On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share an easy way to stop grow bags from drying out in summer. I love growing in grow bags, but fabric grow bags have a downside: they dry out too quickly in hot weather. This simple method I created will show you how to stop grow bags from drying out so you'll need to water your summer garden less in the heat.

Love the use of tarp under the grow bags. Similar idea to the kiddie pool, but would hold up better... and super flexible for design options. I really have learned so many cool tips and tricks from you. Your content is valuable and unique. My next garden will have a big shade cloth, totally because of you. Thanks again!

The kiddie pool idea is a flop, unfortunately, because they wear out in 1-2 years. The sun eats them alive. My collapsible kiddie pool I bought years ago is now a vessel for mixing large amounts of potting mix, because it long ago lost the ability to hold water 😆 The tarp will last for 5-10 years with proper care, and you can weave a clothesline between the grommets and lift it up to form a boat if you want it to hold water. I try really hard to find the reason why my plants are suffering instead of constantly treating the symptoms with chemicals and sprays. I find if you can better mimic a plant's native conditions, you can avoid a lot of the problems. Almost all our problems are from growing non-native species in non-native conditions.

Thank you! Shade cloth is the #1 greatest investment I've ever made to my garden. Nothing has made a bigger difference in the health of my plants. If I could tell anyone two things to be a better gardener, it would be to install drip irrigation to your beds and install shade cloth overhead. If you can automate watering and take harsh sun out of the equation, everything gets easy.

It's been out of necessity. My climate is absolutely miserable June thru September, and my entire garden was being wiped out by 4th of July. All these progressive changes have made things so much better that everything is now thriving for the most part. It's been like putting together a 10,000 piece puzzle 😄

I’m definitely getting the tarp for my 100 gallon grow bags. For my 1 gal grow bags for my herbs in my porch I use a potting soil plastic bag turned inside out.

Whoop, look out….theres an Engineer in the garden! Yet another simple and clever idea! 👍🏻 I believe I’ve made my soil mixture a bit too loose this season and the moisture is not holding well. Love your methods of finding solutions. I bought all 25 gal grow bags this year….bigger is better.

Can you add more mulch on top? It may be able to compensate. We never know what kind of summer we are going to have. 2019, we had a hot and surprisingly dry summer. 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 were all deluges. This year, we can't get a drop of rain again and every lawn is toast. I try to plan for the average and then compensate with tricks like this.

The tarp idea is great. I am only using 4 ten gallon bags this year. I put them in a kiddie pool and drilled holes about an inch above the ground. I have corn growing in the bags. They are doing great. For health reasons I had to down size my garden.

Be careful with the kiddie pool. Believe it or not, we got one of those and it disintegrated in a season, but it was one of those cheapie $20 specials. It couldn't handle the UV and it completely fell apart, but maybe higher priced pools would hold up better. What's cool about the tarps are they are grommeted. I bought a clothesline to weave in and out of the grommets, so you can pull it up and use it like a pool to hold all the moisture in. These tarps will last many years since they're actually made to handle the UV.

My climate is always a hard battle. I've had to find a lot of ways over the years to deal with all the problems. 4-5 years ago, my garden was mostly dead by now. It's taken a long time to figure all this stuff out 😅

I just put upside down beer bottles in all my containers, at the start of garden season this year, via terracotta watering spikes. I haven’t talked about it or recommend it to anyone yet because I wanted to really see if it helped. It does. I can now say I’ll use this technique from now on. Cheaper than an Oya. I started with ten and now have 30😂

My grow bags are in kiddy pools right now. The collapsible pools available on Amazon have drain valves onto which you can attach a drain hose. They work really well!

We have one of those. The sun bleached it and ate it in a single season. Now, I just use it to mix potting mix, because it's full of holes. If you saw my most recent video on filling raised beds on my main channel, that's what I'm mixing my soil in. They don't hold up and won't last more than a year or two. They're very cheap and the sun turns them into paper. These tarps will last many seasons since they're quality and UV resistant, and what's cool about the tarps are they are grommeted. I bought a clothesline to weave in and out of the grommets, so you can pull it up and use it like a pool to hold all the moisture in. Then, if you get too much rain, you can just untie it, drain it and re-tie.

Great idea with the tarp for the grow bags. I was thinking of trying a shower curtain under my bags, but I think the tarp might be more effective. Thanks for sharing!

I think the shower curtain would get obliterated by the UV. The grommets in the tarp also allow you to run a clothesline through if you want to button up the system. The good thing about these tarps is they will last many seasons. They're not terribly expensive considering how many years you'll get out of them.

I have used a similar method going on 3 years. I bought 10 kiddie pools at Walmart that were marked down incorrectly to $2 each. I put 5-6 10 gallon grow bags in them and fill the pools with 2-3 inches of water. It has worked wonderfully and my plants have grown much better. I have not tried the shade cloth yet as my pools are not close together.

The problem with those pools is the sun obliterates them within 1-2 years, and they fall apart. I have a collapsible pool, which disintegrated in a summer and I use it now to mix potting soil. I needed to find a solution that would last. These tarps are good because they're grommeted. I bought a 100ft nylon clothesline for $9, and if need be, I will weave the clothesline through the grommets, which will allow the entire tarp to turn into a "boat" and hold all the water in. These tarps will hold up for a long time.

So many people have asked, so I tried to uncover the mystery. It has worked out very well for me. I fertigated all my containers yesterday, and a lot of excess leaked out, but it is all getting re-absorbed into my containers instead of being lost to the ground.

I set my grow bags into clear 13 gallon kitchen garbage bag with a small hole in the side for some drainage. This seems to have helped retain some of that moisture.

I want to grow napier grass for cows but because of rain it becomes poisonous. After eating that cows usually dies. That's why a rain protecting system is needed

On the subject of shade cloth how does it hold up in the wind? Where I live we get extreme wind and we get it often. It has taken up people's carports and it has taken up their sheds. Some places we even get those dust devils

Mostly fine if you secure every grommet like I do. Because it is mesh, it allows *some* of the wind through, so winds up to 30-35mph aren't an issue. I'm in an extremely storm-prone area, and I only take it down when we're going to get hit by a tropical storm or hurricane, which happens every year, usually several times at least by a glancing blow. The good news is that usually doesn't happen until September, so if I take it down in September...well, the sun has usually weakened enough by then, so it can stay off for the season. Southeast? What state and zone? I’m concerned about shade cloth due to high temps and high humidity. I heard shade cloth can make it worse. Anyone know? Temps in ok and Texas are often greater than 100 with very high humidity. Tia

Brunswick County, NC. Maximum humidity. No, that is absolutely false. Shade cloth is, by far, the best addition I have ever made to my summer garden. All my tomatoes would be dead by now without it. Will the standing water in the white tarp cause a mosquito problem?

No, because it's so unbearably hot here, the bags re-absorb the water in a matter of hours. Water needs to stand for days on end for mosquitoes to breed. A puddle sitting for a few hours won't have any consequence. If you have puddles standing for days on end, you're dramatically overwatering. If you are stuck in a daily rain pattern, this is why I recommend installing the tarp on a slight grade with the back undone so excess water washes away. Mosquitoes can't breed in water that's constantly being flushed away.

I am a Professional Grower one of the best in the world by far. We Do NOT use "grow bags" unless our rainfall or irrigation is absurdly high because they dry out too fast from the sides to maintain anything remotely close to optimal hydration of substrate. they were a gimmick sold to amateur cultivators based on the concept of "side pruning" and "aeration." Both true, But both are not essential (root aeration is, side aeration is not essential and we obviously aerate out roots with substrate composition and irrigation movement) whereas the water lost to evaporation constantly from the porous sides IS essential. No grow bags. Throw them away and Start over....

We use grow bags because a 10-pack of 20 gallon bags is the same price as a single 15 gallon nursery container. Containers are for fruit trees. For annuals, grow bags are much better. Commercial growing and backyard growing are not the same thing. If you're a professional grower, you should know that. There is *very little crossover* between backyard gardens and commercial growing conditions.

Not everyone is able to dig up their yard due to renting. There are also people who live in apartments and this is a great option to sit on their balcony. It’s not the best but it’s still an option.

I do what works. When it wasn't, everything would be dead by July. Thanks to the wonders of plastic and fabric, everything lives and thrives. It's like humanity in general. Remember when cars were made of metal and almost every car accident was a death sentence? Thanks to composite materials, most people literally walk away from accidents. Without plastic and fabric, we wouldn't have things like indoor plumbing, because it would be completely unaffordable to mine enough metal and install all that metal in every house. I'll never get the hate on plastic. Without it, we'd be back in the stone age.
