Americans are leaving their jobs in droves. In August 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs. While some people have left the workforce entirely, job security and better pay are top concerns for others. Dubbed "The Great Resignation", the exodus of workers has created hiring challenges for companies and left millions of jobs unfilled. More than half of U.S. workers surveyed said they plan to look for a new job in the coming year, according to Bankrate's August jobseeker survey. Some 56% of respondents said adjustable working hours and remote work were a priority. Working women have faced an additional burden, juggling childcare duties, virtual schooling and their careers. So, what does the realignment of the workforce mean for employees and businesses? And what steps should you take before quitting your job?

Over the past 10 years, I've worked in IT, taught Computer Science, and worked in robotics/automation. Every single one of these jobs tried to make me work outside the hours that were predefined and then made me out to NOT be a "team player" because I challenged them. Part of the problem is coworkers not having the backbone to stand up for themselves. Quit being passive!
@j-watty3818
@j-watty3818 2 года назад
@LogicalSchizoid_INTP It's far from a random event. It's a domino effect of the businesses obtaining more power; work outside the predefined hours, be in constant touch through the use of the cell phone you pay for, take this medication, take this pay cut, no raises this year, etc. The rights and treatments of workers have dwindled over the past 50 years to the point everyone is quitting. The employers have gained more power while the employees have lost their power, both sides are at fault. Our powers as employees have gotten worse because the majority just roll over and do whatever their employer tells them to without challenging. Quit being passive!

@@j-watty3818 I agree with you, I've never been afraid of standing up to Managers on a power trip I don't fear them and have even told them to their face to kiss my ass. NOW I a have a car and my last days in the job are getting nearer and nearer. I got laid off in late January but found my passion last summer, skin care. I think I’m too old to go to medical school in order to become a Dermatologist so I decided to go to Esthetician school instead. Getting laid off was the BEST thing that ever happened. I hated my manager, she had horrible leadership skills and just refused to let me flourish and grow. In turn I was able to go to school full time which only took 5 months to complete and am now a licensed esthetician in NY. I recently got a job and it was a MUST that it be remote because now I have a space where I’ll be conducting my services and my goal is to work from there. I’m using is job to fund my passion and now the job isn’t using me. Fulfilled is an understatement ☀️

I think employers are finally getting what they deserve. Serves them right after treating employees and/or prospective ones so badly. To employers: If the employee is qualified or has done the exact same work, please at least offer them the courtesy of an interview. If not, don't be surprised when down the line you're "ghosted." And quit paying poor wages and not granting any benefits or pay raises. In short, be decent. Oh, and one other thing. Quit offering me less benefits than others. I worked at a job where as a member of the lowest of the low I got one week of paid leave for not only vacation (after one year) but also sick leave. ONE week. Everyone else employed there got a month. I thought this was unfair and unequal treatment. Those people were not being paid at piece rate like I was, either but at an hourly rate or salaried and were being paid consistently. If I ran out of work which was often I did not get paid. The year I did not even make $10.00 an hour at their piece rate money was when I quit. I think they went out of business within the next 2 years. So everyone else at my level must have wised up too as to being exploited. Screw them.

For too long, the overall mentality here in the US was "be happy and thankful you got a job", which gave all the power to the employers, it enabled employers to pay people less and demand more and treat you as if they were doing you a favor by employing you, it created toxic work environments, it promoted literal abusive behaviour, so I am glad that this is happening now, it's a sobering reminder to companies that they need the employees as much as the employees need them, I hope that after this pandemic passes, things don't go back to how they were before, I hope people will remember that time is precious and no amount of money can buy even one second of it.

It doesn't matter what job you do you or how high up the ladder you get you are always replaceable. Find a job that offers you the benefits you want but you sure as hell won't be finding those with entry level unskilled jobs. I think one problem with getting a job in the first place is Resumes and experience. I get that Employers want experienced workers, but this is a double edge sword since that might scare off potential workers due to lack of experience. Wouldn't it be better to train people to do the job you want them to do? For jobs like the medical field and police work, it makes total sense since jobs like that takes years of training to get done. But when it comes to office work or anything involving typing in a computer, it should be easier to train them, "learning by doing" to be exact

I worked through the pandemic, worked overtime do to lack of employees. The last straw was when a new higher got a $5000 signing bonus but those of who had been there for years didn't. Basically what happened was this, the new person got the bonus of being the ONLY employee, all 11 of us quit without notice on the spot. Now the owner can hand out another $75k to staff the place, it takes 16 people to run that place smoothly. The next day they tried to compromise by giving us $1000 to come back, let's just say I don't think they will be reopening any time soon, that was 2 weeks ago. On the other hand almost all of us got jobs not far away and quickly. I will receive a $6k bonus in February, that's the same bonus my new employer gave to all who stayed throughout the lockdown.

@ICA: Of course they could have. Any company ‘can’ pay their employees what they want. Of course that increases the cost of production which will increase the cost of goods. We are only just beginning to see this happen. So, sure, everyone can raise wages and then the price of goods sold. We will all be making more money but will be paying more to live so the wage increase is for not. Worst yet if the increase puts you in a higher tax bracket then you will essentially be making less. This is why companies have not increased prior is because they did not want to increase the cost of their product. Now if forced to do so they will but it doesn’t change the quality of life for anyone. Those on a fixed income will be the ones really hurt.

It took a pandemic for people to sit down and evaluate their jobs, lives and whats more important for them. And that is crayze, shows how overworked most people were. No time to even think.

You are so right!! The pandemic has disrupted society so much that everyone is not only reassessing their employment, they're reassessing many aspects of their lives. It's easy to see that Corporations are trying to make it go back to the status quo situation of the past but it's not working. We have the power and I hope society doesn't give in until it changes in our favor. It's the first time we have a slight amount of power, I ain't giving it up easily

Maybe they can't meet their need, imagine working for 40yrs to have $1m in your retirement, while some people are putting just $10k in a meme coin for just few months and become multi millionaires. if you don't invest, you're missing out on opportunities to increase your financial status

Imagine being so oblivious that you say "nobody wants to work" when noone shows up to apply for your construction work because you're offering a few dollars above minimum wage in exchange for knuckle busting physical labor with poor work/life balance due to most projects requiring overtime.
