Does RU-vid need another axe restoration video? Hell no... but I did one anyway. This an ancient hatchet head found in a shed several years ago and has been on my to-do list for a while.
I put it out on Instagram and Barry Whelan from One Nine Four Designs told me that this is Kent Pattern axe, or hatchet that would have been used for hewing wood. According to a swift bit of googling in New England this would probably be called a Ship Builders Axe.
The handle (haft?) is made from a lamination of white oak and sapele. I know that's going to drive the axe nerds mad, but hey... I live in a flat in an urban area. I really have no need for a functioning hewing hatchet... it's a nice thing to own, and I learned a lot in the making of it. This was the first time I'd used an angle grinder as well... a lot of firsts in this video.

Nice work Phil. "Does RU-vid need another axe restoration video? No. Is it going to get one? Oh yes!" Love it!

+Andy Pugh yeah, RU-vid really doesn't need another, but I'll add mine to the pile.

Filing the axe blade without a guard for your hands? You're living on the edge. :)

Thank you Sir... if you enjoy watching then it's job done. I like making them... so everyone's winning. I'll run out of Doctor Turtle's music one day. I'll have to ask him to make some more.

Nicely done Phil, I do love a wedge! What's the reason for sprinkling sawdust on the glue before placing the other board on top? - Clint

Thanks for watching! I saw that tip on another channel - I forget which one, maybe woodbrew? - where you put a little bit of sawdust between large face glue-ups to give a little bit of grip, so things don't move about too much while you get the clamps on.

Phil Makes Things Oh right, I've never really thought of that! They are very slippery on glue ups!
