in the '80s. Perhaps those that dislike Ferrari having built this type of car might understand were they to think of a nice Oldsmobile coupe manufactured without regard to a price point. Something I'd like clarification of is Donald having stated "Turbo-Hydramatic." Would this be the GM line of transmissions? Or a generic term for the type? Since Rolls-Royce did indeed use GM Turbo-Hydramatic transmissions, I can completely understand Ferrari having done the same, and most particularly the Turbo 400 version.

Wonderful video. These cars are Grand Routiers made by a very special sports car manufacturer and of course they are real Ferraris. I would prefer the automatic version and I think this bronze/tan color combination is very nice (gun metal grey/black is my first choice). BTW: Recently a 400i was in front of me on the road and I was surprised how compact it was, compared to contemporary cars.

Since it uses a GM TH400 automatic I have always wondered if you could add a Gear Vendors overdrive unit on the back like the rest. I think that along with a lower gear ratio in rear differential would inject a bit of modern day performance and usefulness.

Pre-predecessor of the 365 GT 2+2 from 1968 was The 250 GTE from 1960 produced until 1963 followed by the 330 Gt 2-2

These kind of cars on automatics made sense in the past when the speed limits were less strict and the divide between crapbox and sports was huge, you’d be able to floor these cars casually. Now speed limits are strict and economy cars easily hit it, so the only time you make use of high performance is in a track where you’d probably want a manual, aside from the 200 people who drive the autobahn every week.

I love these cars I am a Ferrarista even though I don’t own one. I love them and know them well. I grew up with a 250 GT Boano 275 GTBs and finally at 3:08 GT.

Donald, I just came across your review here. I previously owned a 1983 Toyota Celica, both the '82 & '83 Celica's had rectangular tilt up headlights (928 Porsche) then for the 1984 model Toyota went to the more conventional pop up style of headlight. Long story short - I now see where the Toyota designers got the inspiration for the front end of the 1983 Toyota Celica, it is very similar in appearance to the 400i featured in the review IMO. It's funny how over the years everything is copied and recycled style wise, you just need to know where to look for the clues.

In the USA, Chrysler released the first car that you didn't have to shift, in 1939. It was basically an automated manual transmission and called Fluid-Drive. They were indestructible. I have a 1948 Chrysler with Fluid-Drive and it still operates perfectly and has never been opened up or repaired in any way. General Motors released the first automatic transmission as we know it, in 1940 in the Oldsmobile line. The first-year cars with that transmission were troublesome and often required a full rebuild in less than twenty-thousand miles. However, it's been stated that GM had all the bugs worked out for the 1941 model year.

The 400i got a facelift in 1982, 1983. The cavalino horse was gone in the grill, the interior got redesigned, and the rear panel was in body color. Also the rear bumper got twin fog lights added.

Not a bad presentation but he needs to get his facts right. The late 60s car was simply the 365 GT nick named the Queen Mary because of its overall size. The first of the new shape was styled 365 GT4 2+2 the 4 standing for 4 camshafts.I have owned one for 37 years.

If you buy one of these, you WILL find out that neither the engine nor the automatic are the problem. At their age, and in the real world they just have a very unreliable electrical system !!!

Stick shift if you live in flat place anywhere with hills you want automatic.
