Job postings appear to be around every corner in Spokane but employers in the city's hospitality industry say it has been difficult to fill their openings. Davenport Hotels is just one company that's searching for dozens of employees.
It's the same here in Los Angeles. They want a degree, couple years experience, start you at $15 -$18 an hour, little to no benefits, and after taxes its about $13- $16 an hour and thats crap pay here in California.
It would have been nice to see this report factor in work sectors other than the food and service industry, because Spokane does indeed have a problem. I turned down a position with a major insurer there because I didn't want to fork over 60% of my take-home for a 600sq foot, 1 bedroom apartment, on top of the $75 week to park my car anywhere near the office. Let's not forget the 9% sales tax...higher than NYC!
They are paying a starting wage for an uneducated, no experience having, low end job. My first job was offloading big rigs for Kmart, tough work, for a whopping $4.25 an hour. This was in 1996, an inflation calculator will show you this is the equivalent of $7.36 per hour in 2021 dollars. So go off load semis for 8 hours a day for $7.36 an hour and then you can complain.
Why would you go back to a job that doesn't give you enough for a place to leave plus you have to deal with abuse from shitty customers. People have had enough. Pay people a living wage or go out of business. Speaking of which I'm about to leave good luck
my rent was $500 a month for a 2 bed apartment back in 2005 now they charge $2100 on the same building but people are earning the same money a week they did pre recession of 2008/09 thats Denver for you thats evrey other city today
At $15/hr, you would still need a second job or a side gig. You can't pay market rent or afford a mortgage making $15/hr. If you are single you in trouble.
very true bc full time at that rate is around $2,000 a month! Imagine all these people that have rent at $1000-1500 for a single room (higher side of rent). Then about $20 a day groceries ($600 a month)??? Holy duck it’s so bad
Basic economics. Amount of revenue could determine how much people could get pay and how much benefits they could get. If the business does not make money they cannot pay.
Also basic debts problem. If you owe money and don't get paid your debt will continue to increase to the point where even getting a decent paying job won't be able to pay off your increasing debt.
@@freedom4all108 …that don’t mean nothing..just bs they came up with to further do as they please…GREED…I believe if you work…WHEREVER…you should you should be paid a livable wage and not have to have more than 1 job to survive…white collar or blue collar jobs……ppl should be paid…they sacrifice too
Even $15/hr is a joke in some cities. Offer me $15/hr and I'll flick you off and laugh in your face. $15/hr is $600/wk, $2400/month for 40 hour weeks BEFORE taxes. Here in Charlotte, rent in a decent area 2bd/2ba is $1200-$1600/mo. They will still have food cost, transportation cost, healthcare coverage (if they are lucky), costs of kids (if they have to pay for daycare, just forget about), monthly necessities, utilities and etc. Therefore, $2100 net a month, minus $1500 a month in rent = KISS MY A**! I'm not living in unsafe areas just so your business can remain up and running. Lower the CEOs salaries or stop complaining about a lack of workers! 🤷🏾♀️
How many "incentives" do you think that smug hotel manager gets? Maybe if his company offered the same benefit package he gets to all the employees, they would have less trouble hiring. Not the same salary, just the same benefits.
Benefits often cost businesses more than a pay raise. Heck give them the benefits and a modest pay raise. You won't mind paying $150 a night for a low end motel, right?
@@420danmaynard Paying more for something I don't really need (like a hotel room) would simply make me ask if it is a necessary expense. Or I would check options like Airbnb. It doesn't seem that hard to me. Especially if that small amount of inconvenience results in many others getting a better life.

Food, Fuel and other daily necessities have become more expensive over the last year, due to inflation. People can see that the wages, these employers are offering, are not adequate for the post-pandemic world.
What do you think they should be paying employees I worked for a major hardware store 20 years last quitting my full-time job 2 years ago started out $9 an hour left at $13.80 an hour I am single and my kids are raised I managed to buy and pay off my mortgage and purchase two cars one new then one used making car payments build a small 401k and Roth IRA and I have a year-and-a-half liquid savings was that the best wages no was it the worst no. Back in the day the definition of minimum wage was something that was needed to get a basic home . Now barely makes a student wage while working to get text books . Do you get full medical if you get ill while at work . The term thank you all essential workers seems empty at times 🤷♂️
Because the entire service industry views all employees as equipment not people. You are simply to be used until broken, then replaced. So like any other piece of equipment that will need replacement, some bean counter decided the best route is to keep costs low.
A staff on the edge of poverty is easier to control. When you get paid so little you can't both build savings and eat, you are more willing to pick up a shift or perform a task outside your job description. That is viewed as beneficial by some individuals who don't see their employees as actual people.
I guess if no one goes on vacation and rent a luxury hotel room the hotel stills has to pay utility bills bills and maintenance fees, business and property taxes etc. So much for people demanding $15 an hour and now could get it but it doesn't matter since no matter how much wages will increase for low skills jobs it will never be enough since people don't understand the economic and rather be in welfare debt. Yes, you have bills to pay the businesses has bills to pay. Not doing anything but wait until your increasing debt goes up beyond your control and even if you get paid $100 an hr you still can't pay your debt since time is money and people rather waste time. Even airline make ends met than make nothing at all and goes in increasing debt.

Employers say it's so hard to find good employees ect ect. If an average employee earns your buisness 30 dollars an hour maybe you shouldn't try to pay them minimum wage. Maybe if an employee earns 100k a year for the company they shouldn't be expected to survive on less than 25 thousand a year? They can't hire people because they aren't willing to pay good workers a livable wage. If employers weren't forced to pay atleast minimum wage they would all be paying as close to nothing as possible while still charging the same amount for their product. 99% of buisnesses don't deserve the investment from the community to keep operating. Haven't worked for the same company for 5 years before covid for an average of 60 hours a week showed me just how much work the hourly workers do compared to the salary workers sitting on their asses. Bonuses go to managers but those bonuses wouldn't have been hit if it wasn't for everyone else down the chain. Maybe instead of doubling the pay for managers that have good enough employees to hit their numbers, you should give incentives to those employees who hit those numbers for your managers.
People are also rethinking their career choices.Delivery jobs like Amazon Fedex etc. Are booming. Why go back to hospitality jobs where your manager is an ass
And people are walking off Amazon delivery jobs, even abandoning the vehicle and packages in certain circumstances. I guess those jobs don't pay enough either.
Man nobody wants to serve other people and put up with customers bs. These are bs jobs. Go work for yourself. Let the robots have the back breaking 9-5 bs. That way of life is over and I'm happy for it.
Remember, people use to constantly say if they don’t pay enough then leave…and people did😂🤷♀️. People are finally not accepting these jobs they’ll barely make it on.
People are tired of getting taken advantage of. My advice to these employers and owners, hire your family members and pay them minimum wage. Even your own family will leave you😂😂😂
People are sitting at home collecting. They don't want to work hard or improve their lives in order to earn a higher wage. They like to complain about businesses not paying enough but don't want to look at their own lives and take responsibility to make it better.

Yes I have worked a job where you had to wear a face mask and goggles all day long plus other safety items for years. Yes, some of the workers complained, some of the workers refused to use the saftey gear and were fired. They were the lucky ones. Others were not that lucky, they died because they wanted the pay check but not have to wear the safety equipmet. Leaving their family without a husband and father. I remember one guy that bragged that he had taken out $500,000 life insurance and if anything happened to him his family would be taken care of. He got killed on the job because he refused to wear the safety gear all the time, if no boss was around he would not wear it. Another worker married his widower within 4 months. He bought a new pickup truck, boat, motor home and BMW with the life insurance money. They took cruises, family vacations to all types of theme parks. He quit his job and they moved, spent the $500,000 in less 2 years. 4 yeas later the wife and 3 kids moved back home into her mothers place. She was broke and he had devoiced her. His kids got SS, free breakfast and lunch at school, she got a job working as a school crossing gaurd and worked at a restaurant the afternoon shift, all because he did not think he should wear the protective gear. HE WAS PROVEN DEAD WRONG. Yes my brother-in-law spent 6 weeks in the hospital with Covid-19 , on the 7 week he was released from the hospital, they took him strait to the funual home and after a couple od days he was planted in the ground. He said that wearing a mask made his glasses fog up, he solved that problem.

Delivery drivers for food has always been a scam. Driving their own car is much more expensive than drivers realize. They only consider how much money they make an hour and fuel. The businesses are getting to rent the driver's car for free.
@@MIKEO96 Even worse. The depreciation rate that car goes through increases with every delivery. They work for 5 years to pay off the car and are left with something almost worthless compared to the original investment. Plus maintaining and servicing the vehicle costs even more money. Here's something that is not being talked about at all with regard to COVID-19 and returning to hospitality jobs. Employers in the hospitality/service sectors did a LOT of lobbying to have their liability limited during relief effort debates. A lot of those wish lists were crammed firmly in just to get into committee. In the meantime, many people had to work, with laughable mitigation efforts by their employers.
